Maledetti bastardi, sono ancora vivo!
You bastards, I’m still alive!  

Questa mattina mi sono svegliato con la bocca impastata e la testa pesante.
This morning I woke up with a furry mouth and a heavy head.

Sono i sintomi di una giornata di disincanto e di pessimismo.
Those are the symptoms of a day of disenchantment and pessimism.

L’umore gira come una pallina della roulette e ogni tanto si ferma su un numero sul quale non hai puntato.
Your mood goes round like a ball on the roulette table and every so often it stops on a number that you haven’t bet on.

Oggi è uno di quei giorni.
Today is one of those days.

Ripenso a un film di anni fa, Papillon, quando Steve McQueen era un esempio irraggiungibile per un ragazzo.
It makes me think of a film of many years ago, Papillon, when Steve McQueen was an unachievable example for a young lad.

Papillon sogna. Cammina in un deserto.
Papillon dreams. He’s walking in a desert.

Dopo ore di marcia incontra un tribunale, approntato sulla sabbia, in tutto e per tutto uguale a quelli di città.
After hours of walking he comes across a tribunal, set up in the sand, equal in every aspect to one in a city.

I giudici lo guardano severi.
The judges look at him severely.

>>> Lo aspettavano.
They were waiting for him.

Il giudizio è il massimo della pena.
The verdict is the maximum possible punishment.

Papillon chiede quale sia il reato che gli viene imputato.
Papillon asks what crime he has been charged with.

Non ricorda di aver fatto nulla, né di aver violato le leggi della Repubblica.
He doesn’t remember having done anything, nor of breaking any laws of the Republic.

Impossibile che sia ritenuto colpevole.
Impossible that he’s been judged guilty.

Un giudice gli legge le motivazioni della sentenza.
A judge reads out to him the reasoning behind the verdict.

L’accusa è di aver sprecato la sua vita.
The accusation is to have wasted his life.

Papillon allora abbassa lo sguardo, ammette la sua colpa, volta le spalle allo scranno del giudice e ritorna da dove era venuto.
Then Papillon lowers his eyes, admits his guilt, he turns his back on the Judge’s bench and goes back where he came from.  

Quanti italiani si riconoscerebbero colpevoli?
How many Italians would accept that they are guilty?

Il cuore di tenebra dell’Italia è questa malia, questa indifferenza che sconfina nel cinismo che non riesci a scuotere.
Italy’s heart of darkness is this enchantment, this indifference that borders on cynicism that doesn’t manage to get shaken off.

Li ho visti troppe volte quegli occhi immobili, sbarrati che ti trapassano quando gli gridi in faccia il nostro fallimento come Nazione e quindi il loro.
Too many times, I have seen those fixed staring eyes, that look through you when you cry out to them that we as a nation have failed and thus they have failed.

Quanti siete perdio?
How many are there of you for God’s sake?

Cosa vi è successo?
What has happened to you?

Cosa sognate quando viene la notte?
What do you dream about when night comes?

Quali sono le vostre ambizioni per l’unica vita che mai avrete?

I’ll be better tomorrow.

Ho bisogno di qualche sano momento di depressione profonda, mi aiuta a rimbalzare verso l’alto.
I need a few healthy moments of deep depression.It helps me bounce back.

Mi dà lo slancio.
It gives me a boost.

Ieri mi ha fermato la Polizia, mi ha chiesto il registrato dello spettacolo che ho tenuto a Fermo.
Yesterday the police stopped me. They asked for the recording of the show I did at Fermo.

Gli ho detto che non ho alcuna registrazione.
I told them that I had no recording.

Sono stati gentili, mi hanno accennato a denunce per un possibile vilipendio a Napolitano e mi hanno salutato.
They were courteous. They mentioned a denunciation for a possible charge of “public defamation” of Napolitano and they bade me farewell.

Napolitano… parlamentare nel 1953, l’anno della morte di Stalin.
Napolitano … a parliamentarian in 1953, the year of Stalin’s death.

Il simbolo di un’Italia pietrificata.
The symbol of a petrified Italy.

Ci sarà forse un giorno un cantore, un nuovo Pasolini, che racconterà ai nostri nipoti il diario del grande saccheggio, di quando il Bel Paese fu depredato e ridotto ad appendice politica e economica del mondo.
Perhaps one day there’ll be a bard, a new Pasolini, who will tell our descendents the story of the great sacking, about when the “Bel Paese” was plundered and reduced to a political and economic appendix of the world.

Spiegherà come eravamo e come avremmo potuto essere.
He will explain how we were and how we could have been.

Lo farà con i paesaggi scomparsi, con le intelligenze disperse in una moderna diaspora, con industrie di cui rimane solo il nome, con una democrazia tradita.
He will do that with the landscapes disappeared, with the intelligences dispersed in a modern Diaspora, with industries that remain only in name, with a democracy betrayed.

Forse si avventurerà in una ricerca dei responsabili di una tale piaga.
Perhaps he will venture out into the search for those responsible for that curse.

Ma non ci sono responsabili.
But no one is responsible.

La colpa è di un morbo che ha avvelenato la mente di uno dei popoli più brillanti mai esistiti e che non sa più chi è.
The blame lies with a disease that poisoned the mind of one of the most brilliant people that ever existed and that no longer know who they are.

Che vaga come un cieco nella notte e se lo prendi per un braccio per accompagnarlo sulla strada si ritrae e ti insulta.
That wanders around like a blind man in the night and if you take him by his arm to walk with him on the road, he pulls back and insults you.

Non è cieco, quello che deve vedere lo sa bene.
He’s not blind.He knows really well what he has to see.

Non ci sono cure per questa malattia che non vengano da sé stessi.
There are no cures for this illness apart from those that come from within.

Questo corpo indolente del Paese che non si muove, non si indigna, trangugia qualunque menzogna mi fa paura.
This indolent body of the country that doesn’t budge, doesn’t get indignant, that gulps down any lie, frightens me.

Quando mi guardo allo specchio mi vedo più vecchio, qualche volta stanco o sfiduciato, ma sereno.
When I look at myself in the mirror, I see myself older, sometimes tired and disheartened, but serene.

Il 10 settembre sarò davanti a Montecitorio per chiedere che la legge Parlamento Pulito firmata da 350.000 cittadini venga messa in discussione al Senato.
On 10 September, I’ll be in front of Montecitorio to ask for the “Parlamento Pulito” {Clean up Parliament} law, signed by 350,000 citizens, to be discussed by the Senate.

Rimarrò quanto serve.
I’ll stay there for as long as is necessary.

Anche se sarò solo.
Even if I’m alone.

Loro non si arrenderanno mai (ma gli conviene?).
They will never give up (but is it in their interests?).

Noi neppure.
Neither will we.
