Sono Claudia Buccellati, e sono Presidente dell’Associazione Per il Policlinico Onlus, Associazione che è legata al nostro Ospedale più importante, che dalla metà del ‘400 si occupa dei milanesi, non a caso viene chiamato la Cà Granda, l’ospedale dei milanesi.
My name is Claudia Buccellati and I am President of the Associazione Per il Policlinico Onlus, an Association that is linked to our most important hospital that has been looking after the people of Milan since the mid 1400s and it is no coincidence that it is called Cà Granda, the hospital of the Milanese people.

Quest’anno abbiamo aderito a una iniziativa del comune di Milano, insieme al produttore di defibrillatori, che si chiama Progetto RianimaMi.
This year, in conjunction with a defibrillator manufacturer, we have been taking part in an initiative called Progetto RianimaMi..(Literally the ResuscitateMe Project), set up by the Milan Municipality.

Più del 70% dei morti per arresto cardiaco avviene non in ospedale, ma fuori, moltissimi per strada.
More than 70% of deaths from cardiac arrest occur not in hospital but outside, many of them out there on the streets.

L’arresto cardiaco colpisce tutte le fasce della popolazione.
Cardiac arrest can strike members of all population groups.

>>> Per quasi il doppio quella maschile rispetto alla femminile e la fascia percentualmente più colpita è quella che va dai 55 ai 64 anni.
The worst affected group are people between the ages of 55 and 64 years of age and includes almost twice as many men than women.

Quando si verifica un arresto cardiaco bisogna intervenire immediatamente, altrimenti non si recupera il paziente.
When a cardiac arrest occurs, we have to act immediately otherwise the patient cannot be saved.

Dopo 4 minuti non c’è più l’afflusso di ossigeno al cervello e si verificano danni permanenti.
After 4 minutes there is no longer any blood flow to the brain, which results in permanent damage.

Dopo 10 minuti la morte è certa.
After 10 minutes death is inevitable.

Quindi per arrivare immediatamente con il defibrillatore il progetto RianimaMI che cosa ha pensato?
So what has the RianimaMi Project done to ensure the speedy arrival of a defibrillator?

Dotiamo di defibrillatori portatili tutte le unità mobili dei vigili urbani, cioè le moto e le automobili, dislocate in tutta la città.
We are equipping all of the municipal police units with portable defibrillators, in other words every motorcycle and motor car deployed throughout the entire city.

Questi mezzi arrivano prima dell’ambulanza.
These vehicles normally arrive on site before the ambulance gets there.

Abbiamo un numero unico per Regione Lombardia, un numero verde che smista le chiamate di emergenza; per cui a un certo punto quando si chiama il 118 immediatamente arriva la più vicina macchina dotata di defibrillatore.
There is a single call-centre number for the entire Lombardy Region, a toll-free number that sorts and redirects emergency calls so whenever you call the 118 emergency number, the nearest available vehicle equipped with a defibrillator will arrive.

Un’ambulanza ci mette molto più tempo ad arrivare, perciò quando si verifica un arresto cardiaco per prima cosa bisogna chiamate il 118.
An ambulance takes a lot longer to get there so in the event of a cardiac arrest, the first thing to do is to call 118.

Il 118 automaticamente manda la pattuglia più vicina.
The 118 emergency call will automatically despatch the nearest patrol unit.

Qui siamo vicini a una postazione fissa di defibrillatore, che è la prima che abbiamo installato per la città di Milano: in Piazza Duomo
Here we are very close to a permanent defibrillator location, the first one that we have set up here in Milan, in Piazza Duomo.

C’è un fortissimo passaggio di stranieri, che sono abituati sia a vedere il simbolo del defibrillatore, ovvero questo cuore attraversato da una saetta, sia a usarlo, perché all’estero non è obbligatorio aver fatto un corso.
There are many passing foreigners here who are used to seeing the defibrillator sign, namely a heart crossed by a lightning bolt, and know how to use it since abroad you don’t have to have completed a special course in order to use a defibrillator.

Bisogna contribuire alla cultura del salvataggio da arresto cardiaco.
We have to contribute towards creating a cardiac arrest rescue culture.

