La Grande Onda
The Big Wave

Sono ipnotizzato dalla marea di metallo, macchine, camion, tir, barche.
I have been hypnotised by the tide of metal, cars, trucks, trailers, and boats.

Uniti insieme dallo tsunami.
United together by the tsunami.

Sento il fascino dell’abisso, come quando in sogno cado dall’alto in un precipitare verso l’ignoto, in una dimensione sconosciuta, ma rassicurante.
I feel the fascination of the abyss, like when I fall from a height in my dreams and I fall towards the unknown, in an unknown dimension, but a reassuring one.

Un gigantesco magnete di acqua ha trasformato lamiere e cose in un’onda inconcepibile che sembra formata di spazzatura e che dilaga in modo scomposto, come un’immenso ragno, per i campi e per le città giapponesi e trasforma le strade in fiumi in piena.
A gigantic dynamo of water has transformed sheets of steel and things in an unimaginable wave that seems to be formed of rubbish and that spreads out in a dishevelled way, like a massive spider, across the fields and the cities of Japan and it transforms the roads into rivers in flood.

In una fotografia c’è un gorgo immenso, lo stesso che deve avere immaginato Edgar Allan Poe per il suo racconto “Una discesa nel Maelström”.
In a photo there’s an immense vortex, the one that Edgar Allan Poe must have imagined for his story “A descent into the Maelström”.

L’onda di dieci metri generata dalle profondità del mare ha sommerso villaggi e città, anche a chilometri dalla costa.
The ten metre waves generated from the depth of the sea has submerged villages and cities, even at a distance of kilometres for the coast.

Dall’alto appare una Venezia sconfinata, muta, bombardata, senza segni di vita tranne qualche persona sui tetti che agita dei lenzuoli bianchi per attirare l’attenzione degli elicotteri.
From above it looks like an unbounded Venice, silent, bombarded, without signs of life apart from a few people on the roofs waving white sheets to attract the attention of the helicopters.

Il mare ha inghiottito la terra e dove si è ritirato ha lasciato gigantesche bidonville con delle grandi pozze dove galleggiano le auto come papere meccaniche.
The sea has invaded the earth and where it has retreated it has left gigantic rubbish towns with those great potholes full of water where the cars are floating around like mechanical goslings.

In un’immagine, un gruppo di case è circondato dai rifiuti dell’onda che sembra infinita all’orizzonte.
In one picture, a group of houses is surrounded by the refuse from the wave that seems to stretch out to infinity on the horizon.

Ogni corpo meccanico trascinato dalle acque ha lo stesso identico colore brunastro.
Every mechanical body dragged by the waters has the same identical brownish colour.

Sembrano Frankestein di acciaio, zombie di macchine, mostri post industriali di un film di Romero alla ricerca della vita che è ancora sopravvissuta.
They seem like steel Frankesteins, automobile zombies, post-industrial monsters in a film by Romero in search of the life that has still survived.

Ci sono esplosioni di fuochi nella marea metallica in movimento.
There are explosions of fires in the moving tide of metal.

Il fuoco e l’acqua convivono in questa spaventosa sera di marzo in Giappone.
Fire and water are living together in this shocking March evening in Japan.

Lo tsunami si è invitato per cena, ha bussato alla sua maniera.
The tsunami has invited itself to dinner; it knocked on the door in its own way.

Mancano elettricità e acqua potabile in molte zone.
There’s no electricity or water in many neighbourhoods.

Un treno è scomparso.
A train has disappeared.

Gli incendi hanno colpito una raffineria e la centrale nucleare di Onagawa.
Fire has hit a refinery and the Onagawa nuclear power station.

Il governo ha evacuato duemila persone vicino alla centrale atomica di Fukushima.
The government has evacuated two thousand people near the atomic power station at Fukushima.

Non ci sarà, forse, l’inverno nucleare nel Sol Levante.
It perhaps won’t be the nuclear winter of the Land of the Rising Sun.

Ci affidiamo, come sempre, al fato.
As ever we place our trust in fate.
