Caro Beppe: tu lo dicevi, adesso è realtà
Dear Beppe, You were saying this before – now it’s happening

Lettera aperta di Piernicola Pedicini, portavoce M5S in Parlamento Europeo, a Beppe Grillo
Open letter to Beppe Grillo from Piernicola Pedicini, M5S spokesperson in the European Parliament

“Caro Beppe,
“Dear Beppe,

Nel 1992 avevo ventitré anni.
In 1992, I was just 23 years old.

At that time, I admit, like all young men, I just thought about tennis and girls and when I was at home watching your show on RAI 1, I didn’t fully grasp the significance of your message.

Now I realise that that seemed to be a sketch to make us laugh and yet in fact it was a wonderful political message.

A further 23 years have gone by and that toothbrush that you were holding on that early evening show on RAI 1, is the one that I have symbolically taken to the European Parliament.

Ti racconto cosa è successo.
I’ll tell you what happened.

Il nostro modello di sviluppo è basato sul ciclo produzione-acquisto-utilizzo-rifiuto;
Our development model is based on the cycle of production-purchase-use-throwaway.

You use an object and then when it’s worn out or no longer useful, you throw it away.

Così non si può andare lontano;
We cannot go far like that.

We cannot go on producing stuff indefinitely because the resources of the earth are finite and above all because our planet cannot accept everything that’s thrown away.

We need a new development model. We need a model of a circular economy – in which the production cycle is a closed cycle and includes recycling and re-use.

The good news is that today, the European Parliament’s Environment Committee has approved a draft report on the effective use of resources : ideas to develop the Circular Economy.

In one of the amendments that were approved, we asked the European Commission to take action by 2030 to apply the principle of “extended producer responsibility:

that obliges the big companies to be responsible for disposing of the objects they produce.

Any company creating a product, would have to make the effort to have production processes that pollute as little as possible and above all with componenets that are re-used.

Questo è solo uno dei punti che sono stati inseriti in questo rapporto;
This is just one of the points inserted into this report.

Others include the increase in recycling so that at least 70% of solid urban waste is recycled, new regulations about public tendering processes that include obligations to be green, the elimination of incentives to use fossil fuels that Italian electricty users pay for in their utilities bills – under the item labelled CIP6.

Unfortunately, the European Commission rejected one of our amendments that imposed a total ban on burning rubbish.

Sarebbe stata una rivoluzione!
That would have been a revolution!

We presented this amendment because we no longer want to find a plastic toothbrush turning up on our dinner table in the guise of a fish that has been feeding on dioxin produced from gases coming out of an incinerator.

Non hanno avuto coraggio.
They haven’t had the courage.

The courage that we will have when we are in the majority.

In alto i cuori!
Lift up your hearts!

Ti aspettiamo a Bruxelles.”
We’re expecting to see you in Brussels.“