Ricordiamoci che in Italia ogni anno muoiono 60 mila persone di arresto cardiaco, e non è poco.
Remember that every year some 60-thousand people die from cardiac arrest here in Italy, which is no small number.

Bisogna iniziare dalle scuole, a insegnare a usare il defibrillatore e a fare il massaggio cardiaco.
We must start at our schools and begin teaching people how to use a defibrillator and how to do a cardiac massage.

Due gesti che possono fare la differenza tra la vita e la morte, o tra una vita normale e una vegetativa.
These are two things that could mean the difference between life and death or between a normal or vegetative life.

Ogni anno per la giornata mondiale del cuore, come Associazione per il Policlinico, organizziamo la salita al Duomo gratuita e abbiamo la nostra equipe di specializzandi in cardiologia che rilevano i dati prima della salita e dopo i 211 gradini che ognuno può fare con la velocità che vuole.
As the “Associazione per il Policlinico”, each year on the occasion of World Heart Day we organise the “salita al Duomo gratuita”, a free climb to the top of the Duomo, where our squad of cardiology specialisation interns are on hand to take your readings before and after the 211-step climb, which you can all do at your own pace.

Comparando i valori dall’inizio alla fine uno può avere coscienza del suo stato di salute, del suo allenamento, e questi dati, poi, vengono elaborati dal Policlinico per fare una statistica sullo stato della popolazione.
By comparing the before and after readings you can judge your own state of health, your level of fitness and this data is then processed by the Polyclinic to provide statistics on the status of the population as a whole.

Ultimamente abbiamo visto, per esempio, che le donne sono molto meno allenate degli uomini, anche se muoiono meno di arresto cardiaco.
Lately we have noticed, for example, that the women are far less fit than the men, even though they are less likely to die from cardiac arrest.

Ogni anno aggiungiamo altri dati per vedere come si evolvono le situazioni.
Each year we add new data to this database in order to monitor how the situation is changing.

Quest’anno l’appuntamento sarà sabato 27 di settembre alle Guglie del Duomo, a Milano.
This year’s appointment is for Saturday 27 September at the Spires of the Duomo in Milan.

Queste sono macchine intelligenti, per cui se uno vuole usare il defibrillatore quando non ve ne è bisogno, la macchina non parte.
These are very smart machines indeed and if anyone tries to use the defibrillator when it is not necessary, the machine simply won’t start up.

Questa è una garanzia, sia per chi la usa che per il soggetto su cui viene usata.
This provides assurance both for the person using the machine and for the person on whom it is being used.

Il nostro è un progetto ambizioso, che naturalmente ha bisogno dell’aiuto di tutti.
This project of ours is a very ambitious one which requires help from everyone.

Per questo primo totem abbiamo avuto l’aiuto di una banca, ma per tutti gli altri cerchiamo delle situazioni per raccogliere fondi destinati proprio ai defibrillatori .
We received assistance from one of the banks for this first totem but we are looking for opportunities to raise money to pay for these defibrillators.

L’obiettivo è un sogno, ma i sogni aiutano a realizzare le cose vere, la realtà: tappezzare Milano, tutti i centri sportivi, tutti gli agglomerati, i supermercati, le palestre, le scuole, i cinema, le chiese, ovunque si riuniscano delle persone desideriamo mettere a disposizione dei defibrillatori.
The aim is a dream, but dreams help to achieve real things, namely to cover every corner of Milan. We want to make defibrillators available at every sports centre, every gathering place, every supermarket, every gym, every school, every cinema, every church and any other place where people get together.

Visitate il nostro sito e chissà che a qualcuno di voi non venga voglia di riprendere l’iniziativa in un’altra città e addirittura di creare una rete in tutta Italia, capace di salvare i nostri cuori, quindi chiediamo l’aiuto di tutti.
Visit our website and who knows, someone may just decide to take this initiative back with them to some other town and perhaps even create an entire network throughout Italy that could save our hearts, so we are asking everyone to help.

Salvare una vita è una cosa che può salvare anche noi stessi.
Saving a life is something that could one day very well save our life.
