Arrigo Petacco – Buongiorno cari amici, io sono Arrigo Petacco e sono stato invitato a parlare, per il vostro blog, di un caso molto clamoroso, anche se è   un po’ vecchio: il caso Matteotti e vi dico la mia opinione.
Arrigo Petacco – Good Day dear friends, I’m Arrigo Petacco and I was invited to come and speak on your blog about a very controversial case, even though it’s somewhat old, namely the Matteotti case and I’ll tell you what I think.

Blog – Un momento di svolta del fascismo fu il delitto Matteotti del 1924 dopo il quale fu, in modo aperto, istituita la dittatura, ma Il Duce affermò di essere totalmente estraneo al delitto Matteotti e che i mandanti del delitto andavano ricercati presso certi putridi ambienti finanziari e capitalisti, sui quali era in corso una indagine riservata;
Blog – The Matteotti murder of 1924 was a turning point for fascism because it was after this that the dictatorship was openly implemented, however, “Il Duce” claimed that he had nothing to do with Matteotti’s murder and that the people behind the murder should be sought in certain putrid financial and capitalist circles, into which a secret investigation was already in progress;

Lei pensa che Mussolini sia stato veramente estraneo al delitto?
Do you think that Mussolini really had nothing to do with the crime?

Arrigo Petacco – Ne sono certissimo, quel delitto è molto strano, anche se poi ci hanno versato sopra valanghe di propaganda e di bugie, etc.
Arrigo Petacco – I am absolutely certain of that. That crime was very strange, even though they then heaped loads of propaganda, lies, etc onto it.

>>> È un delitto stranissimo perché io, che oltre lo storico ho fatto anche il giornalista di cronaca nera, ho seguito il fatto come è accaduto veramente, senza tutto il ciarpame che ci hanno fatto sopra.
It was a very strange crime because I who, having been a crime reporter as well as a historian, followed the case as it actually happened, without all the rubbish that went on around it.

Il fatto è questo, un pomeriggio di Domenica, Matteotti passeggia del lungo Tevere arriva una macchina, una Lancia Lamda con tanto di targa che il portiere si affretta anche a registrare;
The fact is that, on a Sunday afternoon, Matteotti was walking along the banks of the Tiber River when a motor car drove by, a Lancia Lamda even bearing number plates from which the doorman took down the registration number.

scendono giù 4 manigoldi, squadristi e lo caricano in macchina;
Four executioners, members of the Action Squad jumped out and loaded Matteotti into the vehicle.

non gli sparano, non lo ammazzano, lo caricano in macchina;
They didn’t shoot him or kill him there, they simply loaded him into the vehicle.

evidentemente è solo un rapimento, solo che durante il tragitto in macchina, il Matteotti cacciato addirittura a forza sotto il seggiolino posteriore della macchina, scalcia, era un uomo forte robusto e coraggioso, scalcia, smadonna, addirittura morde i polpacci di quelli che gli stanno seduti sopra;
It was apparently just a kidnapping, except that during the car trip Matteotti, who was a strong man and had been forcibly pushed under the rear seat, began kicking, cursing and even biting the calves of the men seated above him.

alla fine uno dei 4 con una mano trova sotto il lunotto posteriore una lima arrugginita e con quella colpisce alla testa Matteotti e lo uccide.
In the end, one of the four men found a rusty file under the rear window and hit Matteotti on the head with it, killing him.

Mussolini nel 24 ha ottenuto il 68,8% dei voti vi rendete conto?
Were you aware that in 1924 Mussolini garnered 68.8% of the vote?

Altro che violenza e che minaccia!
Never mind the violence, talk about a threat!

E i socialisti, il povero Matteotti era al 18-20 %.
And the socialists, poor old Matteotti, only got 18-20%.

A questo punto la domanda che faccio io è: voi pensate che, 10 giorni prima che aveva stravinto le elezioni politiche, il capo del governo, non ancora dittatore, per fare uccidere il capo dell’opposizione manda 4 manigoldi con una lima arrugginita?
At this point I ask the question: do you honestly believe that, just ten days before he would go on to win the general elections by a country mile, the head of the government, who was not yet the dictator that we all know, would send out four executioners with a rusty file to kill the leader of the opposition?

Ecco, io proprio per questo non ho mai creduto che Mussolini avesse fatto il delitto.

