I nuovi cannibali
The new cannibals

Il pentolone bolle.
The massive pan is on the boil.

Il fuoco è acceso.
The gas is on.

Ci sono ospiti per cena.
There are guests for dinner.

Dovrebbero portare con sé il cibo (come sempre), salumi e cotechini, salmone e parmigiano, vini e dolce, ma sono a mani vuote.
They should be bringing the food with them (as ever), salami and pork sausages, salmon and parmesan cheese, but they arrive empty-handed.

I partiti li accolgono come se fossero stati invitati, ma sono arrivati da soli senza avvisare nessuno.
The parties welcome them as though they were guests, but they came on their own without telling anyone.

Qualcuno ha una carota e qualche cipolla per insaporire l’acqua.
Someone has a carrot and a few onions to give flavour to the water.

>>> I nuovi arrivati hanno fame, una fame atavica di democrazia.
The newcomers are hungry, they have an atavistic hunger for democracy.

I partiti li trattano da salvatori.
The parties treat them like saviours.

I cittadini autoinvitati e i partiti sono, devono essere, diventeranno, una nuova, inscindibile, monolitica prova della democrazia.
The citizens who have invited themselves and the parties, are, have to be, a new, inseparable, monolithic demonstration of democracy.

Lo dicono i segretari di sinistra, di centro e di destra!
That’s what the secretaries on the Left, Right and Centre say!

Deve essere vero se nessuno li smentisce.
It must be true if no one says it’s not.

Nessun partito ha perso.
No party has lost.

Quasi tutti hanno vinto con i candidati degli altri, spesso contro i candidati degli altri, ma che importa…
Almost all have won with the candidates of the others, often against the candidates of the others, but what does it matter …

Scurdammoce ‘o passato.
“Scurdammoce ‘o passato.”

I segretari di partito e i loro lacchè, i giornalisti, si sentono come meravigliosi surfer sopra l’onda del cambiamento, un’onda usata per salire ancora più in alto, per viaggiare con il vento in poppa.
The party secretaries and their lackeys, the journalists, feel like marvellous surfers on the wave of change, a wave used to rise even higher, to travel with a favourable wind.

La tavola è infine apparecchiata, il solito desco al quale i cittadini fanno da camerieri e mangiano gli avanzi.
Anyway the table is already set, the usual dining table at which the citizens act as waiters and eat up the left-overs.

I piatti sono però desolatamente vuoti, la fame è tanta.
The dishes, however are desolately empty, there’s such hunger.

Qualcuno propone, forse Veltroni, idea geniale, di sacrificare il vitello grasso per il ritorno dei figli prodighi alla casa comune della partitocrazia.
Someone makes a proposal; perhaps it’s Veltroni, a great idea, to sacrifice the fattened calf for the return of the prodigal sons to the common house of party-ocracy.

Di vitelli grassi non c’è neppure l’ombra, ma i vitelloni grassi non mancano.
There’s not even a glimpse of a fattened calf, but there’s no lack of big fat beef cattle.

Il pentolone bolliva per loro sin dall’inizio e non lo sapevano, e i vitelloni grassi sono lì, seduti con la forchetta in mano, i vari Bersani e Letta, Fassino, Fini e Casini, Vendola e Cicchitto.
The big pan was bubbling away for them all along, and they didn’t know it, and the big fat beef cattle are there, seated with their forks in their hands, the various people like Bersani e Letta, Fassino, Fini and Casini, Vendola and Cicchitto.

Un pentolone celtico a parte è riservato a Borghezio.
A separate saucepan is reserved for Borghezio.

I cannibali della partitocrazia non faranno sconti, sono a dieta da decenni.
The cannibals of party-ocracy offer no discounts. They’ve been on a diet for decades.

Dei partiti non rimarranno neppure le ossa.
Not even the bones of the parties will be left.

Il vento del cambiamento spira sempre più forte e non può essere imbrigliato.
The wind of change is blowing ever stronger and it cannot be contained.

Ha iniziato a soffiare in Grecia, poi in Nord Africa, ora in Spagna, domani in Italia.
It started blowing in Greece, then in North Africa, now in Spain, tomorrow in Italy.

La democrazia diretta non tollera l’intermediazione dei partiti.
Direct democracy will not tolerate the intermediation of the parties.

Non delega il proprio futuro a dei leader televisivi di cartapesta.
It will not delegate its own future to the papier-mâché TV leaders.

A cialtroni che si autoeleggono rappresentanti per lucro o per visibilità.
To good-for-nothings that elect themselves as representatives for money or for visibility.

Nel nuovo mondo ognuno conta uno.
In the new world, each one counts for one.

I nuovi cannibali hanno fame.
The cannibals are hungry.

Loro non si arrenderanno mai (ma gli conviene?).
They will never give up (but is it in their interests?).

Noi neppure.
Neither will we.
