The winners will come to Brussels to collect their awards for the most accurate translation of their country on 6 April 2017.

The European Commission has today announced the winners of its annual translation contest ‘Juvenes Translatores’.
La Commissione europea ha annunciato oggi i nomi dei vincitori del concorso annuale di traduzione “Juvenes Translatores”.
A total of 28 secondary school students, one from each Member State, will be invited to Brussels on 6 April to receive their trophies from Commissioner Günther Oettinger, responsible for Budget and Human Resources.
In tutto 28 studenti delle scuole secondarie superiori, uno per ciascuno Stato membro, saranno invitati a Bruxelles il 6 aprile per ricevere il premio dalle mani del Commissario responsabile per il Bilancio e le risorse umane, Günther Oettinger.

For the 10th time since 2007, over 3000 students from across the European Union translated texts, this time on the subjects of languages and translation.
Per la decima volta dal 2007 oltre 3 000 studenti provenienti da tutta l’Unione europea si sono cimentati con testi che questa volta riguardavano le lingue e la traduzione.
They could choose from any of the 552 possible combinations between any two of the EU’s 24 official languages.
I partecipanti potevano scegliere una qualsiasi delle 552 combinazioni linguistiche possibili tra due delle 24 lingue ufficiali dell’UE:
Students used 152 language combinations, including translating from Greek into Latvian, and from Bulgarian into Portuguese.

All winners chose to translate into their strongest language or mother tongue, as the official translators in EU Institutions do.

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation has been organising the Juvenes Translatores (Latin for ‘young translators’) contest every year since 2007.

Its aim is to promote language learning in schools and give young people a taste of what it is like to be a translator.

It is open to 17-year-old secondary school pupils and takes place at the same time in all selected schools across the EU.

The contest has inspired and encouraged some of the participants to pursue their languages at university level and to become professional translators.
