Borsellino: State defeat

Sono a Palermo per ricordare Paolo Borsellino e la sua scorta, a diciotto anni da quel giorno funesto, in via D’Amelio.
I am in Palermo to remember Paolo Borsellino and his bodies guards, 18 years after that fatal, terrible day in via D’Amelio.

In via D’Amelio e a Capaci saltarono in aria i valori dello Stato, non soltanto le macchine investite dalle esplosioni.
In Capaci’s via D’Amelio the values of the State went up in the air, not just the cars that were affected by the explosions.

Aveva ragione Antonino Caponnetto, fondatore del pool antimafia di cui facevano parte Borsellino e Falcone, quando, ripreso a caldo dalle telecamere, disse con la voce strozzata dal dolore:
Antonino Caponnetto, the founder of the Antimafia team which included Borsellino and Falcone, was right when he was captured by the cameras at that moment, with a voice choked with sadness, and was heard to say:

«E’ finito tutto, è finito tutto» (guarda il video).
«It’s all finished. It’s all finished.» (watch the video).

Borsellino, così come Falcone e molti altri dopo di loro tra forze dell’ordine e fedeli servitori dello Stato, furono uccisi da facce ancora senza volto che sappiamo essere oggi nelle istituzioni.
Borsellino, like Falcone and many others that came after them, including members of the security forces and faithful servants of the State, were killed by people whose faces are still not known but that we know to be today in the institutions.

Celebrare questa giornata è un dovere morale per un Paese in cui la legalità sembra essersi dissolta nell’acido, ascoltando le sentenze e le testimonianze registrate nei processi degli ultimi anni.
Celebrating this day is a moral duty for a country in which the rule of law seems to have got dissolved in acid, when you listen to the verdicts and the testimony that have been recorded in the last few years.

Dov’è la legalità?
Where is the rule of law?

La legalità rappresenta ancora un valore per gli italiani?
Does the rule of law still represent a value for the Italians?

O è rimasto solo un gruppo di cosiddetti “manettari” a difenderla?
Or have we just got a group of so called “manettari” {handcuff guys} defending it?

Se Borsellino fosse tra noi, oggi, avrebbe un gran da fare, forse.
If Borsellino were with us now, he would have so much to do, perhaps.

Certamente, però, sarebbe ancora vivo.
Certainly, however, he would still be alive.

Nel XXI secolo la criminalità non ha più bisogno di uccidere, poiché elegge i suoi rappresentanti in Parlamento, li colloca nella magistratura, nelle Forze dell’Ordine, nell’imprenditoria.
In the twenty first century, organised crime no longer needs to kill, given that it elects its own representatives to Parliament, it places them in the magistracy, in the security forces and in the world of enterprise.

E se Paolo fosse arrivato a scoprire realtà scomode, allora sarebbe stato semplicemente rimosso dall’incarico come è successo con de Magistris, Apicella, Forleo.
And if Paolo had managed to understand uncomfortable realities, well he would simply have been removed from his position as happened to de Magistris, Apicella, and Forleo.

Ma sarebbe ancora vivo.
But he would still be alive.

Borsellino è morto nel ’92 perché rappresentava gli italiani che non volevano trattare con la criminalità.
Borsellino died in 1992 because he represented the Italians who didn’t want to deal with organised crime.

Oggi essere un rappresentante della criminalità organizzata significa essere importanti e muovere le sorti del Paese.
Today being a representative of organised crime means being important and determining the destiny of the country.

Oggi avere rapporti con la criminalità ti garantisce un posto in prima fila, un posto da senatore o addirittura da sottosegretario.
Today having relations with organised crime, guarantees you a front line position, a post as senator or even of undersecretary.

Un posto al sole, insomma.
Basically, a place in the sun.

Oggi la criminalità è arrogantemente presente in ogni settore ed è la prima industria del Paese.
Today organised crime is arrogantly present in every sector and it is the top industry of the country.

E’ presente più dello Stato tra la popolazione, offre lavoro, appalti, soldi e fortuna, e celebra anche lei la morte di Borsellino distruggendone le icone che lo ricordano.
It is present among the population, more than the State. It offers work, contracts, money and fortune and it too celebrates Borsellino’s death by destroying the icons that remember him.

Le sculture dei due giudici danneggiate a Palermo ricordano uno Stato contrapposto alle mafie, una contrapposizione superata dal dialogo e dalla collusione odierni.
The sculptures of two judges damaged in Palermo remind us of a State fighting the mafias, a position that has been superseded by the dialogue and the collusion of these days.

Se Paolo fosse riuscito a portare a termine il suo lavoro, tenendo lontano lo Stato dalle mafie, vivremmo in un’Italia diversa.
If Paolo had managed to bring his work to a conclusion, keeping the State at a distance from the mafias, we would be living in a different Italy.

Borsellino aveva gli strumenti per cambiare le cose, e intorno a lui c’era una popolazione che lo sosteneva.
Borsellino had the tools to change things, and surrounding him there was a population supporting him.

Nel cuore dei cittadini lui era un eroe, mentre coloro che lo volevano ammazzare erano topi che si muovevano all’ombra delle fogne.
In the heart of the citizens, he was a hero, while those who wanted to kill him were rats moving in the shadow of the sewers.

Oggi gli incontri tra politici e criminali avvengono alla luce del sole.
Today meetings between politicians and criminals take place in the light of day.

I topi sono usciti allo scoperto e sono entrati in Parlamento.
The rats have come out into the open and have entered Parliament.

Paolo in quel 19 luglio non aveva intorno solo la sua scorta (Agostino Catalano, Emanuela Loi, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina e Claudio Traina) ma tutti gli italiani.
On that day of 19 July, Paolo had not only his body guards around him (Agostino Catalano, Emanuela Loi, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina and Claudio Traina) but all the Italians.

Per questo con l’uccisione di Borsellino ha perso l’Italia intera.
This is why, with the killing of Borsellino, it’s the whole of Italy that has lost out.

Le agende rosse innalzate in cielo, oggi a Palermo, devono essere un punto da cui ripartire.
The little red books that were waved in the air today in Palermo, have to be a starting point.

Gli italiani, in questo giorno di ricordo, hanno una grande occasione per riflettere.
The Italians, in this day of remembering, have a great occasion for reflection.

I vari Dell’Utri, Cuffaro, Cosentino sono il prodotto di una deriva democratica per cui diversi servitori dello Stato hanno perso la vita negli anni ’90.
The various people like Dell’Utri, Cuffaro, and Cosentino are the product of a democratic drift for which many servants of the State have lost their lives in the 1990s.

Il miglior omaggio alla memoria di Borsellino che i cittadini possano fare è quello di assumersi l’impegno di rigettare i topi nelle fogne.
The best way of paying homage to the memory of Borsellino that the citizens can do, is to take on the commitment to reject the sewer rats.

E con loro chi gli ha aperto i tombini.
And with them, all those who have opened up the exit routes from the sewers.
