Le code al bancomat
Queues at the ATM machines

Questa mattina un gruppo di persone si è messo in coda davanti a un bancomat.
This morning a group of people formed a queue in front of an ATM machine.

Nessuno prelevava. Discutevano del più e del meno tra di loro.
No one was actually making any cash withdrawals. They were simply talking to each other about this and that.

I passanti li osservavano con preoccupazione e si dicevano l’un l’altro: “Hai visto che c’è la coda…”.
Passers-by watched them worriedly, asking each other: “Have you noticed that there is a queue…”.

Alcuni si fermavano mettendosi diligentemente in fila. Poiché nessuno prelevava la fila si allungava a vista d’occhio.
Some of them stopped and diligently joined the queue. Since no one was drawing and money, the queue was getting longer by the minute.

As the size of the group grew larger, so the level of fear increased, as did the uncontrolled rumours circulating that the bank had gone bust.

Sportelli chiusi, bancomat all’asciutto.
Tellers closed, ATM machine empty.

I primi della fila rimanevano però imperturbabili, chiacchieravano, scherzavano.
However, those at the front of the queue remained calm and continued chatting and cracking jokes.

Dopo una mezz’ora una signora è uscita dalla fila e si è avvicinata a un ragazzo appoggiato al bancomat.
After about half an hour, one lady stepped out of the queue and approached a young man who was leaning up against the ATM machine.

Gli ha domandato perché la banca non erogava i soldi. Il ragazzo ha risposto che non era lì per prelevare, ma per seminare il panico.
Then she asked him why the bank had stopped paying out money. The young man answered that he was not actually there to draw any money, but simply to sow panic.

Il terrore sta contagiando tutti, ma la stalla è aperta da tempo e i buoi sono già scappati.
Fear is affecting everyone, however, the stable door has been open for some time and the horses have long since bolted.

Si è svegliato Morfeo Napolitano chiedendo “Regole etiche per le banche”.  Da far tremare i polsi.
Morpheus Napolitano has finally woken up and is now asking for “Ethical rules for the banks”. It’s enough to make one quake with fear.

Dopo le rassicurazioni dello psiconano la Borsa di Milano è stata rasa al suolo.
Following the psychdwarf’s reassurances, share values on the Milan Stock Exchange plunged through the floor.

Perché non chiuderla per un mese insieme alle Borse più importanti?
Why not shut it down completely for one month, and do the same with the world’s most important Bourses?

Nel frattempo, con calma, si possono riunire le banche centrali, il G8 e prendere decisioni comuni e definitive.
In the interim, meetings could be held with the world’s central banks and the G8, in order to make a number of final, mutually acceptable decisions.

La distruzione del valore delle azioni equivale a un olocausto degli investitori.
For the investors, the plummeting share prices are tantamount to the holocaust.

Quanto può andare avanti? E perché deve andare avanti?
For how long can this go on? And why should it go on?

Chi ha comprato un’azione ha dato i suoi risparmi a un’azienda in cui riponeva la sua fiducia.
The person buying the shares has already given his/her savings to a company in which he/she placed his/her trust.

E’ lui che perde i soldi, non l’azienda.
He/she is the one that has lost money, not the company in question.

Stiamo assistendo a un gioco al massacro. Falliranno le famiglie, non le banche.
What we are witnessing is a game to the death. Families are the ones going bankrupt, not the banks.

I governi non possono far saltare il sistema bancario.
Governments cannot make an entire banking system fail.

Hanno la possibilità di creare la moneta dal nulla. Di scaricarla sul debito pubblico.
They are in a position to create more money from nothing, and to unload it on the citizens as public debt.

Non esiste la moneta, esiste il debito.
Money does not exist, all that there is, is debt.

I soccorsi alle banche li pagano i cittadini.
The citizens are the ones that end up bearing the burden of the aid granted to the banks.

Quando Paulson, il ministro del Tesoro degli Stati Uniti, regala 700 miliardi di dollari alle banche, indebita tutti gli americani.
When American Treasury Minister Paulson gives the banks a 700 billion dollar gift, what he is doing is dumping every American citizen into debt.

Loro, i figli, i nipoti pagheranno il debito con le tasse.
They, their children and their grandchildren will continue to repay this debt through their taxes.

Quando Testa d’Asfalto dice che gli italiani non perderanno neppure un euro, non spiega che gli stessi italiani si indebiteranno di decine di miliardi di euro per salvare le banche.
When Tar Head states that the Italians will not lose even a single Euro, what he conveniently forgets to mention is that the Italians will find themselves indebted to the tune of tens of billions of Euro, purely in order to save the banks.

E’ una strana società. Nasciamo con il debito, viviamo per pagare i debiti, moriamo lasciando in eredità i debiti.
Ours is a strange society. We are born in debt, we then spend our entire lives paying off debts and then we die, leaving a heredity of debt.

Debiti fatti da altri, da governi che non ci chiedono mai il permesso.
Debt that was created by others, namely by governments that never bother to ask for our permission.

Spendono i nostri debiti.
They spend our debts.

A chi conviene l’azzeramento del valore di Borsa delle aziende?
Who really stands to gain anything from plummeting share values of the companies quoted on the stock exchange?

Forse a chi ha debiti e, per non rimborsarli, li distrugge?
Perhaps it is those that are in debt and that arrange to eliminate their debts in order to avoid having to repay them?

You should also start forming queues in front of your local ATM machines.

Your co-citizen’s adrenalin levels are bound to go clean through the roof.
