The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical-fantasy film mainly directed by Victor Fleming and based on the 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

The film stars Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, and Frank Morgan, with Billie Burke, Margaret Hamilton, Charles Grapewin, Clara Blandick, and the Singer Midgets as the Munchkins.

The film follows a schoolgirl Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) who lives on a Kansas farm with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, but dreams of a better place “somewhere over the rainbow.”
Il film segue Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), una ragazzina che vive in una fattoria del Kansas con la zia Em e lo zio Henry, ma sogna un posto migliore  “da qualche parte al di sopra dell’arcobaleno.”

There, the Good Witch of the North, Glinda (Billie Burke), advises Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and meet the Wizard of Oz, who can return her to Kansas.During her journey, she meets a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a Tin Man (Jack Haley), and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), who join her, hoping to receive what they lack themselves (a brain, a heart, and courage, respectively).
Lì, la strega buona del Nord, Glinda (Billie Burke), consiglia a Dorothy di seguire la strada di mattoni gialli  che conduce alla città di Smeraldo per incontrare il mago di Oz, che può farla tornare in Kansas. Durante il suo viaggio, incontra uno spaventapasseri (Ray Bolger), un uomo di latta( Jack Haley), e un leone codardo (Bert Lahr), che si uniscono a lei, sperando di ricevere ciò che a loro manca (rispettivamente un cervello, un cuore, e il coraggio)

All of this is done while also trying to avoid the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) and her attempt to get her sister’s ruby slippers from Dorothy, who received them from Glinda.
Nel fare tutto ciò cercano anche di evitare la malvagia strega del Nord (Margaret Hamilton) ed il suo tentativo di prendere le scarpette rosse di sua sorella a Dorothy , che le ha ricevute da Glinda.

Initially, The Wizard of Oz was not considered a commercial success in relation to its enormous budget, although it made a small profit and received largely favorable reviews.

The impact it had upon release was reportedly responsible for the release of two other fantasy films in Technicolor the following year – The Blue Bird and The Thief of Bagdad.
