Message by President Jean-Claude Juncker on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day 2018
Messaggio del Presidente Jean-Claude Juncker in occasione del Giorno della memoria dell’Olocausto 2018
The 27th of January is a date marked in history by sorrow and grief.
Il 27 gennaio si ricorda un avvenimento storico segnato dal dolore e dalla sofferenza.
On this day 73 years ago, Allied Forces liberated the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and brought the horrors perpetrated there to an end.
In tale giorno, 73 anni fa, le Forze alleate hanno liberato il campo di concentramento di Auschwitz-Birkenau , ponendo fine agli orrori che vi erano stati perpetrati.
To mark this event, we honour today the memories of the six million Jews and other victims who perished during the Holocaust.
Per ricordare tale evento, onoriamo oggi la memoria dei sei milioni di ebrei e di tutte le altre vittime che sono morte durante l’Olocausto.
We also pay tribute to those who survived the Shoah, among them the first President of the European Parliament Simone Veil, who dedicated her life to reconciliation and who has sadly passed away this past year.
Rendiamo inoltre omaggio a quanti sono sopravvissuti alla Shoah, tra cui il primo Presidente del Parlamento europeo, Simone Veil, che ha dedicato la vita alla riconciliazione e che ci ha purtroppo lasciato lo scorso anno.
2018 marks the 80th anniversary of the ‘Reichspogromnacht’ (Night of the Broken Glass) and the 80th anniversary of the introduction of racist laws in Fascist Italy.
Il 2018 segna l’80º anniversario della “Reichspogromnacht” (la notte dei cristalli) così come l’80º anniversario dell’introduzione delle leggi razziali nell’Italia fascista.

It is a day to confront those who spread lies about our history and who question the Holocaust or negate its fundamental meaning for today’s Europe.
È una giornata di resistenza contro chi diffonde menzogne sulla nostra storia e mette in dubbio l’Olocausto o nega il suo significato per l’Europa di oggi.
As Simone Veil reminded us, it is necessary to recall the names and stories of those we have lost, to spare them from disappearing for a second time.
Come Simone Veil ci ricordava, è necessario ricordare i nomi e le storie delle persone che abbiamo perduto, per evitare che scompaiano una seconda volta.
This is a day to firmly condemn hatred, bigotry and Antisemitism in all its forms.
È una giornata in cui condannare con fermezza l’odio, il fanatismo e l’antisemitismo, in tutte le loro forme.
We need to build a strong society that stands up for what is right.
Dobbiamo costruire una società forte, che si batte per ciò che è giusto;
We need people to speak up and act when they see racist acts in public or when they hear antisemitic slogans on European streets as we have witnessed recently.
e abbiamo bisogno di persone che abbiano il coraggio di protestare e di intervenire quando assistono ad atti di razzismo in pubblico o quando nelle strade europee vengono scanditi slogan antisemiti, come è successo di recente.
As the number of remaining Holocaust survivors decreases, we have a moral responsibility to ensure that their story remains part of Europe’s collective memory, also for the young generations.
Il numero dei sopravvissuti dell’Olocausto diminuisce ed abbiamo quindi la responsabilità morale di garantire che la loro storia continui a far parte della memoria collettiva dell’Europa, anche per le giovani generazioni.
The Commission will therefore strengthen our cooperation with international organisations working on Holocaust Remembrance, as also requested by the European Parliament.
La Commissione intende pertanto rafforzare la cooperazione con le organizzazioni internazionali che si dedicano alla memoria dell’Olocausto, come ha peraltro richiesto anche il Parlamento europeo.
Holocaust education remains central to building up resilience against all forms of hatred in our European societies;

and the European Parliament has provided a useful definition of Antisemitism for better education and training.
Per educare e formare meglio, il Parlamento europeo ha elaborato un’utile definizione di antisemitismo.
Antisemitism is not only a threat for Jews but a fundamental menace to our open and liberal societies.
L’antisemitismo non rappresenta soltanto una minaccia per gli ebrei, ma anche un enorme pericolo per le nostre società aperte e liberali.
Remembering the atrocities of the Holocaust, this darkest chapter of modern European history, is essential for understanding the value of having a European Union today.
Il ricordo delle atrocità dell’Olocausto, il capitolo più buio della storia europea moderna, è essenziale per comprendere il valore dell’odierna Unione europea.
It is to prevent these horrors that we founded a Union based on universal human rights, democracy, the rule of law and non-discrimination, and it is in the name of those values that we need to preserve it and constantly improve it.
È proprio per evitare tali orrori che abbiamo fondato un’Unione basata sui diritti umani universali, sulla democrazia, sullo Stato di diritto e sulla non discriminazione, ed è in nome di tali valori che dobbiamo proteggerla e continuare a migliorarla.
