Beppe Grillo addresses the Telecom Shareholders Meeting

Oggi sono venuto a celebrare i funerali di Telecom Italia. Ho il lutto al braccio.
I am here today to attend the funeral of Telecom Italia. I am wearing a black armband on my arm.

La ex prima azienda tecnologica del Paese è finita.
This Country’s former top technology company is finished.

Ogni anno, da 10 anni, diventa più piccola, più marginale nel contesto internazionale.
For the past 10 years, the company has been shrinking and becoming ever more marginalized in the international context.

>>> Nel periodo 2008/2012 tra tagli effettuati e tagli futuri sono previsti altri 13.000 licenziamenti.
In the period from 2008 to 2012, between the staffing cuts already made and those still to come, the Company will have fired another 13,000 employees.

L’organico di Telecom Italia al 31.12.2009 era di 54.236 dipendenti, nel 1999 quando fu ceduta a debito da Massimo D’Alema ai capitani coraggiosi Gnutti e Colaninno e Consorte aveva quasi il doppio di dipendenti.
On 31.12.2009, Telecom Italia had 54,236 employees, while in 1999, when Massimo D’Alema handed over the company to captains courageous Gnutti, Colaninno and Consorte, the company had twice as many employees.

Telecom si sta estinguendo.
Telecom is busy dying.

Quando un’azienda esternalizza i suoi migliori informatici e ingegneri per fare efficienza non ha futuro.
When a company outsources its best IT experts and engineers in the interests of efficiency, then the company has no future.

3000 tra i migliori del Paese sono esternalizzati in una grande scatola dal nome SSC che sarà “efficientata” e poi venduta con comodo.
3000 of the Country’s best were outsourced to a great mixed bag called SSC, which was then “empowered” and then sold off at leisure.

Che futuro ha un Paese che licenzia gli ingegneri e importa mano d’opera a basso costo?
What kind of future does any country have that fires its engineers and imports low-cost labour?

Telecom deve essere venduta al più presto a Telefonica o a qualche grande gruppo internazionale prima che gli attuali azionisti ne spolpino anche le ossa.
Telecom must be sold off as soon as possible to Telefonica or to some other major international Group, before the current shareholders can suck all the meat off its bones.

Telecom è morta, ma si possono espiantare i suoi organi e salvare l’occupazione ancora rimasta.
Telecom may be dead, but at least we can still transplant its organs so as to save the few remaining jobs.

Il presidente di Telecom Galateri ha detto che:
Telecom Chairman, Galateri, said that:

“c’è il debito da ridurre, lo faremo”, ma come può pensare di farlo se continua a distribuire dividendi agli azionisti tutti gli anni, anche quest’anno.
“there is debt that has to be reduced and we will do so”, but how does he propose to do this if he continues to pay out dividends to the shareholders every year, this year included?

La casa va a fuoco e usano l’acqua rimasta per farsi una doccia.
The house is burning and these guys are using all the remaining available water to take a shower.

Negli ultimi 10 anni il debito è rimasto lo stesso, mentre gli azionisti e i manager si sono arricchiti e Telecom ha come dice elegantemente Galatieri “diminuito il suo perimetro”.
In the past ten years, the debt has remained the same while the shareholders and managers have become wealthy and Telecom has “reduced its waistline”, as Galatieri so elegantly put it.

Il perimetro dei piccoli azionisti si è invece allargato, il valore di un’azione Telecom era di circa 8 euro nel 2003 e oggi vale poco più di un euro.
Instead, the shareholders’ waistline has ballooned, while Telecom shares that were worth about 8 Euro each in 2003, are now worth little more than one Euro each.

Nel 2009 i ricavi di Telecom Italia sono stati di 27,1 miliardi di euro con un debito di 34 miliardi di euro.
In 2009, Telecom’s revenues amounted to 27.1 billion Euro and the company’s debt was 34 billion Euro.

Il debito è di 7 miliardi di euro più dei ricavi.
In other words, its debt exceeded its revenues by 7 billion Euro.

