Is the stomach revolutionary?

Quando i francesi chiesero più pane, Maria Antonietta, moglie di Luigi XVI, esclamò:
When the French asked for bread, Marie Antoinette, wife of King Louis XVI, exclaimed:

“Se non hanno pane, che mangino brioches”.
“If they have no bread, let them eat cake.

Ne seguì la Rivoluzione con i suoi cesti di teste mozzate.
What followed was the Revolution with its baskets of chopped off heads.

Mubarak, Ben Alì e Gheddafi invece delle brioches hanno dispensato del piombo caldo al popolo.
Mubarak, Ben Alì and Gaddafi instead of cake, have distributed hot lead to the people.

Qualche centinaio di morti tra i manifestanti non è comunque servito a fermare la rivoluzione nordafricana.
A few hundred dead among the demonstrators has not been useful in stopping the North African Revolution.

Mubarak è stato colpito da infarto, Ben Alì è scomparso, forse deceduto, e Gheddafi si è riparato dietro ai cecchini e all’isolamento del suo Paese.
Mubarak has been struck down by a heart attack, Ben Alì has disappeared and Gaddafi is taking refuge behind snipers and the isolation of his country.

Esiste un indice della miseria, il misery index, un indicatore economico, creato da Arthur Okun, che misura la povertà di uno Stato.
There’s an economic indicator, called the misery index, created by Arthur Okun and it measures the poverty of a State.

L’indice è dato dalla somma della disoccupazione e dell’inflazione.
The index is found by adding the rate of unemployment to the inflation rate.

Maggiore è l’indice, maggiore la miseria.
The higher the value, the greater the misery.

Nell’ultima classifica l’Egitto è al 6° posto, la Grecia (vicina al default) al 7° e la Tunisia al 9°.
In the latest classification, Egypt was in 6th position, Greece (close to defaulting) in 7th place and Tunisia in 9th place.

Una relazione è evidente.
A relationship is evident.

Ma chi compare ai primi quattro posti?
But who is seen in the first four positions?

Il Venezuela di Chavez è primo assoluto, seguono Sudafrica, Spagna e Pakistan.
Chavez’s Venezuela is at the very top, followed by South Africa, Spain and Pakistan.

Questi Paesi sono tra gli indiziati per le rivolte prossime venture, più o meno violente.
These countries are among those marked out for forthcoming revolts in the near future.

Sorprende la posizione negativa della Spagna, così come quella strabiliante dell’Italia, 23esima con un indice migliore della media UE e di Francia, Inghilterra e Repubblica Ceca.
The negative position of Spain is surprising, as is the astonishing position of Italy, in 23rd position with a better score than the average for the EU and better than France, UK and the Czech Republic.

Finalmente un dato positivo.
Finally a positive score.

Spezziamo le nacchere alla Spagna (22 di indice della miseria) con un 10, 1, meno della metà (fonti:Eurostat e IMF).
Let’s split the castanets with Spain (misery index 22) with 10, 1,- less than half (source:Eurostat and IMF).

Il nostro indice, riferito all’anno 2010, è composto da 1,5% di inflazione e 8,6% di disoccupazione.
Our score relates to the year 2010 and it is made up of 1.5% inflation and 8.6% unemployment.

Ma questi dati esistono solo nei libri dei sogni tremortiani.
But these figures exist just in the books of “Tremorti’s” dreams.

Infatti, la stessa Istat ha fornito un dato per la disoccupazione del 12% (3,4% in più di quella ufficiale), ma in realtà, se si considera chi il lavoro non lo cerca più, è intorno al 14%.
In fact, ISTAT itself has given a figure of 12% for unemployment (3.4% higher than the official value), but in reality, if you consider those that are no longer looking for work, it’s about 14%.

L’inflazione è calcolata su un paniere che non tiene conto del reale costo della vita.
Inflation is calculated on the basis of a ‘basket’ that does not take account of the real cost of living.

Chi paga bollette, riscaldamento, benzina, pedaggi autostradali e beni di prima necessità sa benissimo che l’aumento dell’inflazione vale almeno il 5% annuo (3,5% in più di quella dichiarata).
Anyone who is paying the electricity bill, central heating, petrol, motorway tolls and basic necessity goods knows very well that inflation is at at least 5% a year (3.5% higher than that declared).

Se sommiamo soltanto la maggiore disoccupazione Istat, l’Italia arriva al 13,5, vicino a Irlanda e Portogallo.
If we use the ISTAT figure for unemployment, then Italy works out at 13.5%, close to Ireland and Portugal.

Se proseguiamo, addizionando il 2% in più di disoccupati scoraggiati, arriviamo a 15,5, a un’incollatura da Turchia e Tunisia.
If we keep going, adding in the extra 2% of discouraged unemployed people, we arrive at 15.5 – a hair’s breadth from Turkey and Tunisia.

Infine, se valutiamo l’inflazione percepita giungiamo alla vetta di 19 come indice della miseria, quinti assoluti a pari merito con l’Egitto e prima della Grecia.
Finally, if we make use of the perceived inflation we reach the top with 19 as the score for the misery index, so in fifth position on a par with Egypt and ahead of Greece.

At the time of ‘Bottino Craxi’, there was optimism of desire, today, there’s the optimism of desperation.
