Message by President Jean-Claude Juncker on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day 2017
Messaggio del Presidente Jean-Claude Juncker in occasione del Giorno della memoria 2017

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Wannsee conference, where with cold, bureaucratic precision plans were laid out by the Nazi leadership to exterminate European Jews.
Quest’anno cade il settantacinquesimo anniversario della conferenza di Wannsee, dove con fredda, burocratica precisione gli alti dirigenti del Nazismo hanno programmato lo sterminio degli Ebrei in Europa.

As the years pass and as we become further removed from those events, the stronger is our duty to stand back and take the time to remember and reflect.
Più gli anni passano, allontanandoci da questi eventi, più si rafforza in noi il dovere di fermarci per ricordare, e riflettere.

This is the lesson we have received from Nobel Prize Winner Elie Wiesel, who died last year after devoting his life to be a voice for the survivors of the atrocities of the Shoah.
è la lezione che ci ha lasciato il premio Nobel Elie Wiesel, che l’anno scorso si è spento al termine di una vita dedicata a dar voce ai sopravvissuti delle atrocità della Shoah.

Our duty becomes even more compelling as every year the survivors and direct witnesses of the Holocaust become fewer and fewer, leaving the younger generations with the responsibility to carry a message that cannot lose its strength.
Il nostro dovere si fa ancor più impellente perché ogni anno i sopravvissuti e testimoni diretti dell’Olocausto diventano sempre meno, lasciando alle generazioni più giovani la responsabilità di portare un messaggio che non può perder forza.

This is also the first time that we remember the Holocaust without the presence of former German President Roman Herzog, recently passed away.
È la prima volta che commemoriamo l’Olocausto senza l’ex presidente tedesco Roman Herzog, recentemente scomparso.

It was he who in 1996 enshrined into German law the 27th of January as the Day of Remembrance of Nazi victims.
È stato lui, nel 1996, a iscrivere nel diritto tedesco il 27 gennaio quale Giorno della memoria delle vittime del nazismo;

This gesture set in motion a process that would lead the United Nations to declare in 2005 this day as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi extermination camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau on the 27th of January 1945.
il suo gesto ha messo in moto un processo che nel 2005 ha portato le Nazioni Unite a dichiarare il 27 gennaio Giorno internazionale della memoria dell’Olocausto, per commemorare il sessantesimo anniversario della liberazione del campo di sterminio nazista di Auschwitz-Birkenau il 27 gennaio 1945.

The European Union is a project rooted in the history of the European continent and fully shares this duty of remembrance.
L’Unione europea è un progetto radicato nella storia del continente europeo e condivide totalmente il dovere della memoria.

In these challenging times, memory is not only a reminder of the past, it is a compass for the future to not repeat the same mistakes and to not fall into the same traps like we have done so by allowing discrimination and hatred to spread.
In questi tempi controversi, la memoria non è solo il ricordo del passato, è anche la bussola per il futuro, per non ripetere gli stessi errori, cadendo nelle stesse trappole come abbiamo fatto in passato, consentendo il dilagare della discriminazione e dell’odio.

Elie Wiesel saw the dangerous seeds sowed by growing hatred.
Elie Wiesel ha visto il pericolo che l’odio incalzante seminava;

He recognised the threat this new tide represented and spoke up early against Antisemitism raising its ugly head again in Europe – in new forms – long before many others.
ha riconosciuto la minaccia di quella nuova marea, ha levato per primo la voce contro l’antisemitismo che in nuove, orride forme si risollevava in Europa – ben prima di molti altri dopo di lui.

History warns us that hatred can quickly tilt into incitement and violence.
La storia ci mette in guardia: basta un battere di ciglia perché l’odio si trasformi in sobillazione e violenza.

For this reason, the EU has made tackling hatred and hate speech, where it arises, a priority.
Per questa ragione l’Unione europea ha fatto della lotta all’odio e alla violenza verbale una priorità, ovunque.

The European Commission agreed in May 2016 on a code of conduct with the largest IT companies and social media platforms to monitor and remove within 24 hours illegal hate speech that is flagged to them.
Nel maggio del 2016 la Commissione europea ha concordato con le più importanti aziende informatiche e piattaforme dei media sociali di monitorare e rimuovere entro 24 ore le forme illegali di incitamento all’odio che le sono segnalate.

This complements existing legislation the European Commission enforced which criminalizes actions and words that publicly condone, deny or grossly trivialise the Holocaust.
Questa iniziativa integra la legislazione già in vigore che la Commissione europea fa rispettare e che criminalizza azioni e discorsi che pubblicamente condonano, negano o banalizzano offensivamente l’Olocausto.

Today, when “fake news” are easily spread, there cannot be any complacency regarding Holocaust denials. This applies regardless of the forms in which they are disguised:
Vista la velocità con la quale oggi si diffondono le cosiddette “notizie false”, non possiamo assolutamente abbassare la guardia di fronte al negazionismo nei confronti dell’Olocausto, in qualsiasi forma si presenti:

whether it is the so called “hard” Holocaust denial, denying that the Holocaust ever happened – criminalized by law – but also the insidious alleged “soft” Holocaust denial, which emerges in the downplaying of the scale and depth of the evil embodied by the Shoah, or the questioning of the relevance of the Holocaust for today’s world as well as in the attempts to belittle the Holocaust by pointing to other situations.
sia che si tratti del negazionismo “estremo”, che pretende che l’Olocausto non sia mai avvenuto – e che la legge considera reato – sia che si tratti di negazionismo “leggero”, che si esprime sminuendo l’ampiezza e la profondità del male incarnato dalla Shoah, oppure attraverso la messa in questione del significato dell’Olocausto per il mondo odierno o il tentativo di minimizzarlo citando altre situazioni storiche.

In the face of rising Antisemitism and other types of hatred, in the face of a resurgence of incidents incited by violence, the European Commission is determined to prevent and combat Antisemitism in all its forms and to ensure that Jews can lead the lives they want to live in Europe.
Di fronte al risorgere dell’antisemitismo e di altri tipi di odio, di fronte all’aumento di tragici eventi fomentati dalla violenza, la Commissione europea intende prevenire e combattere l’antisemitismo in tutte le sue forme e assicurare che gli Ebrei possano vivere come desiderano in Europa.

Europe will continue to be a place of peace and tolerance where bridges are built and intolerance and discrimination resisted.
L’Europa continuerà a essere il luogo della pace e della tolleranza, dove si costruiscono ponti e si resiste alla discriminazione e all’intolleranza.