I ricavi sono in diminuzione del 6,3% rispetto al 2008 ed è previsto un ulteriore calo del 3% nel 2010.
Revenues have declined by 6.3% when compared to 2008 and are expected to decline by another 3% in 2010.

E, dopo aver ceduto quasi tutto in questi dieci anni, dalle partecipazioni estere, agli immobili, a società innovative come Telespazio, Italtel Sirti, si annuncia la prossima cessione del 50% di Telecom Argentina.
And now, after having sold off almost everything in the past ten years, from shareholdings abroad, to real estate, through to its innovative companies such as Telespazio, Italtel and Sirti, it has now been announced that the next asset up for sale is Telecom Italia’s 50% stake in Telecom Argentina.

Si parla di investimenti nei prossimi anni quando la Rete è un colabrodo e siamo ultimi nelle classifiche europee per la diffusione della banda larga.
They talk about making investments in the coming years, but the Network is like a sieve and Italy is bottom of the list in Europe in terms of widespread access to broadband services.

Vorrei fare un semplice esercizio, da ragioniere, perché io sono un ragioniere.
As a Chartered Accountant by trade, I would like to do a simple accounting exercise.

Se la Telecom in questi dieci anni ha venduto quasi tutte le sue partecipazioni, i suoi immobili, persino le centrali telefoniche, ridotto del 50% il personale, diminuito i suoi ricavi, ridotto gli investimenti, quasi azzerato il valore del titolo e, nonostante tutto questo, il debito è rimasto lo stesso di 34 miliardi.
Given that over the past ten years, Telecom has sold off almost all of its shareholdings, its buildings and even its telephone exchanges, reduced its staff by almost 50%, reduced its revenues, reduced its investments, almost zeroed the value of its shares and, notwithstanding all of this, its debt has remained unchanged at 34 billion Euro.

La domanda è: dove sono finiti i soldi?
Then it raises an interesting question, namely, precisely what happened to all the money?

Chi ha distrutto la più importante azienda italiana nel campo dell’innovazione costruita con le tasse di generazioni di italiani?
Who is it that has destroyed this Country’s top company in the field of innovation, which was built up using the taxes of entire generations of Italians?

I soldi sono finiti in stock option milionarie, in dividendi agli azionisti del salotto buono che hanno spolpato viva la Telecom.
The money landed up in million-Euro stock options and in dividend payments to well-heeled shareholders that have eaten Telecom alive, that’s where!

E’ necessario fare un’indagine patrimoniale sui manager che in questi anni hanno gestito la Telecom per verificare il loro patrimonio prima e dopo il loro ingresso in Telecom.
We need to investigate the financial background of the managers that have run Telecom over the past few years in order to see what their assets were before and after their entry into Telecom.

Per verificare se le operazioni che hanno condotto in questi anni di cessioni del patrimonio Telecom abbiano procurato loro dei guadagni diretti o indiretti.
To check whether or not they benefited personally, directly or indirectly, from the operations they carried out in these past few years, selling off Telecom assets.

La distruzione del valore di Telecom Italia è stato il più grave danno sia economico che per il futuro sviluppo legato all’innovazione procurato al nostro Paese.
This destruction of Telecom Italia’s value has been the worst damage ever done to this Country, both in terms of the economy and in terms of innovation.

Gli azionisti e i lavoratori e le generazioni future hanno o stanno già pagando il conto.
The shareholders and workers, as well as the future generations, have paid and will continue to pay the price.

I responsabili di questa catastrofe sia politici che imprenditori vanno perseguiti.
Those responsible for this catastrophe, whether they are politicians or businessmen, must be prosecuted.

Bernabè è una persona che stimo come manager, ma che non ha fatto quello che una persona con la schiena dritta avrebbe dovuto fare:
Bernabè is someone that I greatly admire as a manager, but he has failed to do what any honest person ought to do:

chiedere conto alle precedenti gestioni, da Colaninno a Tronchetti, da Buora a Ruggiero, implicato nello scandalo delle false fatturazioni di Telecom Sparkle, delle loro azioni, dei loro enormi guadagni e in alcuni casi dell’uso privatistico dell’azienda.
namely, call the previous management to account, including everyone from Colaninno to Tronchetti and from Buora to Ruggiero, for their involvement in the Telecom Sparkle fake invoicing scandal, their shares, their huge earnings and, in some cases, for their use of the company for personal gain.

