The owner of the small and medium sized enterprise, man of the year

Un po’ martire, un po’ eroe, testardo, cocciuto, indipendente, orgoglioso.
A bit of a martyr, a bit of a hero, stubborn, pig-headed, independent, proud.

Qualche volta suicida.
Sometimes suicidal.

Talvolta in fuga oltreconfine, in Svizzera o in Carinzia, per salvare la sua azienda e i suoi dipendenti.
Sometimes fleeing abroad, to Switzerland, to Carinthia in Austria, to save the company and its employees.

In mezzo a operai e impiegati, come uno di loro.
Mingling with labourers and office workers, he’s one of them.

Un San Sebastiano moderno trafitto dalle tasse più alte dell’Occidente, da Equitalia, da adempimenti burocratici kafkiani.
He’s a modern day Saint Sebastian, tormented by the highest taxes in the West, by the tax collecting agency, Equitalia, by Kafkaesque bureaucratic requirements.

In credito verso lo Stato che però pretende l’anticipo sui presunti profitti.
In credit in relation to the State that is however insisting on payment in advance on the basis of presumed profits.

Tassato anche in perdita con l’Irap.
With IRAP {regional tax on production} he’s even taxed if he’s making a loss.

Schifato dalle banche.
Loathed by the banks.

Mulo da soma che lavora per lo Stato fino ad agosto e solo nei mesi successivi per se e per la sua famiglia.
He’s a workhorse working for the State up until August and in the months after that he’s working for himself and his family.

Uno Stato vorace, allo stesso tempo post sovietico e ultra capitalista, che assorbe le sue energie come una sanguisuga.
A greedy State, that is at one and the same time post-Soviet and ultra-capitalist, that absorbs his energy like a bloodsucker.

Questo tipo d’uomo che crede nel futuro in mezzo a una realtà che assomiglia a un incubo quotidiano, e lo fa con ostinazione incomprensibile quando gli altri hanno già gettato la spugna, vive solo nel nostro Paese.
This type of man who is believing in a future in the midst of a reality that is like a daily nightmare, and he’s doing this with unbelievable obstinacy when the others have already thrown in the sponge, he is living an isolated life in this country.

E’ una specie in via di estinzione, sopportata da una sinistra da sempre aggrappata alle mammelle dei concessionari, degli appalti di Stato e delle cooperative,e tradita da una destra spesso corruttrice e mafiosa, amica e foraggiatrice dei grandi imprenditori con leggi e casse integrazioni ad hoc.
He’s an endangered species, supported by left wing parties that have always been clinging on to the udders of the concessionaries, of the State contracts and of the cooperatives, betrayed by the right wing that is often corrupting and mafia-like, a friend and provider of fodder for the big enterprises with ad hoc laws and funds for laid off workers.

Difficile che si arrenda e quando lo fa, con una corda al collo o con un colpo di pistola nel suo ufficio, non è un atto di resa, ma di protesta.
It’s difficult for him to give up and when he does, with a rope round his neck or a single pistol shot in his office, it’s not an action of surrender but of protest.

Butta la sua vita in faccia a chi non ha mai lavorato, rischiato, scommesso sui propri sogni pagando le sue scelte sempre in prima persona.
He throws his own life into the face of the ones who have never worked, taken risks, taken bets on their own dreams paying for their choices with their own body.

Senza aiuti e orgoglioso di non dover chiedere.
Without assistance and proud of not having to ask for it.

E’ un combattente che sembra votato al martirio, ma che combatte per tutti, anche per i suoi avversari.
He’s a fighter who seems to have been voted a martyr, but one who is fighting for everyone, even his adversaries.

Senza di lui il Paese si spegnerà come una candela.
Without him, the country would be blown out like a candle.

Senza il tessuto delle piccole e medie imprese ci rimarranno le banche senza depositi, i dipendenti pubblici senza stipendio e i pensionati senza pensione.
Without the network of small and medium sized companies we’d just have the banks without deposits, the public employees without salaries and the pensioners without pensions.

Un deserto di cui ci sono già segnali ignorati dai parassiti della Nazione.
A desert of which we already have signals that are ignored by the parasites of the Nation.

Gente che non si è mai sporcata le mani in una fabbrica o ha passato le notti in bianco per far quadrare i conti.
People that have never got their hands dirty in a factory or who have never spent sleepless nights trying to get their accounts to balance.

Il piccolo e medio imprenditore è il cuore che tiene in vita questo corpo devastato che si chiama Italia.
The owner of the small and medium sized enterprise is the heart that keeps alive this devastated body that is called Italy.

Se dovesse stancarsi nessuno potrà biasimarlo.
If he were to get tired, no one could blame him.
