Mattress Banks

Una banca serve a far girare i soldi, a prestarli ai privati, alle aziende. A bank is useful for making money go round, lending to private individuals, to companies.

Se non li presta è perché non li ha o perché non si fida.
If it’s not lending that’s because it doesn’t have it or because it doesn’t trust them.
In questo momento sono vere tutte e due le ipotesi.
Right now both hypotheses are true.

Ha pochi soldi e, soprattutto, non si fida.
There’s little money and above all there’s no trust.

Le banche sono diventate dei materassi.
Banks have become mattresses.

They keep the money in-house and they don’t lend to anyone anymore, and particularly not to the other banks.

Se queste fallissero perderebbero il credito.
If they were to fail then they would lose the cash.

Le banche fanno quello che rimproverano ai correntisti, mettere i risparmi nel materasso.
The banks are doing what they tell us off for, as current account holders (putting savings under the mattress).

Fidi non ne concedono a nessuno, non si fidano. E’ la politica del sospetto.
They are not giving overdrafts to anyone.They don’t trust anyone. It’s the politics of suspicion.

I clienti stanno diventando a loro volta sospettosi.
In turn the clients are becoming suspicious.

E spostano i loro soldi dalle banche ai titoli di Stato.
And they are moving money from the banks to the State Bonds.

Per questo Tremonti può entrare nel capitale delle banche con il decreto salva-banche: grazie ai capitali in fuga dalle banche trasformati in Bot e CCT.
This is why Tremonti can participate in the ownership of the banks with the “Save the banks” decree: with the capital in flight from the banks that’s transformed into BOT and CCT.

In sostanza è un giro conto. Più Stato e meno mercato, più Berlusconi e Geronzi e meno Profumo e Passera.

Le aziende sono in asfissia economica. Le banche non gli danno più credito e questo, in Italia, significa la fine.

Le aziende, in particolare le piccole, sono obbligate a reggersi sul debito a causa dello Stato. The businesses, especially the small ones, are obliged to support themselves on debt because of the State.

Ogni volta che emettono una fattura devono anticipare l’IVA.
Every time they issue an invoice they have to pay the sales tax up front.

Le fatture sono pagate, se va bene, a 120 – 160 giorni.
The invoices are paid, if all goes well, at 120 -160 days.

Se va male, mai e l’IVA viene rimborsata dallo Stato in tempi biblici.
If things don’t go well, never. And the sales tax is reimbursed by the State in biblical time frames.

Le aziende devono pagare tasse presunte e anticipate. La mafia è cento volte più corretta.
The businesses have to pay presumed taxes and in advance.The mafia is a hundred times more correct.

Se una società ha un certo profitto in un anno, deve pagare le tasse su quel profitto, in anticipo, anche per l’anno successivo. E se l’anno dopo ha una perdita?
If a society has a certain profit in a year, it has to pay taxes on the profit, in advance, even for the following year. And if the following year it has a loss?

Le aziende si indebitano a causa dello Stato e devono rivolgersi alle banche.
The businesses get into debt because of the State and they have to turn to the banks.

Se queste non fanno credito, le aziende chiudono.
If these don’t give them credit, the businesses close down.

E’ quello che sta succedendo e che succederà nei prossimi mesi a centinaia di migliaia di aziende. Grandi, medie, piccole, a conduzione familiare.
It’s what is happening and that will happen in the next few months for hundreds of thousands of businesses. Large, medium small, and family-run.

Le tasse non le pagheranno più, saranno fallite.
They will no longer pay taxes, they will have gone under.
