The Rhinoceros

I tre dell’Ave Maria, o meglio dell’Estrema Unzione, sono stati chiamati a rapporto, come dei chierichetti, da Rigor Montis che ha preteso “un mandato forte” per trattare con l’Europa.
The three people of “Ave Maria” or rather of “Extreme Unction”, have been called to account like little altar boys. They’ve been called by Rigor Montis who is insisting on “a strong mandate” for negotiations with Europe.

Lo ha chiesto a degli ectoplasmi, evocati durante un conciliabolo i cui contenuti sono stati tenuti nascosti a un Paese che assiste attonito all’avvenuta privatizzazione dello Stato.
He has asked this of ectoplasms evoked during a secret meeting that has been kept hidden from a country that is astonished while witnessing the privatisation of the State.

Tre partiti in via di disfacimento, che forse scompariranno dopo le prossime elezioni, hanno discusso del nostro futuro con un signore che nessuno ha eletto.
Three parties on their way into decline, that will perhaps disappear after the forthcoming elections, have discussed our future with a gentleman that no one elected.

Sembra una commedia dell’assurdo di Eugène Ionesco, dove i rinoceronti scorrazzano indisturbati nelle strade tra l’indifferenza delle Istituzioni che sorseggiano il tè e commentano annoiate. “Casini, una fettina di limone?” “Monti, uno o due cucchiaini di zucchero? Di canna?”  “Alfano, una goccia di latte?” “Bersani, cos’è questo rumore di zoccoli a passo di carica? Le primarie?”
It seems like Eugène Ionesco’s Theatre of the Absurd, where the rhinos run around undisturbed on the streets to the indifference of the institutions who sip tea and make bored comments like :”Casini, would you like a slice of lemon? or “Monti, one or two sugars? Cane sugar?”  “Alfano, a drop of milk?” “Bersani, what is this noise of hooves charging along? The primaries?”

I rinoceronti aumentano e disturbano la morbida e discreta conversazione.
The noise of rhinos increases and disturbs the low-key conversation.

The spread is out of control as is unemployment.

Il Pil è negativo.
The GDP is negative.

Gli introiti fiscali, come è naturale, diminuiscono
Naturally tax revenue is going down.

Le aziende chiudono o fuggono.
Companies are closing or fleeing.

E il debito pubblico, insieme agli interessi, aumenta.
The public debt is increasing as are interest rates.

Tutto nella norma.
Everything is within normal parameters.

Frasi già dette e sentite più volte da sembrare ormai scontate come quelle sul tempo.
Phrases that have already been said and heard many times to such an extent that they are taken for granted like phrases about the weather.

La tenuta dell’euro è in discussione.
The endurance of the euro is under discussion.

Non lo dice solo Grillo.
It’s not just Grillo that says so.

Soros gli dà tre mesi.
Soros is giving it three months.

Christine Lagarde, presidente dell’FMI, anche meno.
Christine Lagarde, Head of the IMF, is giving it even less.

Io ero leggermente più ottimista.
I was slightly optimistic.

Non sono contro l’euro in principio, ma credo che bisogna disporre per tempo di un piano in caso di uscita.
I’m not against the euro in principle, but I believe that an exit plan has to be worked out in time, just in case it’s needed.

Nessuno ne vuole parlare, l’euro è un tabù.
No one wants to talk about it. The euro is taboo.

Il Governo non ci spiega costi e benefici di euro-si o euro-no.
The Government is not explaining to us the benefits of saying “yes” to the euro or of saying “no”.

Il valore di una moneta riflette il valore dell’economia di un Paese.
The value of a currency reflects the value of a country’s economy.

E’ evidente che l’economia tedesca sovrasta quella italiana.
It’s evident that the German economy towers above the Italian economy.

I tedeschi si ritrovano con una moneta debole con grande beneficio per le esportazioni e l’Italia, insieme ai PIGS, sempre più numerosi, con una moneta forte che li strozza giorno dopo giorno.
The Germans find themselves with a weak currency that greatly benefits exports. Italy, together with the PIGS that are getting ever more numerous, has a strong currency that is throttling it day by day.

La Germania attira i capitali europei come una calamita.
Germany is attracting European capital like a magnet.

Si vendono i titoli pubblici dei Pigs per comprare bund.
The State bonds of the PIGS are being sold in order to buy Bunds.

Si spostano miliardi di euro nelle banche tedesche dai Paesi a rischio.
Billions of euro are being shifted from at-risk countries into the German banks.

In questo caos si prestano 100 miliardi di euro alle banche spagnole per evitarne il fallimento.
In this chaos, 100 billion euro are being lent to the Spanish banks so they don’t go bust.

In realtà prestiamo debiti creati con nuovi titoli pubblici.
In reality we are lending debts created with new public bonds.

In termini economici cosa significa prestare un debito?
In economic terms, what does it mean to lend a debt?

Qualcuno sano di mente lo può spiegare?
Is there a sane person who can explain it?

Siamo nell’iperspazio della ragione.
We are in the hyper-space of reason.

La UE è fuori controllo e l’euro una cassa di dinamite con la miccia sempre più corta.
The EU is out of control and the euro is a box of dynamite with a fuse that is getting ever shorter.

E noi ci siamo seduti sopra.
And we are sitting on top of it.

Fuori, intanto, i rinoceronti si moltiplicano.
Meanwhile, outside, the rhinos are multiplying.
