Not so long ago, air travel was an occasional, expensive event.
Fino a non molto tempo fa, i viaggi aerei erano un evento tanto raro quanto costoso.

But since the European Union has enabled airlines to compete against each other, the numbers of flights and routes offered has grown hugely and the prices charged have fallen dramatically. Flying around Europe is now easier than ever.
Ma da quando l’Unione europea ha consentito alle compagnie aeree di competere tra loro, i voli e le rotte offerte si sono moltiplicati, mentre i prezzi sono crollati. Ora volare in Europa è più facile che mai.

International air travel developed on the basis of restrictive agreements between governments and national airlines.
Il trasporto aereo internazionale si è sviluppato sulla base di accordi restrittivi fra i governi e le compagnie aeree nazionali.

In the 1980s, the European Union decided to end these cosy arrangements, and open up the market to free competition. In effect, since 1993, the European Union (together with several neighbouring countries) has become a huge single market for air travel.
Negli anni Ottanta, l’Unione europea decise di porre fine a questa situazione e di aprire il mercato alla libera concorrenza: dal 1993, l’UE (insieme a molti dei paesi limitrofi) è così diventata un enorme mercato unico per il trasporto aereo.

That means that any airline granted a licence in an EU country – meeting safety standards and other conditions – can operate air services anywhere in the EU, including domestic services within another country.
Ogni compagnia aerea che abbia ottenuto una licenza in un paese comunitario e che rispetti determinati requisiti di sicurezza può operare servizi di trasporto in tutta l’Unione, compresi i voli interni in un altro paese.

Restrictions on fares, on scheduling and so on, have been swept away, and today the major restriction on new air services is the lack of capacity at Europe’s biggest airports.
Qualsiasi restrizione in termini di tariffazione, orario e via dicendo è stata eliminata, e oggi il principale vincolo cui è soggetto il trasporto aereo è la limitata capacità dei maggiori aeroporti europei.

The result has been the launch of dozens of new airlines, the introduction of the new ‘no-frills’ or ‘low-cost’ airlines, and hundreds of new services linking huge numbers of airports across Europe.
Il risultato di questa operazione è stato il lancio di una dozzina di nuovi vettori, l’introduzione di compagnie “no frills” o “low cost” e il fiorire di una miriade di nuovi servizi di collegamento tra numerosi aeroporti europei.

Prices have tumbled on all airlines, booking is easier – particularly via the internet – and passengers are now able to travel more often, more cheaply, and to more destinations.
Inoltre, i prezzi sono precipitati, prenotare è molto più facile, soprattutto tramite Internet, e i passeggeri hanno la possibilità di volare più spesso, verso più destinazioni e con poca spesa.
