Today’s verdict of the International Criminal Court in the case of Mr. Lubanga Dyilo constitutes a milestone for international criminal justice.
Il verdetto odierno della Corte penale internazionale nel processo a Lubanga Dyilo rappresenta una pietra miliare per la giustizia penale internazionale.

It is the first verdict of the Court, which started its operations in 2003.
È il primo verdetto della Corte, che ha iniziato ad operare nel 2003.

This judgment constitutes a significant achievement for the Court in its task of ensuring respect for, and enforcement of, international justice. At the same time, this verdict offers an opportunity for the International Criminal Court to reflect on the proceedings and analyze lessons learnt.
Questo verdetto costituisce un risultato importante per la Corte penale internazionale nel suo compito di assicurare il rispetto e l’applicazione della giustizia internazionale e, nel contempo, offre alla Corte un’opportunità per riflettere sul procedimento e analizzare l’esperienza maturata.

It resonates far beyond the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as the trial of Mr. Lubanga has raised awareness about the plight of child soldiers and the fact that recruiting and using children under 15 in combat is a war crime.
La sua risonanza va ben oltre la Repubblica democratica del Congo, dato che il processo a Lubanga ha spinto a prendere coscienza della situazione drammatica dei bambini soldato e del fatto che il reclutamento e l’impiego di bambini di età inferiore a 15 anni nei conflitti armati costituisce un crimine di guerra.

It is to be underlined that the International Criminal Court is a fully independent judicial institution and that providing for a fair trial is at its core.
Va sottolineato che la Corte penale internazionale è un’istituzione giudiziaria pienamente indipendente il cui scopo essenziale è assicurare un processo equo.

In July this year, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of Court’s founding treaty, the Rome Statute.
Nel luglio di quest’anno celebreremo il decimo anniversario dell’entrata in vigore del trattato costitutivo della Corte, lo Statuto di Roma.

The European Union has been a strong supporter of the International Criminal Court since the adoption of its founding Treaty in 1998.
