Territory and Economy

Latium is one Italy’s most inhabited regions.

Located at the centre of the peninsula, its coasts are washed by the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea for more than 327 km.

Le caratteristiche del territorio sono varie:
Its geography has a variety of features:

the flat plains of the Roman and Pontino countryside are flanked by the mountains of the Latium Pre-Apennines and the Abruzzo Apennines.

The Tiber flows through Latium and is the third largest river in Italy after the Po and the Adige.

In addition to agricultural crops and livestock, economic activities have developed thanks to the relatively recent growth in industrial activities, which include machinery manufacturing, metallurgy, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and building.

Storia
History

With the Roman expansion, Latium – a territory originally inhabited by the Latini – extended its borders to the Marsians, Samnites and up to the region of Campania.

Thanks to the Emperor Augustus, Latium, along with Campania, became Italy’s first region and an extension of Rome itself.

This region achieved a history of its own only after the Gothic War (535-553) and the Byzantine conquest, as the “Roman Duchy” came under the rule of the Eastern Emperor.

But it soon came under the dominion of the Pope. The Church was also able to strengthen its territorial and political power after Sutri, Bomarzo, Amelia and Orte were handed over.

However, at the same time, the secular and ecclesiastic aristocracy were the source of many different power struggles that continued until the mid-16th century.

Papal authority was restored between 1353 and 1367, leading later to the reconstitution of Latium and the rest of the Papal States.

From the mid-16th century, Latium once again lost its autonomy to become, once again, a Papal State.

After the brief period of the Roman Republic from 1798 to 1799 and the region’s annexation to France by Napoleon I, as a department of Rome (1808-1814), Latium once again became part of the Papal States.

The Region was reunited to the Kingdom of Italy in 1870 when General Cadorna entered the Papal territory (12 September) and occupied Rome on 20 September.

As you walk along the paths in the park you meet strange creatures carved into the rocks, grotesque figures of humans and animals and strange crooked buildings.
