L’UE SPENDE DI PIÙ PER LA RICERCA

Two EU companies among world’s largest investors in Research And Development.
Due imprese europee tra i massimi investitori mondiali in Ricerca E Sviluppo.

Despite the economic crisis, European companies spent on average 8.1% more on research and development in 2008 than they did in 2007 – roughly the same annual increase two years running.
Nonostante la crisi economica, nel 2008 le imprese europee hanno speso in ricerca e sviluppo mediamente l’8,1% in più che nel 2007; per due anni consecutivi, l’incremento annuo è stato più o meno lo stesso.

American and Japanese businesses, the EU’s biggest rivals in Research And Development spending, also stepped up investment in new product creation, but the increase – 5.7% and 4.4% respectively – was not as great.
Le imprese degli USA e del Giappone, i più importanti concorrenti dell’UE per quanto riguarda le spese in Ricerca E Sviluppo, hanno anch’esse aumentato gli investimenti per la creazione di nuovi prodotti, ma non in misura altrettanto significativa, limitandosi rispettivamente al 5,7 e al 4,4%.

This was the second year running that the Research And Development growth rate for EU companies was higher than for US companies.
Per il secondo anno consecutivo, il tasso di crescita delle spese in Ricerca E Sviluppo delle imprese europee ha superato quello delle imprese americane.

European research commissioner Janez Potocnik welcomed the results: “This is the best strategy to emerge stronger out of the crisis.”

The trends are highlighted in the EU’s 2009 Research And Development investment scoreboard, a ranking of 2 000 companies (1 000 from the EU, others mostly from the US and Japan) that represent 80% of Research And Development spending by businesses worldwide.
Le cifre riportate sopra sono tratte dal quadro di valutazione 2009 degli investimenti in Ricerca E Sviluppo elaborato dall’UE, una classifica di 2.000 imprese (1.000 dell’Unione, le altre soprattutto statunitensi e giapponesi) che rappresentano l’80% della spesa in Ricerca E Sviluppo dell’industria mondiale.

Two EU companies – Germany’s Volkswagen and Finland’s Nokia – and five US companies – including Microsoft, General Motors and Pfizer – are among the top 10 Research And Development investors.
Due imprese europee, Volkswagen (Germania) e Nokia (Finlandia), e cinque imprese americane, tra cui Microsoft, General Motors e Pfizer, figurano tra i 10 massimi investitori in Ricerca E Sviluppo.

The world’s biggest single investor was Japan’s Toyota, with €7.61bn.
Al primo posto della classifica mondiale sta la giapponese Toyota, con 7,61 miliardi di euro.

Although European companies are pumping money into Research And Development at a faster rate than their US and Japanese rivals, they still spend less in real terms.
Anche se le imprese europee aumentano le loro spese in Ricerca E Sviluppo più rapidamente che le loro concorrenti statunitensi e giapponesi, in termini assoluti continuano a spendere di meno.

European investment as a percentage of sales was 2.7% in 2008, compared with 4.5% in the US and 3.4% in Japan.
Nel 2008 gli investimenti in Ricerca E Sviluppo in percentuale delle vendite erano pari al 2,7% nell’UE, contro il 4,5% negli USA e il 3,4% in Giappone.

Those numbers are similar to 2007.

US companies increased their lead over the EU in sectors where Research And Development is most intense – pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, information and communication technologies.
Le imprese USA hanno accresciuto il loro vantaggio sull’UE nei settori in cui la Ricerca E Sviluppo è più intensa: l’industria farmaceutica, le biotecnologie, le tecnologie dell’informazione e della comunicazione.

But spending on alternative energy is growing and dominated by EU companies.
Ma sono le imprese UE che dominano un settore in forte crescita, quello delle fonti d’energia alternative.

Globally, industrial Research And Development investment grew by 6.9% – less than in 2007 (9%) and 2006 (10%).
Globalmente, gli investimenti in Ricerca E Sviluppo industriale sono aumentati del 6,9%, ossia meno che nel 2007 (9%) e nel 2006 (10%).

Companies from emerging economies account for a small share of the total investment, but that is changing.

China spent 40% more on Research And Development last year than in 2007, India 27.3 % and Taiwan 25.1%.
