Passaparola – LaVERDI, don’t close – Ruben Jais

The Guiseppe Verdi Symphonic Orchestra of Milan, founded in 1993 by Vladimir Delman, is one of the most prominent national orchestras.

The Public Administration and the State’s failure to provide most of the contributions towards the laVerdi’s cultural activities are about to shut it down completely.

Dario Franceschini.
Sign the petition to the Minister of cultural assets and activities and tourism, the Hon. Dario Franceschini.

We have not yet received any confirmation of support for 2014 from the public institutions.

Over the years we have had more than 3 million spectators, with our annual average being 200 thousand spectators yet, notwithstanding these figures, notwithstanding our activities, which include more than 280 concerts per year, and adding in all of the Foundation’s activities, which amount to more than 420 per year, we are nevertheless unable to ensure a stable, secure financial future for ourselves.

Last year for the first time were awarded a three million Euro grant from the State, of which to date we have only received 1,900,000, so we are still waiting to receive 1 million of last year’s grant and, for this year, we have not yet received any promise of public funding.

La situazione è molto complessa.
The situation is very complex indeed.

The Foundation has 150 employees, which include around eighty orchestra professionals on permanent contract, as well as around another 700 people who work in the LaVERDI world on fixed term contracts, the so-called assistants that help with the orchestra productions.

All these people, as well as their families, are finding it very difficult at this time because there is no guarantee that we will be able to carry on with our activities.

Crediamo fermamente che le attività della nostra Fondazione debbano in primis essere sostenute dal nostro lavoro e dal lavoro di chi ci vuole sostenere,;
We firmly believe that our Foundation’s activities should firstly be supported by our work and that of our supporters;

but precisely because we find ourselves in a particularly difficult situation and condition, and because world culture is here in Italy, there must be some sort of public support and that is what we’re asking for.

Support for the cultural institutions here in Italy, above all those in the music field, range from 60% for the operatic and symphonic foundations to 80% for what the law defines as Icos (literally: concert and symphonic institutions), in other words the so-called regional orchestras.

As against these percentages, the La VERDI, in other words the Giuseppe Verdi symphonic orchestra and choir receives around 26% support, which creates serious difficulties for us in terms of having to brave the so-called labour market.

Italy could make a living from its cultural heritage. Since the 1500s Italy has always been at the forefront of advances in the world of culture and has been the envy of the entire world, so I find it silly, wrong and careless to not allow our culture to become the driving force for the recovery of our economy and our institutions.

I am angry because I feel that there are structural injustices in the system by which the Italian Government distributes public funds and, as a citizen of this Country, this makes me indignant.

I think they need to take a long hard look from this perspective at the support they give to the public institutions.

Nowhere in the entire world is culture able to survive on its own, by funding itself.

Let’s just say that in recent years the Regional and Provincial Administrations have been very distant from our institution and obviously we are un happy about that.

So I appeal to all the citizens of Milan and throughout Italy to support the orchestra’s activities, both by signing the petition and, for those that have the resources, by directly supporting our orchestra’s activities.

I have launched this plea, now you please spread the word! Ruben Jais, Artistic Director of the LaVERDI Foundation
