The bunker

Quando finisce un’era chi vi è dentro può ritenere di essere alla fine dei tempi e rifiutare l’evento oppure guardare oltre.
When one era is ending, anyone who is within it can consider themselves to be at the end of time and deny the event or they can look beyond.

E’ evidente che il modello capitalista basato sul profitto senza limiti, sulla crescita e sul consumo del pianeta è fallito da tempo, anche se i governi non lo vogliono riconoscere.
It’s evident that the capitalistic model based on limitless profit, on growth and on the consumption of the planet has finished some time ago, even though the governments don’t want to recognise that.

La guerra del petrolio iniziata almeno con la prima invasione dell’Iraq di Bush padre e proseguita fino ad ad oggi con l’occupazione dell’Afghanistan e l’aggressione alla Libia è solo il più evidente dei sintomi della nostra autodistruzione.
The war over oil started at least before the invasion of Iraq by Bush senior and carried on up until now with the occupation of Afghanistan and the aggression against Libya is only the most evident of the symptoms of our self-destruction.

Il modello basato sulla mobilità individuale e sui trasporti mondiali delle merci, le pere cilene in Gran Bretagna o i pomodori cinesi in Italia non ha alcuna motivazione logica, né economica.
The model based on individual mobility and on the world transportation of merchandise, Chilean pears in Great Britain or Chinese tomatoes in Italy has no logical or economic motivation.

Nessuno si ferma per chiedersi: “Ha senso la crescita? E cosa significa esattamente?”.
No one stops to ask:”Does growth make sense? And what does it mean exactly?

La crescita è un nuovo tabù, un moloch moderno adorato come un tempo Giove o Apollo, con i suoi moderni sacerdoti: il FMI, il WTO, la BCE e i suoi templi:
Growth is a new taboo, a modern Moloch that is adored as in the times of Jupiter and Apollo, with its modern priests: the IMF, the WTO, the ECB and its temples:

i palazzi delle Borse, le maestose sedi delle banche (le nuove chiese) nei centri delle città.
the Stock Exchanges, the majestic headquarters of the banks (the new churches) in the city centres.

We are so permeated by the myth of growth that we take it for granted as though it is ineluctable and we live it as an act of faith.

Quando però lo specchio si rompe e la verità non si può più rimandare, allora, come scrive Slavoj Žižek, filosofo e psicanalista sloveno, nel suo libro “Vivere alla fine dei tempi” vi è l’elaborazione del lutto che avviene in cinque fasi.
However, when the mirror is broken and the truth can no longer be put off, then, as written by Slavoj Žižek, a Slovenian philosopher and psycho-analyst in his book called “Living in the End Times”, there is an elaboration of the mourning that takes place in 5 phases.

Per spiegarlo associa la consapevolezza del crollo del nostro modello economico e sociale alla scoperta di una malattia terminale.
To explain them, he associates the consciousness of the collapse of our economic and social model to the discovery of a terminal illness.

Il primo stadio è il rifiuto:
The first stage is denial:

non esiste la crisi e neppure il buco nell’ozono, i ghiacciai si sono sempre ritirati ciclicamente, il surriscaldamento del pianeta è un’invenzione dei media, le automobili sono necessarie per lo sviluppo della civiltà, il PIL è l’alfa e l’omega delle nazioni.
the crisis does not exist and neither does the hole in the ozone layer, the glaciers have always been retreating cyclically, the overheating of the planet is an invention of the media, automobiles are necessary for the development of civilisation, the GDP is the alpha and the omega of the nations.

Il secondo passo è la collera:
The second step is anger:

i movimenti no global sono i nuovi barbari alle frontiere, chi non consuma è un pessimista e chi consuma invece un patriota.
The “no-global” movements are the new barbarians at the frontiers, anyone who doesn’t consume is a pessimist and on the other hand anyone who consumes is a patriot.

I governi e le multinazionali che vedono franare le basi del loro potere pensano “Non può succedere, non a me”(*).
And the multinationals who see the basis of their power collapsing are thinking: “This cannot happen, it cannot happen to me.” (*)

Il malato cerca quindi di venire a patti per rimandare il triste evento della sua dipartita:
Thus the sick person tries to come to an understanding to put off the sad event of his death:

nuove manovre economiche, rientro del debito pubblico, tagli ai servizi sociali, aumento di ogni tipo di tassazione, scomparsa delle pensioni.
new economic manoeuvres, a reduction of the public debt, cuts to social services, increase of every type of taxation, disappearance of pensions.

Viene quindi la fase della depressione nella quale per chi è al potere tutto è lecito, comportamenti da basso impero, alleanze con i poteri criminali, corruzione dilagante, nuove guerre.
Then comes the phase of depression in which for whoever is in power, everything is permitted, a behaviour characteristic of the decline of the Western Roman Empire, alliances with criminal powers, widespread corruption, new wars.

Pensa a godersi la vita che gli rimane.
He thinks about enjoying the life he has left.

Après moi, le déluge.
“Après moi, le deluge.”

L’ultimo stadio è l’accettazione in cui il potere si rassegna, si rinchiude in un bunker e aspetta la fine.
The last stage is acceptance in which the “power” resigns itself, closes itself in its bunker and awaits the end.

Il mondo, in generale, si trova tra la prima e la seconda fase, tra il rifiuto e la collera.
In general, the world is somewhere in between the first and the second stage, between denial and anger.

In Italia ci siamo portati avanti e stiamo transitando dalla terza alla quarta fase, tra il venire a patti con la realtà e la depressione.
In Italy we have moved forward and we are in transit from the third to the fourth phase, between “coming to an arrangement with reality” and depression.

Tra poco ci sarà l’assalto al bunker.
In a bit there will be the assault on the bunker.

Loro non si arrenderanno mai (ma gli conviene?).
They will never give up (but is it in their interests?).

Noi neppure.
Neither will we.
