An immigrant is worth more than drugs

Giovanni Falcone diceva “Segui i soldi e troverai la mafia”.
Giovanni Falcone said “Follow the money and you’ll find the mafia”.

Ogni immigrato che arriva in Italia ha diritto a 1.050 euro al mese per vivere.
Every immigrant arriving in Italy has the right to 1,050 euro a month to live on.

Di questi una quota va alla mafia.
Of this, a percentage goes to the mafia.

Dalle intercettazioni il tariffario è tra un euro e due euro al giorno.

day.

Per la mafia un immigrato è una rendita.
For the mafia, immigrants are a source of income.

Vale più della droga.
They’re worth more than drugs.

E quindi ha tutto l’interesse a farne arrivare il più possibile.

Ci sono poi gli scafisti che vengono pagati dagli immigrati, le cifre si aggirano intorno ai 1.000 euro per persona.
The boat handlers are paid by the immigrants – about a thousand euro per person.

Ma chi paga gli scafisti?
But who’s really paying the boat handlers?

L’immigrato che con quella cifra vivrebbe per anni al suo Paese?
Is it really the immigrants that ack home, would get by on that amount for years?

O qualcun altro?
Or someone else?

L’immigrato si indebita forse vita natural durante per ottenere il passaggio sul barcone?
Is the immigrant getting into a lifetime of debt to get a place on board a boat?

E in questo caso con chi?
And to whom is he indebted?

E’ irrealistico pensare che gente che “ha perso tutto”, indigente, senza neppure i soldi per un cambio d’abito possa disporre di 1.000 euro o più.
It’s not realistic to think that people who “have lost everything“, who are destitute, who don’t even have the money for a change of clothes, can easily get hold of a thousand euro or even more.

Da dove arrivano questi soldi?
Where’s this money coming from?

La risposta più ovvia è che paghi chi ci guadagna e quindi le mafie.
The most obvious response is that the ones paying out are the ones that are making money – thus the mafias.

E in questo caso il cerchio scafisti-immigrati-mafie si chiude.
And that’s how they close the circle – with the boat handlers, the mafias and the immigrants.

Certo, ci sono anche i partiti politici che creano “le emergenze” in modo da aprire centri di accoglienza su cui lucrare insieme alle mafie.
To be sure, there are also the political parties that create “the moments of crisis” so that they can open up “welcome centres” that can be used to cream off money for themselves and for the mafias.

Mafiacapitale è solo la punta dell’iceberg.
Mafiacapitale is just the tip of the iceberg.

Dove c’è immigrato, c’è odore di soldi.
Where there are immigrants, there’s the smell of money.

E’ una risorsa da mettere nel Pil con droga e prostituzione.
It’s a resource to be added to the GDP together with drugs and prostitution.

Dopo Roma ci saranno altre città, altre tangenti, altri politici.
After Rome, there’ll be other cities, other kickbacks, and other politicians.

E’ solo questione di tempo.
It’s just a matter of time.

Per risolvere il problema immigrazione va prosciugato il fiume di soldi che si porta con sé.
To resolve the imigration issue, the associated flow of money needs drying up.
