Open letter to Mario Monti

“Cittadino Monti,
“Citizen Monti,

lei ha una legittimità relativa a ricoprire la funzione di presidente del Consiglio.
You have a relative legitimacy to hold the position as President of the Council.

Lei è stato nominato dallo spread, non dagli italiani.
You were appointed by the “spread”, not by the Italians.

Ha la grande fortuna di succedere al peggior governo degli ultimi 150 anni, reso possibile da una legge elettorale incostituzionale.
You have the great good fortune to be following on from the worst government of the last 150 years, made possible by an unconstitutional electoral law.

Peggio è impossibile fare.
It’s impossible to do worse than that.

Ha, in apparenza, le mani libere.
It would seem that you have a free hand.

Può decidere (quasi) tutto.
You can decide (almost) everything.

I partiti sono sullo sfondo, pura tappezzeria.
The parties are at rock bottom, pure wallpaper.

Le elezioni non si possono tenere per evitare un default quasi certo e perché, con questa legge elettorale, senza preferenze e un ricambio in Parlamento dopo un numero massimo di legislature, non cambierebbe nulla.
Elections cannot be held to avoid a default that is almost certain and because, with this electoral law, without preferences and a change of faces in Parliament after a maximum number of legislatures, it would change nothing.

It is said that you have a great responsibility, that you are the final possibility to save the country.

Io non credo che sia corretto addossarle questo peso immane.
I don’t think that it is right to place this enormous burden on you.

Lei, da solo, o anche con una squadra di professori e di tecnici, può fare ben poco senza il sostegno dell’opinione pubblica.
You, on your own, or even with a team of professors and of technical people, can do very little without the support of the general public.

La luna di miele che sta attraversando, dovuta alla “liberazione di Berlusconi” più che alla sua figura, potrebbe rivelarsi molto breve.
The honeymoon that you are experiencing, due to the “liberation from Berlusconi” rather than to yourself, could reveal itself to be very short.

Il suo successo sarà determinato dalle sue azioni e dal consenso che queste avranno nel Paese reale, quello dei movimenti e delle associazioni, non certo quello dei partiti, ormai simulacro di democrazia.
Your success will be determined by your actions and by the consensus that these actions have in the real country, the country of the movements and the associations, and certainly not that of the parties, that are by now a simulacrum of democracy.

Mi permetto quindi, anche per le persone che mi seguono, ormai da un punto di vista numerico la quinta o sesta forza elettorale, di darle qualche suggerimento.
Thus, allow me, also for the people that are following me, that by now from a numerical viewpoint, are the fifth or the sixth electoral force, to give you a few suggestions.

Il primo è di rispettare la volontà popolare, che essa si esprima per l’abbandono del nucleare, per l’acqua pubblica o per evitare l’inutile distruzione della val di Susa.
The first is to respect the will of the people that expresses the wish to abandon nuclear, for public water or to avoid the useless destruction of the Val di Susa.

Il secondo è di dare subito degli esempi sul taglio dei costi inutili prima di qualunque tassa sulla prima casa, della patrimoniale o dell’aumento dell’Iva.
The second is straight away to give examples of cuts to useless costs before any tax on the first home, on the patrimony, or increase in sales tax.

Il popolo italiano ha le tasse più alte d’Europa e, allo stesso tempo, un’enorme evasione.
The Italian people have the highest taxes in Europe and at the same time, enormous tax evasion.

Significa che pagano sempre gli stessi, è probabile che solo su di loro graverà il cosiddetto “risanamento”.
It means that it’s always the same people that pay and it’s possible that only on their shoulders will fall the burden of the so-called “risanamento” {recovery}.

Lei è due volte fortunato, la prima ragione, come ho già scritto, è che succede a uno sciagurato. La seconda è che ha grandi margini di manovra.
You are lucky in two ways. The first, as I have written, is that you are following on from a wretch. The second is that you have wide margins for manoeuvring.

Ovunque giri lo sguardo può operare risparmi e tagli a costo zero.
Wherever you glance you could operate savings and cuts at zero cost.

Tagli le province, i finanziamenti elettorali, i contributi pubblici all’editoria.
Cut the provinces, the electoral financing, the public financing of publishing.

Fermi le grandi opere inutili come la Tav, la Gronda di Genova, l’Expo di Milano.
Put a stop to the great useless public works like the TAV, “la Gronda” in Genoa, the Expo in Milan.

Sa meglio di me che non servono a nulla.
You know better than I do that they are of no use.

L’economia non si sviluppa con il cemento.
The economy is not developed with cement.

Riporti le concessioni autostradali sotto la gestione statale, è corretto che, se c’è un guadagno di miliardi di euro, rimanga allo Stato, non sia destinato a Benetton e soci.
Bring back the motorway concessions under state management, it is right that if there is a gain of billions of euro, that it remains with the State and that it is not destined for Benetton and associates.

Lei ha studiato dai gesuiti, ma, rimanendo in tema di ordini religiosi, dovrebbe rifarsi ai francescani.
You studied with the Jesuits, but, staying on the topic of religious orders, you should renew yourself along the lines of the Franciscans.

Spogliarsi dalle sue relazioni con il mondo che lo ha nominato e rivolgersi direttamente agli italiani.
Peel off your relations with the world that appointed you and turn directly to the Italian people.

Se non può farlo, le consiglio di lasciare l’incarico.
If you cannot do that, I advise you to leave the position.

Ripetere gli stessi errori e nefandezze dei politici che l’hanno preceduta non le farebbe onore.
To repeat the same errors and the vileness of the politicians that preceded you would not do you honour.

Le chiedo un incontro per illustrarle il programma del M5S.
I’m asking for a meeting so that I can tell you about the M5S programme.