Lo spionaggio ai danni di decine di migliaia di persone fatto da dipendenti Telecom ha prodotto alla società un danno di immagine enorme.
The spying activity carried out by Telecom employees on tens of thousands of people has seriously tarnished the company’s image.

Chi lo paga?
Who is going to pay for this?

Chi risarcisce i piccoli azionisti di un titolo spazzatura?
Who is going to compensate the minority shareholders for the fact that the shares they hold have been turned into trash?

Colaninno e Gnutti hanno intascato una plusvalenza di 1,5 miliardi di euro quando hanno ceduto le loro quote a Tronchetti finanziato dalle banche, perché?
Colaninno and Gnutti pocketed capital gains amounting to 1.5 billion Euro when they sold their shares to Tronchetti who was backed by the banks, but why?

E perché i piccoli azionisti non hanno avuto nulla?
Why did the minority shareholders get nothing?

E’ immorale che siano state distribuite stock option milionarie per anni mentre decine di migliaia di persone perdevano il lavoro.
It was immoral for million-Euro stock options to be handed out for years while tens of thousands of people were losing their jobs.

E’ necessaria una legge per impedire la distribuzione di dividendi alle aziende con un indebitamento superiore al 50% del fatturato.
We need some sort of law to prevent the payment of dividends by companies whose debt is equivalent to anything more than 50% of turnover.

Qualunque piccola media azienda con un debito superiore del 30% al fatturato chiuderebbe domani mattina.
Any small to medium size business whose debt is anything more than 30% of its turnover would shut down immediately.

Telecom è morta, per salvare l’occupazione residua va venduta al più presto a Telefonica e la dorsale deve ritornare in mani pubbliche dando ad ogni operatore le stessa possibilità e non a un unico soggetto.
Telecom is dead and, in order to save the remaining jobs, the company should be sold to Telefonica as soon as possible and this backbone of the economy must once again become a public company, thereby giving every operator an equal chance instead of just one.

La banda larga in Italia è stretta, la più stretta in Europa.
In Italy, our broadband is somewhat narrow, the narrowest in all of Europe.

Anche grazie a questo Governo che tiene bloccati gli incentivi di 800 milioni per ridurre il digital divide e introduce tasse assurde come l’equo compenso sulle memorie.
This is also thanks to this government, which is holding back some 800 million Euro of incentives for the reduction of the digital divide and introducing absurd taxes, such as that on fair compensation for memories.

La diffusione della banda larga nelle abitazioni secondo dati della Commissione Europea è nella Lombardia, la più avanzata delle Regioni italiane, di soli 36 famiglie su 100, esattamente come le regioni europee più povere come la Mancha spagnola e peggio della Polonia.
According to data released by the European Commission, access to broadband services in private homes in Lombardy, the most advanced of tadvanced of the Italian Regions, is still limited to only 36 families out of every hundred, precisely the same level as in some Europe’s poorest regions, such as la Mancha in Spain, and lower than in Poland.

Dopo l’Italia ci sono solo la Romania, la Bulgaria e la Grecia.
The only countries that are still falling behind Italy are Rumania, Bulgaria and Greece.

Senza infrastrutture l’Italia non ha un futuro e neppure un presente.
Without infrastructure, Italia has no future and, for that matter, not even a here and now

Cari Bernabè e Galateri, vendete quello che è rimasto a Telefonica, restituite la dorsale allo Stato e dopo andate a casa, insieme al consiglio di amministrazione, prima del fallimento.
My dear Bernabè and Galateri, please sell what remains to Telefonica, hand this backbone back to the State and then go home, together with the rest of the members of the Board of Directors, before we face total collapse.
