The anti-political man
Il signor Q (è un nome di fantasia) ha perso il posto di lavoro.
Mr Q (a fictitious name) has lost his job.
Il figlio è da sempre disoccupato.
His son has always been unemployed.
Gli è stata recapitata una cartella di Equitalia di 10.000 euro su cui sta indagando un commercialista che gli fa credito.
He’s received a payment demand from Equitalia for the sum of 10,000 euro and an accountant is looking into it and hasn’t yet asked for payment for his services.
La moglie ha bisogno di costosi medicinali a pagamento.
His wife needs costly medicines that have to be paid for.
Non riesce a onorare le scadenze del mutuo e dovrà lasciare il suo appartamento.
He can’t keep up the mortgage payments and he’ll have to move out of his apartment.
Le bollette dell’acqua, del gas, della spazzatura, dell’energia elettrica sono mazzate che non prova neppure più a schivare.
The utility bills for water, gas, rubbish collection and electricity are heavy blows that he no longer tries to avoid.
Gli arrivano ogni mese in piena faccia e le paga quando può insieme alla mora.
They arrive in his face every month and he pays them when he can together with the excess for late payment.

His daughter was close to being raped and they’ve had a burglary in the house.
La porta blindata la sta pagando a rate.
He’s paying for the reinforced door in instalments.

At weekends he’s always escaping from pollution.
L’aumento della benzina gli consente però solo un’autonomia di 50 km (andata e ritorno) per uscire dalla città.
However, the increase in the petrol price only allows him to travel 50 km (there and back) to get out of the city.
Deve tornare indietro quando la spia della benzina diventa rosso incandescente.
He has to turn back when the fuel indicator turns fiery red.
Il nonno si è spento da poco insieme alla sua pensione che contribuiva alla spesa settimanale alla Lidl, lasciando così la famiglia nella disperazione.
Grandpa died recently, and so did his pension that made a contribution to the weekly shopping at Lidl, thus leaving the family in a desperate state.
Il signor Q è un antipolitico viscerale, da sempre.
Mr Q has always been viscerally anti-political.
“La politica è sporca (per questo lui se ne lava le mani)”.
“Politics is dirty (this is why he washes his hands of the matter).”
“La politica la fanno i politici”.
Politics is what’s done by politicians.”
“Io ho altro da fare che occuparmi di politica”.
“I’ve got other things to do rather than spend my time on politics.
“C’è chi lavora e chi fa politica e io lavoro”.
“There are those who work and those who do politics and I work.
Il signor Q (quanti milioni di signor Q dormono da sempre sonni beati in Italia?) detesta la politica.
Mr Q (how many millions of Mr Qs are there in Italy that always have sweet dreams at night ?) detests politics.
Ma se lui non si occupa di politica, è la politica che si occupa di lui.
But if he doesn’t spend his time doing politics, it’s politics that deals with him.
Lo spolpa vivo.
It skins him alive.
Gli toglie i diritti civili, la libertà di informazione, il diritto alla salute, la casa, il lavoro, la sicurezza, un futuro per i suoi figli.
It takes his civil rights away from him. It takes away the freedom of information, the right to health care, to a home, to work, to have safety and to have a future for his son.
L’antipolitica del signor Q ha le sue radici profonde nel distacco tra cittadino e Stato, tra un mondo ideale, e inesistente, dove si coltivano i propri interessi privati, e il mondo “là fuori” che non busserà mai alla tua porta.
Mr Q’s anti-political stance has its deep roots in the gap between the citizen and the State, between an ideal and non-existent world in which one’s own interests are cultivated, and the world “out there” that will never knock on your door.
Ognuno vale uno, ma chi non partecipa vale zero.
Each person is worth one, but each person who is not participating, is worth zero.
