Passaparola – Save the bees to save the planet, by Giorgio Torrazza

In 2004, local production of acacia, chestnut, citrus and meadow flower honey in Italy fell by half and the reason for this is very simple: the bees are dying.

According to estimates released by the beekeepers associations, every year some 175-thousand tons of chemical substances are sprayed onto the fields, substances that pollute and compromise the ecosystem in which the bees live and reproduce.

Here in Italy there are some 40-thousand beekeepers and 12-thousand bee-product manufacturers, and if you include all the associated secondary enterprises, together they generate a turnover of somewhere between 57 and 62 million Euro per year.

The value of the pollination services provided to the agricultural sector is estimated to run to 2.6 billion Euro .

What is of inestimable value to mankind instead is that according to the FAO data, bees are responsible for pollinating 71 of the top 100 crops that constitute around 90% of all the foodstuff products worldwide.

The multinationals encourage the indiscriminate use of insecticides and weed killers, many of which are currently banned in the European Union, but if the TTIP were to be approved, according to a study conducted by the Center for International and Environmental Law, no less than 82 pesticides currently banned in Europe but approved for use in the USA would flood onto the market, further aggravating an already dire situation.

Una follia.
This is total folly.

We interviewed a beekeeper by the name of Giorgio Torrazza who loves bees and explains in his own simple way precisely who is causing the problem and how to resolve it.

Things that are hazardous to bees: parasites and poisonous chemicals

The bee emergency is linked to parasites that come in from outside the country.

There is the Varroa parasitic mite, which has been around for more than 30 years, then there is also the Asian predatory wasp and now there is also another parasite from Africa, the (Aethina tumida), which has already arrived in Calabria and will undoubtedly get here too.

L’emergenza parassiti dà problemi, ma è gestibile.
The parasite emergency is causing problems but it is still manageable at this stage.

However, one of the things that is very difficult to manage at the moment are the chemical poisons that are being spread about like rose water on all the crops.

If you spray a weed-killer, even if it is not classified as a pesticide, do you know what happens?

Come i diserbanti uccidono le api
How weed-killers kill off the bees

This weed-killer remains on the grass and when the bees land on it in the morning to drink the dew, they drink this weed-killer too and they die.The same is true if you spray insecticides.

For example, one of my neighbours out here grows wheat on his farm and every year around May or June when the cornflowers bloom in his fields he sprays with insecticide to kill off fleas (because they claim there are fleas around and although he has never seen any he sprays insecticide anyway).

Perché chi gli ritira il grano dice:
Perhaps because the crowd that takes his wheat says:

“If you don’t spray with insecticide we won’t take your wheat!” Bees love cornflowers so the bees land on the cornflowers and they die .

Furthermore, even if there were some fleas around, quite honestly I, like many other people, would far rather eat a little less wheat, but at least poison-free.

La propaganda sui veleni
The propaganda surrounding poisons

The newspapers, magazines and fliers that the farmers receive these days are always full of propaganda like:

“at this time spray this with poison or that with weed-killer”, in other words these chemical products are being touted in a wholesale manner.

There is no longer a single crop that is grown in the fields without the use of chemical products, be they weed-killers or anti-parasitic insecticides.

Insecticides kill off insects and bees are insects too, so they also die.

Besides the bees dying, we are dying too, maybe very slowly but we are dying too and the planet is getting more and more polluted with each passing day.

Once upon a time there were wells that drew water from about 5 metres underground. You could draw water from these wells and drink it without fear and the well-water was very good indeed, but now you can’t risk drinking the water drawn from these wells because it is so full of chemicals such as weed-killers and chemical fertilisers.

In other words, there are financial interests at play here that increase the profitability of the large chemical multinationals.

What we really need is for the beekeepers to unite. All the beekeepers should indeed stand together and march to Rome or to the offices of the Coldiretti or the CIA (Italian Farmers Confederation) to press for their rights and say:

Ognuno pensa agli affari propri, a me va bene, quindi penso agli affari miei.
“Enough is enough guys, let’s produce a bit less but at the same time show some respect for the beekeepers too, because it’s not only about the beekeepers but also about the food we eat because that’s all we have!” Everyone worries about themselves and I don’t have a problem with that, but then I am also entitled to worry about myself.

What we really need is a beekeepers union that could make itself heard with pitchforks in hand as they used to do long ago!

Otherwise nothing is ever going to change here.Things will only change if the people make it change and decide at a certain point to choose certain things rather than others.

If our media was more responsible and our television services told the truth instead of merely advertising industrial products for profit then perhaps things would change.

We must sensitise people to choose certain products over others, to rather buy directly from the farmers, seek out the farmers at the farmers markets, look for those that seem to be more reliable and buy from them rather than from the supermarkets
because what the supermarkets sell these days is basically industrial produce.

We must support the farmers, follow our instincts and establish an ongoing direct relationship with the people who actually work the land.
