L’amico devoto
‘”Caro piccolo Hans,” disse il Mugnaio, “ti dispiacerebbe portare questo sacco di farina per me al mercato?”
‘”Oh, I am so sorry,” said Hans, “but I am really very busy to-day. I have got all my creepers to nail up, and all my flowers to water, and all my grass to roll.”
‘”Oh, mi dispiace,” disse Hans, “ma sono molto occupato oggi. Devo fissare tutti i miei rampicanti, ho i fiori da annaffiare e devo stendere le zolle d’erba.”
‘”Well, really,” said the Miller, “I think that, considering that I am going to give you my wheelbarrow, it is rather unfriendly of you to refuse.”
‘”Bhe, certo,” disse il Mugnaio, “io penso che, considerato che ti darò la mia carriola, è piuttosto scortese da parte tua rifiutare.”
‘”Oh, don’t say that,” cried little Hans, “I wouldn’t be unfriendly for the whole world;” and he ran in for his cap, and trudged off with the big sack on his shoulders.
‘”Oh no, non dire così,” esclamò il piccolo Hans, “non vorrei essere scortese per niente al mondo;” corse a prendere il berretto e arrancò con il grande sacco sulle spalle.
>>> ‘It was a very hot day, and the road was terribly dusty, and before Hans had reached the sixth milestone he was so tired that he had to sit down and rest.
‘Era una giornata molto calda e la strada era tremendamente polverosa e prima che Hans ebbe raggiunto il sesto miglio, era così stanco che si dovette sedere per riposare.
However, he went on bravely, and at last he reached the market.
Comunque proseguì coraggiosamente e alla fine raggiunse il mercato.
After he had waited there some time, he sold the sack of flour for a very good price, and then he returned home at once, for he was afraid that if he stopped too late he might meet some robbers on the way.
Dopo che ebbe aspettato lì per un po’, vendette il sacco di farina ad un prezzo molto buono e poi tornò subito a casa perchè temeva che se si fosse fermato troppo a lungo avrebbe potuto incontrare dei rapinatori per strada.
‘”It has certainly been a hard day,” said little Hans to himself as he was going to bed, “but I am glad I did not refuse the Miller, for he is my best friend, and, besides, he is going to give me his wheelbarrow.”
‘”Senza dubbio è stata una dura giornata,” disse il piccolo Hans tra sé e sé mentre andava a letto, “ma sono contento di non aver detto di no al Mugnaio, perché è il mio miglior amico e oltretutto, mi darà la sua carriola.”
‘Early the next morning the Miller came down to get the money for his sack of flour, but little Hans was so tired that he was still in bed.
‘La mattina seguente di buon ora, il Mugnaio venne a prendersi i soldi del sacco di farina, ma il piccolo Hans era così stanco che era ancora a letto.
‘”Upon my word,” said the Miller, “you are very lazy. Really, considering that I am going to give you my wheelbarrow, I think you might work harder.
‘”Parola mia,” disse il Mugnaio, “sei molto pigro. Veramente, considerando che ti darò la mia carriola, penso che dovresti impegnarti di più.
Idleness is a great sin, and I certainly don’t like any of my friends to be idle or sluggish.
L’ozio è un grande peccato originale ed io certamente non amo avere degli amici oziosi o indolenti.
You must not mind my speaking quite plainly to you.
Non devi prendertela se ti parlo francamente.
Of course I should not dream of doing so if I were not your friend.
Certamente non mi sognerei di farlo se non fossi tuo amico.
But what is the good of friendship if one cannot say exactly what one means?
Ma cos’è il bello dell’amicizia se uno non può dire esattamente ciò che pensa?
Anybody can say charming things and try to please and to flatter, but a true friend always says unpleasant things, and does riot mind giving pain.
Tutti possono dire cose per compiacere e adulare, ma un amico vero dice sempre cose spiacevoli e non teme di dare dolore.
Indeed, if he is a really true friend he prefers it, for he knows that then he is doing good.”
Anzi, se è davvero un amico sincero lo preferisce, poiché sa che allora sta facendo la cosa giusta.”
‘”I am very sorry,” said little Hans, rubbing his eyes and pulling off his night-cap, “but I was so tired that I thought I would lie in bed for a little time, and listen to the birds singing.
‘”Sono davvero spiacente,” disse il piccolo Hans, strofinandosi gli occhi e togliendosi il berretto da notte, “ma ero così stanco che ho pensato di restare più a lungo a letto ad ascoltare gli uccellini cantare.
Do you know that I always work better after hearing the birds sing?”
Sai che lavoro sempre meglio dopo che ho sentito gli uccellini cantare?”
‘”Well, I am glad of that,” said the Miller, clapping little Hans on the back, “for I want you to come up to the mill as soon as you are dressed, and mend my barn-roof for me.”
‘”Bene, mi fa piacere,” disse il Mugnaio, dandogli una pacca sulla schiena, “perché voglio che tu venga al mulino appena ti sarai vestito e ripari il tetto del granaio per me.”
‘Poor little Hans was very anxious to go and work in his garden, for his flowers had not been watered for two days, but he did not like to refuse the Miller, as he was such a good friend to him.
‘Il povero hans era molto ansioso di andare a lavorare nel suo giardino, perché i suoi fiori non erano stati annaffiati per due giorni, ma non gli piaceva dire di no al Mugnaio, poiché era un così buon amico.
‘”Do you think it would be unfriendly of me if I said I was busy?” he inquired in a shy and timid voice.
‘”Pensi che sarebbe scortese da parte mia se dicessi che sono occupato?” chiese timidamente.
‘”Well, really,” answered the Miller, “I do not think it is much to ask of you, considering that I am going to give you my wheelbarrow; but of course if you refuse I will go and do it myself.”
‘”Bhe, veramente,” rispose il Mugnaio, “non penso che sia chiedere molto, considerando che ti darò la mia carriola; ma ovviamente se rifiuti andrò a farlo io stesso.”
