Budding translators receive EU translation prizes
Traduttori in erba ricevono i premi di traduzione UE
Twenty-seven “young translators” – one from each EU Member State – come to Brussels today to receive the prizes of the first ever European translation contest for schools.
Ventisette “giovani traduttori” – uno per ciascuno Stato membro dell’UE – sono oggi a Bruxelles per ricevere i premi del primissimo concorso europeo di traduzione per le scuole.
Mr Leonard Orban, the European Commissioner for Multilingualism, will give a press conference in the press room of the Berlaymont building welcoming the winners of the “Juvenes Translatores” (latin for young translators) contest and hand them their awards.
Leonard Orban, Commissario europeo responsabile per il multilinguismo, terrà una conferenza stampa nella sala stampa del palazzo Berlaymont in cui porgerà il benvenuto ai vincitori del concorso “Juvenes Translatores” (che in latino significa giovani traduttori) e consegnerà loro il meritato riconoscimento.
>>>“These young people have shown that they are the actors of their own and of the EU’s future.” Mr Orban said in anticipation of the ceremony.
“Questi giovani hanno dimostrato di essere attori del proprio futuro e di quello dell’Europa” ha affermato il Commissario Orban prima della cerimonia.
He then went on “They have built bridges between cultures while assembling words for their translation.
Ed ha continuato:”Essi hanno gettato ponti tra le culture costruendoli con le parole della loro traduzione.
I am also proud that the work of our translators, often invisible but indispensable to the EU, is in the limelight today” Sono anche orgoglioso che l’operato dei nostri traduttori, spesso invisibile ma indispensabile per il funzionamento dell’UE, venga oggi alla ribalta”.
In addition to the award ceremony in the Commission headquarters, the young translators visit the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission.
Oltre a presenziare alla cerimonia di premiazione nella sede centrale della Commissione, i giovani traduttori si recheranno in visita alla Direzione generale della Traduzione della Commissione europea.
There the winners meet professional translators who translate European legislative and policy documents and see which tools and working methods translators use in their work.
Lì i vincitori incontreranno i traduttori professionisti che traducono i documenti legislativi e politici dell’Europa e prenderanno conoscenza degli strumenti e dei metodi di lavoro usati dai traduttori.
The prize also includes a visit to Brussels.
Il premio comprende anche una visita guidata di Bruxelles.

The Juvenes Translatores contest was organised by the Translation DG of the European Commission and took place simultaneously in all Member States on 14 November 2007 under the supervision of the schools involved.
Il concorso Juvenes Translatores è stato organizzato dalla Direzione generale della Traduzione della Commissione europea e si è svolto simultaneamente il 14 novembre 2007 in tutti gli Stati membri sotto la supervisione delle scuole selezionate.
Participants were given two hours to translate one of the 23 different original texts on the subject of responsible and alternative tourism into any other official language of the EU.
I partecipanti avevano due ore per tradurre in una qualsiasi delle lingue ufficiali dell’UE uno dei 23 diversi testi originali aventi per argomento il turismo alternativo e responsabile.
Over 1,300 texts were sent in, representing 134 different combinations between source and target languages.
Sono pervenuti più di 1 300 testi corrispondenti a 134 diverse combinazioni tra lingue di partenza e lingue d’arrivo.
Translators of the Translation DG marked the texts and were therefore instrumental in determining the best translation from each EU Member State.
I traduttori della Direzione generale della Traduzione hanno valutato i testi consentendo così di selezionare la migliore traduzione proveniente da ciascuno Stato membro dell’UE.
This first-ever translation contest was organised by the European Commission as a pilot project to raise awareness of the central role of translation in the multilingual policy pursued by the Commission.
Questo concorso di traduzione, il primo in assoluto organizzato dalla Commissione europea, era concepito quale progetto pilota e intendeva far opera di sensibilizzazione sul ruolo centrale della traduzione nell’ambito della politica di multilinguismo perseguita dalla Commissione.
The project also gave the students an opportunity to see what it is like to be a translator.
Questo progetto ha offerto inoltre agli studenti un’opportunità per rendersi conto di cosa significa essere traduttore.
