Il nome di Piero Calamandrei, forse, non dirà molto agli studenti che protestano contro settantenni incartapecoriti che gli hanno rubato il presente e gli vogliono togliere la speranza di un futuro.
The name of Piero Calamandrei, perhaps will not mean much to the students who are protesting against the seventy year old decrepit people who have stolen their”here and now” from them and are wanting to take the hope of a future as well.

Il suo nome, forse, non avrà significato per i ragazzi e le ragazze che vedono al vertice delle istituzioni, dell’economia, dell’informazione del loro Paese dei pregiudicati, dei servi, dei lacchè.
His name, perhaps, will not have meaning for the young lads and lasses who are seeing the top brass in the institutions, in the world of the economy, of journalism in their country who are people with previous convictions, servants and lackeys.

Calamandrei, forse, non dirà nulla alla nostra gioventù che vede la Costituzione tradita dal Parlamento, migliaia di caduti sul lavoro ogni anno, milioni di precari e il padre, o la madre, licenziati.
Calamandrei perhaps means nothing to our youth who see the Constitution betrayed by Parliament, thousands of those who have died at work each year, millions of precarious workers and their father, or perhaps their mother, sacked.

Calamandrei was a professor during fascism, one of the few who had never asked for the party ticket. He founded the Action Party and he was a member of the Constitutional Court.

Nel 1950 fece un discorso sulla Scuola, parole che sembrano dette oggi per la Scuola della P2.
In 1950 he delivered a speech about school, words that seem to have been said today about the School of the P2.

L’ipotesi di Calamandrei.
Calamandrei’s hypothesis

“Facciamo l’ipotesi, così astrattamente, che ci sia un partito al potere, un partito dominante, il quale però formalmente vuole rispettare la Costituzione, non la vuole violare in sostanza.
“Let’s put forward the hypothesis, just as in the abstract, that there is a party in power, a dominant party, which, however, formally wants to respect the Constitution, and doesn’t want to violate it, in fact.

Non vuole fare la marcia su Roma e trasformare l’aula in alloggiamento per i manipoli; ma vuol istituire, senza parere, una larvata dittatura.
It doesn’t want to do the March on Rome and transform the Chamber into lodgings for groups of men; but wants to set up, without appearing to, a veiled dictatorship.

Allora, che cosa fare per impadronirsi delle scuole e per trasformare le scuole di Stato in scuole di partito?
So, what’s to be done to take over the schools and to transform the State schools into Party schools?

Si accorge che le scuole di Stato hanno difetto di essere imparziali.
It notices that the State schools have the defect of being impartial.

C’è una certa resistenza; in quelle scuole c’è sempre, perfino sotto il fascismo c’è stata.
There is a certain resistance; in those schools there always has been, even underneath fascism it has been there.

Allora il partito dominante segue un’altra strada (è tutta un’ipotesi teorica,intendiamoci).
So the dominant party follows another path (it is all a theoretical hypothesis, let’s be clear).

Comincia a trascurare le scuole pubbliche, a screditarle, ad impoverirle.
It starts to not take care of the State schools, to discredit them, to make them poor.

Lascia che si anemizzino e comincia a favorire le scuole private. Non tutte le scuole private. Le scuole del suo partito, di quel partito.
It lets them lose blood and it starts to favour the private schools. The schools of the party, of its party.

Ed allora tutte le cure cominciano ad andare a queste scuole private.
So all the care starts to go to these private schools.

Cure di denaro e di privilegi.
Care in terms of money and privileges.

Si comincia persino a consigliare i ragazzi ad andare a queste scuole, perché in fondo sono migliori si dice di quelle di Stato.
They even start to advise the youngsters to go to these schools, because they say, basically they are better than the State ones.

E magari si danno dei premi,come ora vi dirò, o si propone di dare dei premi a quei cittadini che saranno disposti a mandare i loro figlioli invece che alle scuole pubbliche alle scuole private.
And perhaps they give rewards, as now I will tell you, or they propose giving rewards to those citizens who are disposed to send their offspring to the private schools rather than the State schools.

A “quelle” scuole private.
To “those” private schools.

Gli esami sono più facili,si studia meno e si riesce meglio.
The exams are easier, there’s less to study and the success is better.

Così la scuola privata diventa una scuola privilegiata.
So the private school becomes a privileged school.

Il partito dominante, non potendo trasformare apertamente le scuole di Stato in scuole di partito, manda in malora le scuole di Stato per dare prevalenza alle scuole private.
The dominant party, not being able to openly transform the State schools into private schools, lets the State schools go to rack and ruin to give the advantage to the private schools.

Attenzione, amici, in questo convegno questo è il punto che bisogna discutere.
Take care, friends, in this conference, this is the point that needs to be discussed.

Attenzione, questa è la ricetta.
Take care, this is the recipe.

Bisogna tener d’occhio i cuochi di questa bassa cucina.
We need to keep an eye on the cooks of this base kitchen.

L’operazione si fa in tre modi: ve l’ho già detto:
The operation is done in three ways: as I have already told you:

rovinare le scuole di Stato.
ruin the State schools.

Lasciare che vadano in malora.
Let them collapse.

Impoverire i loro bilanci.
Make their balance sheets impoverished.

Ignorare i loro bisogni.
Ignore their needs.

Attenuare la sorveglianza e il controllo sulle scuole private.
Relax the supervision and the controls on the private schools.

Non controllarne la serietà.
Don’t check up on how serious they are.

Lasciare che vi insegnino insegnanti che non hanno i titoli minimi per insegnare.
Allow them to have teachers without the minimum requirements for teaching.

Lasciare che gli esami siano burlette.
Allow the exams to be ridiculous.

Dare alle scuole private denaro pubblico.
Give public money to the private schools.

Questo è il punto.
