The saviours of the Sequoias

C’erano una volta le foreste di sequoie giganti.
Once upon a time there were forests of giant Sequoias.

Alberi millenari, alti come il cielo, che si nutrivano di fuoco.
Thousand-year-old trees, as tall as the sky, that lived on fire.

Anche quando una sequoia cadeva al suolo la sua vita continuava attraverso generazioni di uomini.
Even when one of these Sequoias eventually fell to the forest floor, it continued to live through generations of men.

Si propagava nel terreno attraverso i rami.
The trees propagated themselves across the ground via their branches.

Nella valle arrivò la civiltà, la conoscenza, l’economia dell’accumulo, gli europei.
But then civilisation reached the valley and with it came knowledge, economies of scale and the Europeans.

Gli indigeni vennero imprigionati per la violazione di leggi che non conoscevano.
The indigenous people were imprisoned for breaking laws that they knew nothing about.

I loro villaggi furono sostituiti da case di legno e strade polverose.

Gli alberi divennero legna da ardere, materiale da costruzione.
The trees became mere firewood or building material.

Furono abbattuti più alberi di quanti si potessero vendere.
They cut down more trees than what they could sell.

Le testimonianze più antiche della Terra si trasformarono in dollari.
Some of the oldest witnesses of life on Earth were turned into mere Dollars.

La nuova unità di misura dell’anima.
This became the new unit of measure for souls.

Le sequoie divennero un fenomeno da baraccone, bucate, trasformate in archi giganteschi sotto i quali transitavano le prime macchine.
The Sequoias became a freak of nature, drilled full of holes and transformed into huge arches under which the first motorcars passed through.

Qualche macchia degli immensi alberi si salvò.
A few groves of these huge trees managed to survive.

Furono istituiti i primi parchi nazionali.
The first national parks were established.

Moderni zoo in cui osservare le piante.
Modern zoos in which these trees could be observed.

Per tutelare i boschi di sequoie sopravvissuti furono combattuti i frequenti incendi causati dai fulmini.
Frequent fires caused by lightning were fought in order to save the few remaining Sequoia groves.

Ma le sequoie si diradarono, iniziarono a morire per cause sconosciute.
But the Sequoias continued to decrease in number and began to die for reasons unknown.

Si capì in seguito che la causa era la mancanza di incendi.
We later began to understand that the reason was the lack of natural fires.

Gli incendi eliminavano la flora in concorrenza con le sequoie.
These fires eliminated all the flora that competed with the Sequoias.

Gli incendi, bruciando le piante morte, arricchivano il suolo che invece si inaridì.
By burning the dead trees, the fires enriched the soil, which now instead became increasingly arid.

Le sequoie sono ignifughe e non temono il fuoco.
Sequoias are fireproof and aren’t affected by fire.

Non bruciano.
They don’t burn.

Chi appoggia le mani al tronco ne può assorbire il calore.
If you touch their trunks you can feel the heat.

Prima vennero i cercatori d’oro che tagliarono le piante per costruire città fantasma, poi i boscaioli per farci legna da vendere e infine i salvatori senza conoscenza, gli apprendisti stregoni.
First came the gold prospectors who cut down the trees in order to build ghost towns, then came the woodsmen who cut them down for saleable firewood and finally the saviours without knowledge and the apprentice wizards.

Difficile dire chi tra essi è peggiore.
It is difficult to say which of these were the worst.

Tra chi cerca il profitto, chi distrugge l’ambiente e i salvatori della Patria.
Difficult to choose between those who seek profit, those who destroy the environment and the saviours of the Homeland.

Tra chi, senza regole e in modo spudorato, persegue i suoi interessi a danno della collettività e chi le regala delle ali da Icaro per farla precipitare con i suoi interessati consigli.
To choose amongst those who, without any rules or sense of propriety, shamelessly pursues his own interests to the detriment of the community and that grant the community the wings of Icarus only to watch it crash and burn thanks to their partisan advice.

I primi sono più facili da riconoscere, non si nascondono, è nella loro natura.
The former are easier to spot because they make no attempt to hide, it’s simply part of their nature.

Gli altri, sia in buona che in cattiva fede, ma questo non si saprà mai, spesso non lo sanno neppure loro, sono per definizione i buoni della sinistra.
The others, whether they operate in good or bad faith, which is something we will never know as they often don’t know themselves, are by definition the tree-huggers of the left wing.

Desertificano la democrazia, ma in modo inconsapevole.
They turn democracy into a desert, but do so unwittingly.

Sono il bene per autocertificazione.
They are the epitome of self control.

Per far crescere le sequoie è sufficiente ascoltare la propria voce.
In order to make the Sequoias grow, you just need to listen to your inner voice.

Ognuno conta uno.
Everyone is equal.

Ogni pensiero è importante.
Every thought is equally important.

Chi ti etichetta, ti annulla.
Anyone who tries to label you is essentially annulling you.
