Gentile Martin Schulz,
Dear Martin Schulz,
nella sua recente visita nel nostro Paese ha fatto delle affermazioni su di me e sul MoVimento 5 Stelle che dette da lei, nella sua qualità di presidente del Parlamento europeo, sono molto gravi.
In your recent visit to our country you made certain statements about myself and the MoVimento 5 Stelle {5 Star MoVement} and because they have come from yourself in your role as President of the European Parliament, these are particularly serious.

“Quando i politici vanno a vedere una commedia penso sia meno pericoloso di quando i comici diventano politici.
“When the politicians go to see a comedy I think it is less dangerous than when comedians become politicians.
Grillo è un classico fenomeno di protesta che non mi pare né molto democratico, né molto trasparente.
Grillo is a classic protest phenomenon and he seems to be not very democratic, and not very transparent.
Non ha uno statuto per il suo movimento.
He has no statute for his Movement.
Non si sa come lavora.
It’s not known how he functions.
Lo fa anonimamente e su internet.
He operates anonymously and on the Internet.
Non è disposto a discutere e non rappresenta una cultura democratica tradizionale.
He is not willing to have discussions and he does not represent a traditional democratic culture.
Dire sempre no a tutto senza dire a favore di cosa si è non è un’opzione.
To always say “no” to everything without ever being in favour of things is not an option.
E dire usciamo dall’euro e torniamo alla lira io penso che sia pura ciarlataneria”.
And to say “let’s leave the euro and go back to the lira” is in my opinion pure charlatanism.”.

I believe that you do not have all the information or that you have been badly informed.

Ha raccolto 350.000 firme per una legge di iniziativa popolare per non consentire ai pregiudicati di entrare in Parlamento e per l’elezione diretta del candidato, legge mai discussa dal Senato in 5 anni.
It collected 350,000 signatures for a popular initiative law saying that it is not OK for people with previous criminal convictions to enter Parliament and calling for the direct of election of candidates.This is a proposed law that has never been discussed in the Senate in 5 years.
Ha raccolto le firme per tre referendum sulla libertà di stampa, uno per l’abolizione della legge Gasparri che favoriva le emittenti di Berlusconi, osteggiato da tutti i partiti tranne l’Italia dei Valori.
The M5S has collected signatures for three referenda regarding the freedom of the press, one of which was for the abolition of the Gasparri law that favoured the channels of Berlusconi, and it has been shunned by all the parties apart from Italia dei Valori.
Ha partecipato a elezioni comunali e regionali senza alcun contributo pubblico facendo eleggere circa 400 consiglieri e quattro sindaci. Il MoVimento 5 Stelle è per la trasparenza assoluta di ogni atto pubblico.
The M5S has participated in local and regional elections without any public financing and it has seen the election of about 400 councillors and four mayors. The 5 Star MoVement stands for absolute transparency for any public instrument.
Il MoVimento 5 Stelle non lavora anonimamente, ma pubblicamente e, questo è vero, usa Internet come media essendo tutti gli altri, televisioni e giornali, occupati da lobby o da partiti.
The 5 Star MoVement does not operate anonymously but publicly and this is true, it uses the Internet as the media because all the others, the TV channels, and the newspapers, are occupied by lobbies and parties.
Le posso assicurare che io e i ragazzi del Movimento 5 Stelle siamo sempre disposti a discutere.
I can assure you that I and the young people of the 5 Star MoVement are always willing to have discussions.
Lo facciamo nelle piazze, nelle strade, nei banchetti, oltre che sulla Rete.
We do this in the squares, in the streets, at festivals, as well as on the Internet.
La scorsa primavera, nel periodo pre elettorale, ho parlato in decine e decine di piazze italiane a migliaia di persone e discusso direttamente con centinaia di cittadini.
In the Spring, during the election campaign, I spoke in dozens and dozens of Italian squares to thousands of people and I had direct discussions with hundreds of citizens.
Senza alcuna scorta e a mie spese.
Without bodyguards and at my own expense.
Il MoVimento 5 Stelle si confronta con i cittadini, a loro risponde, è composto da cittadini.
The 5 Star MoVement engages with the citizen. It responds to them. It is made up of citizens.
In quanto all’euro, non ho detto che bisogna uscirne, non voglio arrogarmi una decisione così importante, ho proposto invece che siano gli italiani attraverso un referendum a decidere.
As regards the euro, I didn’t say that we must leave the euro. I don’t want to take such an important decision. However, I have proposed that the Italians should be able to make this decision by means of a referendum.
Non è democrazia?

Lei ci accusa di non avere “una cultura democratica tradizionale” e, devo confessare che non riesco a capirne il senso.
You accuse us of not having “a traditional democratic culture” and, I have to confess that I do not understand your meaning.
