ICT research: EU funded WOUNDMONITOR helps pinpoint bacteria and speed up healing in burn victims
Ricerca nel campo delle TIC: il progetto WOUNDMONITOR, finanziato dalla UE, contribuisce a individuare i batteri e ad accelerare la guarigione delle vittime di ustioni

More than 4000 people die in the EU each year because of accidents caused by fire and many thousands more are hospitalised to receive treatment for burns.
Ogni anno nella UE muoiono più di 4 000 persone a seguito di ustioni provocate dal fuoco e diverse migliaia sono ricoverate per essere sottoposte a terapie specifiche.

Thanks to EU-funded research, medical experts will be able to more quickly identify the harmful bacteria or fungus which may be lurking in the wounds of burn victims and causing an infection, speeding up the diagnostic and healing process by days.
Grazie a una ricerca finanziata dalla UE i medici saranno in grado di individuare più rapidamente i batteri o funghi dannosi che si annidano nelle ferite degli ustionati, provocando infezioni, e quindi di ridurre di diversi giorni i tempi della diagnosi e della terapia.

Until now, doctors have had to rely on microbiological tests that took several days to identify which bacteria were causing the infection.
Fino ad oggi i medici dovevano affidarsi a esami microbiologici che richiedevano diversi giorni per individuare quali batteri fossero alla base dell’infezione.

Researchers from Germany, Italy, Lithuania and the UK have developed a small electronic device which can pinpoint the type of bacteria in just a few minutes, by identifying the minute amounts of gas the bacteria are producing.
Ricercatori tedeschi, italiani, lituani e britannici hanno ora messo a punto una piccola apparecchiatura elettronica che consente in pochi minuti di identificare i tipi di batteri basandosi sui minuscoli quantitativi di gas che gli stessi batteri producono.

The quicker infections can be diagnosed, the faster patients can be treated, which can in turn lower the cost of lengthy hospital stays.
Quanto più rapidamente sono diagnosticate le infezioni tanto più rapidamente possono essere curati i pazienti, riducendo così la durata della degenza in ospedale.

Most of the burns in the EU occur at home or at work and are more predominant among vulnerable groups like the elderly or young children.
Il maggior numero di vittime di ustioni nella UE si registra in ambito domestico o lavorativo e tra i gruppi più vulnerabili quali gli anziani e i bambini.

Early diagnosis and treatment of infection in burn patients is critical.
La diagnosi e il trattamento precoci delle infezioni nei pazienti ustionati rivestono un’importanza fondamentale.

However, despite advances in modern medicine, it can take up to three days for microbiological tests to identify the bacteria present in the wound.
Tuttavia, nonostante i progressi registrati dalla medicina moderna, con gli esami microbiologici occorrono fino a tre giorni per individuare i batteri presenti nelle ferite.

Only after this identification can doctors select the appropriate treatment.
E i medici possono decidere la terapia opportuna soltanto quando tali batteri siano stati identificati.

Traditionally, medical students were taught to recognise bacterial infections by their characteristic odour.
Un tempo si insegnava agli studenti di medicina a riconoscere le infezioni batteriche dal loro odore caratteristico.

Clinicians and researchers from Germany, Italy, Lithuania and the UK in the WOUNDMONITOR project used the same approach, but were helped by the latest information and communication technologies (ICTs).
Il team di medici e ricercatori del progetto WOUNDMONITOR (tedeschi, italiani, lituani e britannici) ha utilizzato lo stesso approccio, potendosi avvalere tuttavia delle più recenti tecnologie dell’informazione e della comunicazione (TIC).

The researchers developed an instrument that can identify types of bacteria from the small amount of volatile gases, recognisable by smell, that they emit.
I ricercatori hanno messo a punto uno strumento in grado di individuare i tipi di batteri dalla piccole quantità di gas volatili (riconoscibili all’olfatto) che essi emettono.

The experts first identified the three major types of bacteria:
Gli esperti hanno individuato in primo luogo i tre principali tipi di batteri:

staphylococcus, streptococcus and pseudomonas, which account for about 80 percent of the bacterial infections found in burns.
stafilococchi, streptococchi e pseudomonas, che rappresentano circa l’80% delle infezioni batteriche riscontrate nelle ustioni.

They then identified the volatile chemicals spread by the bacteria when they multiply.
Essi hanno quindi identificato le sostanze chimiche volatili diffuse dai batteri quando quest’ultimi si moltiplicano.

With this information, the team designed an instrument – about the size of an A4 file – containing eight gas sensors.
Sulla base di tali informazioni il team ha quindi messo a punto uno strumento – grosso modo delle dimensioni di un foglio A4 – contenente otto sensori per la rilevazione dei gas.

The pattern of the responses from the sensors represents the characteristics of the chemicals present, by which the bacteria are identified.
Il profilo delle risposte dei sensori rappresenta le caratteristiche delle sostanze chimiche presenti, grazie alle quali sono identificati i batteri.

This complex but very compact instrument has been tested in a hospital in Manchester (UK) and at a Kaunas regional hospital (Lithuania).
Questo strumento complesso ma estremamente compatto è stato sperimentato in un ospedale di Manchester (Regno Unito) e in un ospedale regionale di Kaunas (Lituania), con risultati molto soddisfacenti.

Results have been very satisfactory and the researchers have positively assessed the instrument’s risk level.
I ricercatori hanno inoltre valutato positivamente il livello di rischio dell’apparecchiatura.

Several commercial companies have shown interest in the WOUNDMONITOR instrument and negotiations are underway to qualify the instrument for commercial use.
Diverse società commerciali hanno manifestato interesse per lo strumento elaborato da WOUNDMONITOR e sono in corso negoziati per ottenere l’autorizzazione all’utilizzo commerciale del prodotto.

The EU funded the project with €1.67 million from its Sixth Framework Programme (6th FWP) for research.
La UE ha finanziato il progetto con un contributo di 1,67 milioni di euro nell’ambito del Sesto programma quadro di ricerca (6° PQ).