Blog – Nel libro “La storia ci ha mentito” lei fa riferimento a testimonianze di Edda Ciano, figlia di Mussolini, che farebbero pensare alla volontà del Duce di un riavvicinamento al Partito socialista di allora per un governo di pacificazione nazionale, è una tesi plausibile?
Blog – In the book entitled ““La storia ci ha mentito”” (literally “History lied to us”) you refer to statements made by Mussolini’s daughter, Edda Ciano, which would lead us to think that “Il Duce” actually wanted to develop closer bonds with the then Socialist Party in order to create a government of national reconciliation. Is this a plausible theory?

Arrigo Petacco – Non c’è dubbio, ma anche lo stesso De Felice lo riconosce, solo che c’è stata tutta questa retorica antifascista che ha confuso le idee a tutti.
Arrigo Petacco – There’s no doubt at all and even De Felice himself acknowledges this, except that there was all that anti-fascist rhetoric that confused everyone’s ideas.

Mussolini in quel periodo lì voleva agganciare la parte morbida del socialismo, in molti erano già d’accordo con lui a entrare nel governo, solo che la lotta era tra gli estremisti fascisti e gli estremisti socialisti.
At that time, Mussolini wanted to woo the Socialist Party moderates, and many of them had already agreed with him to join the government, except that the real battle was between the fascist extremists and the socialist extremists.

E sono i due estremisti che cercavano di staccare Mussolini dalla sinistra.
It was these extremists on both sides who were trying to draw Mussolini away from the left wing.

A destra avevano paura che Mussolini aprisse ai socialisti e gli estremisti fascisti avevano la stessa paura, quindi ci fu praticamente una specie di accordo virtuale tra gli estremisti di destra e di sinistra per impedire l’incontro tra socialisti e fascisti moderati.
The right-wingers were afraid that Mussolini would open the door to the socialists and the fascists feared the same thing so there was essentially a kind of virtual accord between the left wing and right wing extremists to prevent any approach between the socialists and the moderate fascists.

Questo delitto non si è mai spiegato bene e probabilmente aveva ragione Mussolini, perché lui si occupò di quella indagine ancora nel 43, quando era ancora a villa Feltrinelli a Salò;
This crime was never properly explained and Mussolini was probably right because he was still busy with the investigation in 1943 when he was still at villa Feltrinelli in Salò.

gli bruciava questa accusa che lui ha sempre respinto per tutta la sua vita e francamente a mio parere aveva perfettamente ragione!
This accusation, which he had always denied throughout his life, had gotten under his skin and quite frankly, in my opinion, he was absolutely right!

Lui fu casomai vittima di uno scontro tra la destra estremista fascista e la sinistra estremista sociale comunista che volevano impedire a Mussolini di creare un governo moderato, perché Mussolini in quei giorni lì sognava ancora di avvicinare i socialisti moderati e fare un partito con loro.
If anything, he was the victim of a clash between the extremist fascist right wing and the extremist socialist-communist left wing who wanted to prevent Mussolini from creating a moderate government because in those days Mussolini still dreamed of wooing the moderate socialists and jointly establishing a party with them.

Blog – Mussolini ebbe a dire che Matteotti era “un cadavere gettato davanti ai miei piedi per farmi inciampare”.
Blog – Mussolini allegedly said that Matteotti was “a body thrown down before my feet in order to trip me up/em>.

Chi aveva interesse a farlo?
But who would have had an interest in doing this?

Arrigo Petacco – Io penso che, come ho detto prima, questo cadavere servì moltissimo alla destra reazionaria, quella per intenderci di Farinacci e altri che voleva impedire i Mussolini di avvicinarsi a socialisti, tanto è vero che dopo poco nacque la dittatura.
Arrigo Petacco – As I said earlier, I think that this “body” was extremely useful to the militant right wing, Farinacci’s crowd to be precise and the others that wanted to prevent Mussolini from getting any closer to the socialists, so much so that the dictatorship was born shortly thereafter.

Quindi Mussolini fu spinto,come dire a destra da chi voleva impedirgli il suo avvicinamento ai socialisti e la situazione fu tale che a un certo punto lui stesso fu io dico costretto a proclamare la dittatura il 3 gennaio del 1925 in quella occasione lì,visto che non riusciva più a liberarsi di questa colpa;
So Mussolini was pushed, let’s say to the right, by people who wanted to prevent him from approaching the socialists and the situation was such that at a certain point he was, in my own words, “obliged” to proclaim the dictatorship on 3 January 1925 on that occasion given that he could no longer avoid the blame for this event.

fece un discorso alla camera in cui disse se i fascisti sono una massa di delinquenti io sono il comandante di questa banda di delinquenti e da quel momento comando io;
He gave an address in the Chamber during which he said that “if the fascists are a bunch of criminals then I must be the leader of this bunch of criminals and therefore I am in charge”.

cioè praticamente da quel momento ci fu la dittatura.
In other words, essentially from that moment on the dictatorship was a fait accompli.

