Galileo September launch will spur innovation
Il lancio di Galileo in settembre stimolerà l’innovazione
Brussels, 2 May 2012 – Galileo’s second launch of 2 satellites is confirmed for 28th September 2012.
Bruxelles, 2 maggio 2012 – Confermato per il 28 settembre 2012 il secondo lancio di 2 satelliti del programma Galileo.
The resulting 4-satellite mini-constellation will enable testing of the functioning of the vast Galileo infrastructure.
La mini costellazione di 4 satelliti permetterà di sperimentare il funzionamento della grande infrastruttura di Galileo.
This also means that European enterprises can start to develop and test innovative products based on the Galileo satellite navigation signals.
Ciò significa anche che le imprese europee possano iniziare a sviluppare e a collaudare prodotti innovativi basati sui segnali di navigazione via satellite di Galileo.
Today’s announcement by European Commission Vice President Antonio Tajani together with Jean Yves Le Gall, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace, in the presence of industry CEOs involved in the programme, was reached in agreement with the European Space Agency.

The launch date was set in agreement with the European Space Agency which implements the programme on behalf of the European Commission.

All four IOV (In-Orbit Validation) satellites were produced by EADS Astrium.

Galileo will allow users to know their exact position in time and space, just like GPS, but with greater precision and reliability.

Under European civilian control, Galileo will be compatible and, for some of its services, interoperable with the American GPS, but independent from it.

The in-orbit validation (IOV) phase consists of the deployment tests and the operation of four satellites and their related ground infrastructure.
La fase di convalida in orbita (In Orbit Validation – IOV) consiste nei test di dispiegamento e nell’entrata in funzione di 4 satelliti e delle relative infrastrutture terrestri.
This phase is on-going.
È la fase attualmente in corso.
The full operational capability (FOC) phase consists of the deployment of the remaining ground and space infrastructure.
La fase di piena capacità operativa (full operational capability – FOC) consiste nel dispiegamento delle restanti infrastrutture a terra e nello spazio.
It includes an initial operational capability phase of 18 operational satellites.
Essa prevede una capacità operativa iniziale da parte di 18 satelliti.
The full system will consist of 30 satellites in orbit, as well as 2 satellites on the ground to replace those in orbit if necessary, and include control centres located in Europe and a network of sensor stations and uplink stations installed around the globe.

The procurement of services essential for Galileo’s full operational capability is divided into six contracts.
L’appalto dei servizi necessari a garantire la piena capacità operativa di Galileo è suddiviso in 6 contratti.
In January 2010, three contracts were awarded to Thales Alenia Space (IT), OHB System AG (DE) and Arianespace to ensure, respectively, system engineering support, the provision of 14 satellites and the launch services (IP/10/7).
Nel gennaio 2010, sono stati aggiudicati, a Thales Alenia Space (IT), OHB System AG (DE) e Arianespace, 3 contratti al fine di prestare, rispettivamente, servizi di supporto per l’ingegneria di sistema, per la fornitura di 14 satelliti e per il loro lancio (IP/10/7).
A fourth contract was signed in Brussels in October 2010 with SpaceOpal for operating the space and ground infrastructure (IP/10/1382).
Nell’ottobre 2010, a Bruxelles con SpaceOpal è stato firmato il 4°contratto, relativo alla gestione delle infrastrutture terrestri e spaziali (IP/10/1382).
In June 2011 (IP/11/772) the final two remaining contracts were signed with Thales Alenia Space (FR) for the ground mission infrastructure and Astrium (UK) for the ground control infrastructure.
Nel giugno 2011 (IP/11/772), sono stati firmati i restanti 2 contratti, con Thales Alenia Space (FR), per l’infrastruttura di missione a terra, e con Astrium (Regno Unito), per l’infrastruttura di controllo a terra.
In February 2012 (IP/12/95) a further 8 satellites were ordered from OHB (to add to the 18 satellites already ordered).
Nel febbraio 2012 (IP/12/95), sono stati ordinati presso OHB altri 8 satelliti (da aggiungere ai 18 già ordinati).
Of these 18 satellites, 2 are already in orbit since 21st October 2011 and are performing well.
Di questi 18 satelliti, 2 sono già in orbita dal 21 ottobre 2011 e stanno dando buoni risultati.
A contract booking launches with Arianespace was signed at the same time.
Contemporaneamente, è stato firmato con Arianespace un contratto che ne prenota i lanci.
A third contract for the adaptation of the Ariane 5 launcher, enabling it to carry 4 Galileo satellites per launch was signed with Astrium SAS (FR) thereby accelerating the deployment of the constellation and bringing to 26 the number of satellites in orbit by end 2015.
È stato infine firmato un terzo contratto con Astrium SAS (FR) per aggiornare il vettore Ariane 5 e metterlo in grado di trasportare 4 satelliti Galileo per lancio; portando a 26 il numero di satelliti Galileo in orbita entro la fine del 2015 si accelera così il dispiegamento della costellazione.
