Health : Commission announces winners of the 3rd EU Prize for Journalists
Salute: la Commissione annuncia i vincitori del 3° premio europeo di giornalismo
Brussels, 1 February 2012 – Last night, four prizes were awarded to European journalists for the best articles on health issues, selected from nearly 500 submitted by journalists from all 27 Member States.
Bruxelles, 1° febbraio 2012 – Ieri sera sono stati consegnati quattro premi ad altrettanti giornalisti europei per i migliori articoli su tematiche sanitarie scelti tra i circa 500 presentati da giornalisti di tutti i 27 Stati membri.

Gli articoli vincitori riguardavano:
– antimicrobial resistance,
– la resistenza agli antimicrobici,
– the importance of exercise in helping tackle depression,
– l’importanza dell’esercizio fisico nel contribuire a combattere la depressione,
– breast cancer, and
– il tumore al seno e
– the harmful effects of smoking.
– gli effetti nocivi del fumo.
The prizes were awarded in the context of the 2011 EU Health Prize for Journalists, which aims to showcase and reward the work of journalists from across the European Union that raise awareness on important health issues that affect the lives of all EU citizens.
I premi sono stati consegnati nel quadro del Premio europeo per il giornalismo sulla salute 2011, che mira a pubblicizzare e a conferire un riconoscimento al lavoro dei giornalisti dell’Unione europea che sensibilizzano i cittadini dell’UE su questioni sanitarie importanti che riguardano la loro vita.
The main theme of the prize was the ‘Europe for Patients’ campaign, which comprises a wide range of healthcare and patient safety-related topics.
L’argomento principale di questa edizione del Premio è stata la campagna “L’Europa per i pazienti”, che comprende un’ampia gamma di temi connessi all’assistenza sanitaria e alla sicurezza dei pazienti.
>>> In addition, this year’s competition included a special prize for articles on smoking cessation, to support awareness about what smoking means and does to people’s health.
Inoltre, l’edizione di quest’anno includeva un premio speciale per gli articoli sulla disassuefazione dal fumo, per contribuire a sensibilizzare i cittadini sulle implicazioni del fumo e sui danni per la salute provocati dal tabagismo.

Two journalists from the United Kingdom, Ben Hirschler and Kate Kelland, won 1st prize for their article on antimicrobial resistance.
Due giornalisti del Regno Unito, Ben Hirschler e Kate Kelland, si sono aggiudicati il 1° premio per il loro articolo sulla resistenza agli antimicrobici.
“When the drugs don’t work”, published by Reuters, puts the spotlight on the emerging healthcare disaster of “super-bugs” – a subject where there is lack of awareness, even amongst healthcare professionals.
“When the drugs don’t work” (Quando i medicinali non funzionano), pubblicato da Reuters, punta i riflettori sul disastro sanitario emergente dei “super batteri”, un argomento sul quale vi è un deficit di sensibilizzazione, anche tra gli stessi operatori sanitari.
The 2nd prize was awarded to Rita Makarész from Hungary for her article “The cheapest antidepressant”. This article, published on the health portal www.orvostkeresek.hu, highlights the benefits of exercise as a means to prevent depression.
Il 2° premio se lo è aggiudicato Rita Makarész, ungherese, per l’articolo “The cheapest antidepressant” (L’antidepressivo più economico), pubblicato sul portale dedicato alla sanità www.orvostkeresek.hu, che sottolinea i benefici dell’esercizio fisico quale mezzo di prevenzione della depressione.
The 3rd prize went to Mateja Grošeljj, from Slovenia for her article “From Lojze to Ludvika”, published in the Vecer Weekly newspaper.
Il 3° premio è stato assegnato a Mateja Grošelj, slovena, per il suo articolo “From Lojze to Ludvika” (Da Lojze a Ludvika), pubblicato sul settimanale Vecer Weekly.
This article on the most frequent cancer amongst women – breast cancer – explores the subject from the angle of a woman undergoing a pioneering breast reconstruction operation.
Questo articolo sul cancro più diffuso tra le donne – il carcinoma mammario – affronta l’argomento dal punto di vista di una donna che si sottopone ad un’operazione pioneristica di ricostruzione mammaria.

Monika Cetera from Poland won the special prize for her web article “I’ve come here to have my teeth treated, not to quit smoking” which details an unpleasant but lesser known harmful effect of smoking – poor oral health.
Monika Cetera, polacca, si è aggiudicata il premio speciale per l’articolo pubblicato sul web “I’ve come here to have my teeth treated, not to quit smoking” (Sono venuta qui per farmi curare i denti, non per smettere di fumare), che descrive un effetto nocivo spiacevole, ma meno noto del fumo – la cattiva salute orale.
The article also illustrates the financial costs associated with smoking.

This is the third edition of the EU Health Prize for Journalists, an initiative funded by the EU Health Programme.

The selection of the winners was a two-step process.
La scelta dei vincitori è avvenuta in due fasi.
National juries selected a national finalist and a finalist from the special category smoking cessation.
Le giurie nazionali hanno scelto un finalista nazionale e un finalista per la categoria speciale “Disassuefazione dal fumo”.
The EU jury, composed of European Commission officials, public heath experts and journalists then convened in Brussels to decide on the 4 winning articles.
La giuria dell’UE, formata da funzionari della Commissione europea, da esperti di sanità pubblica e da giornalisti, si è quindi riunita a Bruxelles per scegliere i quattro articoli vincitori.
All finalists were invited to Brussels to attend a Media Seminar and Award Ceremony.