Blog – Possono esserci delle attinenze dal punto di vista storico tra i delitti Moro e Matteotti?

Arrigo Petacco – Con un po’ di fantasia forse sì, perché anche Moro fu ucciso perché voleva aprire ai comunisti e quindi sì, c’è qualche affinità, però è un po’ difficile volere collegare i due episodi.

Oppure Matteotti venne ucciso perché era uno dei principali esponenti del partito socialista, al quale Mussolini meditava di rivolgersi affinché non impedisse la formazione di un nuovo governo basato sulla più stretta collaborazione con la Confederazione generale del lavoro e con le masse operaie.
Another is that Matteotti was killed because he was one of the leading members of the socialist party to whom Mussolini hoped to turn in order to stop him from preventing the establishment of a new government based on closer collaboration with the General Confederation and the working masses.

L’ultima per il coraggioso discorso in Parlamento in cui accusava il fascismo di aver manipolato i risultati elettorali.
Finally, he was killed because of his courageous address to Parliament in which he accused the fascists of manipulating the election results.

” […] Contestiamo in questo luogo e in tronco la validità delle elezioni della maggioranza.
” […] We hereby summarily reject the validity of the majority elections.

[…] L’elezione secondo noi è essenzialmente non valida, e aggiungiamo che non è valida in tutte le circoscrizioni.
[…] In our opinion the elections are essentially invalid, and we add that they are invalid in all constituencies.

[…] Per vostra stessa conferma (dei parlamentari fascisti) dunque nessun elettore italiano si è trovato libero di decidere con la sua volontà…
[…] As per your own admission (by the fascist parliamentarians) therefore, no Italian voter was actually free to make an independent decision…

[…] Vi è una milizia armata, composta di cittadini di un solo Partito, la quale ha il compito dichiarato di sostenere un determinato Governo con la forza, anche se ad esso il consenso mancasse.”
[…] You have an armed militia consisting of citizens belonging to a single Party whose stated objective is to protect a specific government by force even if it doesn’t have the support of the voters.”

Qual è la sua opinione a riguardo?
What is your opinion in this regard?

Ci sono altre ipotesi?
Are there any other theories?

Arrigo Petacco – Io credo soprattutto che una soluzione precisa non esiste, perché francamente Mussolini cercò in tutti i modi di scoprire, anzi pare che nel ’43 ai tempi di Salò avesse già individuato gli industriali che avevano organizzato il colpo;
Arrigo Petacco – Above all I believe that there is no easy solution because, quite honestly, Mussolini tried by all means, and indeed it appears that in 1943 at Salò he succeed in identifying the businessmen who were behind the coup.

e si trattava tra l’altro di industriali tutti genovesi, così almeno diceva lui;
By the bye, they were all Genoese businessmen, or so he said.

la mia opinione a riguardo è che Mussolini fu coinvolto involontariamente nel delitto Matteotti;
In that regard, I believe that Mussolini was involuntarily involved in the Matteotti murder.

lui non c’entrava affatto, non aveva nessun motivo per uccidere il capo dell’opposizione, che aveva battuto clamorosamente alle elezioni di un mese prima;
He actually had nothing to do with it and had no reason whatsoever to kill the leader of the opposition who he had soundly beaten in the elections held just one month before.

la mia ipotesi su un delitto è un’altra, intanto non volevano ucciderlo, con qualche ricatto, a denunciare quei documenti che pare che avesse in possesso, per denunciare una compagnia petrolifera americana che faceva delle trivellazioni in Puglia proprio in quel periodo lì, ma anche questa è ipotesi molto vaga.
My theory on the crime is totally different, namely that they didn’t actually want to kill Matteotti but to somehow blackmail him into not using the documents that he apparently had in his possession to file a complaint against an American oil company that was conducting drilling operations in Puglia at the time, but this is also a very vague theory.

Per il resto è tutta fantasia politica e strumentalizzata che ha praticamente falsato questa vicenda.
When all is said and done, political imagination and exploitation is what has actually distorted this case.

Comunque il delitto Matteotti fu casuale, non era premeditato, questo è molto chiaro.
In any event, what is very clear is that the Matteotti murder was totally random and not premeditated.
