Lettera a un ragazzo del 2009

Letter to a 2009 young person

“Caro ragazzo, cara ragazza del 2009,
Dear lad, dear lass of 2009,

sono un ex ragazzo degli anni ’60, mi chiamo Beppe Grillo, ho sessant’anni.
I am a lad of the 1960s. My name is Beppe Grillo and I’m 60 years old.

Faccio parte della generazione che ti ha fottuto.
I am part of the generation that has screwed you.

Il tuo futuro è senza pensione, senza TFR, senza lavoro.
Your future is without a pension, without TFR {lump sum payment on retirement}, without work.

Il tuo presente è nelle mani di vecchi incartapecoriti, imbellettati, finti giovani.
Your present is in the hands of old wizened, dolled up, “pretend youngsters”.

Quando ero bambino l’aria e l’acqua erano pulite, il traffico era limitato, la mia famiglia non faceva debiti e tornavo a scuola da solo a piedi.
When I was a child, the air and the water were clean, traffic was limited, my family didn’t run up debts and I walked home from school on my own.

The State slaughters hadn’t started, Milan‘s Piazza Fontana was just a place where the trams went by.

Le imprese erano gestite da imprenditori.
The companies were managed by entrepreneurs.

E’ strano dirlo ora, ma c’erano persone che investivano il loro denaro per sviluppare le aziende.
It is strange to say this now, but there were people who invested their own money to develop the companies.

E manager che vedevano lontano.
And managers that could see far.

Enrico Mattei dell’ENI, ucciso in un attentato, Adriano Olivetti, Mondadori, Ferrari, Borghi e cento altri che non ricordo.
ENI’s Enrico Mattei, killed in an attack, Adriano Olivetti, Mondadori, Ferrari, Borghi and a hundred others that I don’t remember.

Intorno alle città c’erano i prati e non i cimiteri di cemento che chiamano unità residenziali.
Around the cities there were meadows and not the cement cemeteries called residential units.

La bottiglia di latte la riportavo al lattaio e non costruivano inceneritori.
The milk bottle that I took back to the milkman and they didn’t build incinerators.

La televisione era un servizio pubblico in cui lavoravano anche veri giornalisti come Enzo Biagi, e con solo un quarto d’ora di pubblicità al giorno.
The television was a public service where real journalist worked, people like Enzo Biagi, and with only fifteen minutes of advertising a day.

Quando si parlava si usava il tempo futuro.
When people talked they talked using the future tense.

Il presente e soprattutto il passato erano verbi di complemento.
The present and the past were complement verbs.

I giardini pubblici erano puliti e sui marciapiedi si camminava senza doversi destreggiare tra le macchine parcheggiate.
The public parks were clean and you could walk along the pavements without having to weave in and out of the parked cars.

Le persone erano più gentili, spesso sorridevano.
People were kinder and they would often smile.

Sul Corriere della Sera scrivevano Montanelli, Buzzati e Pasolini.
In Il Corriere della Sera, Montanelli, Buzzati and Pasolini were writing.

I genitori sapevano che i loro figli avrebbero avuto un futuro migliore.
Parents knew that their offspring would have a better future.

Solo dal punto di vista economico, ma questo non potevano prevederlo.
Only from the point of view of money, but they had no means of foreseeing that.

I fiumi erano puliti e si poteva fare il bagno nel fine settimana che non si chiamava ancora week end.
Rivers were clean and you could go for a swim at the weekend that wasn’t called “week end” in Italian at that time.

L’unico problema era rappresentato dagli imprendibili tafani.
The only problem was with the uncatchable horse flies.

Le spiagge erano libere e il mare quasi sempre verde azzurro.
Beaches were free and the sea was almost always blue-green.

La P2 era una variabile al quadrato e non ancora l’antistato progettato da Cefis.
The P2 was a squared variable and not yet the anti-State planned by Cefis.

Gelli non aveva arruolato il novizio Berlusconi con la tessera 1816.
Gelli had not recruited the novice Berlusconi with the card number 1816.

L’Italia era una e indivisibile e Bossi studiava alla scuola per corrispondenza Radio Elettra.
Italy was a single indivisible entity and Bossi was studying with the “Radio Elettra” correspondence school.

Si lavorava duro, ma si poteva risparmiare e la pensione era un approdo sicuro.
Everyone worked hard, but you could save and the pension was a safe haven.

Era un piccolo Eden, ora perduto.
It was a little Eden. Now it is lost.

Non sapevamo di averlo.
We didn’t know we had it.

Molti lo disprezzavano.
Many people were disparaging about it.

Negli ultimi sessant’anni abbiamo avuto uno sviluppo senza progresso.
In the last 60 years we have had a development without progress.

E ora non ci resta neppure lo sviluppo.
And now we don’t even have development.

Le generazioni che ti hanno preceduto meriterebbero un processo da parte tua, caro ragazzo e cara ragazza.
The generations that came before you, deserve to be put on trial by you, dear lad, dear lass.

Sono colpevoli di averti rubato il futuro.
They are guilty of having stolen your future.

Loro vivono nel presente con la seconda casa, le pensioni senza base contributiva.
They are living in the present with the second home, the pensions without a contributory basis.

Loro ti governano.
They are governing you.

L’Italia ha la coppia di cariche dello Stato Presidente/Primo ministro più vecchia del mondo.
Italy has the oldest couple of State office holders President/Prime Minister in the whole world.

Loro usano la Polizia contro gli studenti e i precari.
They use the police against the students and the precarious workers.

Loro hanno ucciso la democrazia e le aziende come Tronchetti e Geronzi, i brizzolati di successo.
They have killed democracy and the companies like Tronchetti and Geronzi, the crumbs of success.

Caro ragazzo e cara ragazza, non potete più stare a guardare, la vita vi scivola tra le mani.
Dear lad, dear lass, you can no longer stand and watch.

Voi, invece di lasciarla scivolare, trattenetela.
Your life is sliding out of your hands. You, instead of letting it slide away, hold onto it.

Io non sono in grado di dare lezioni a nessuno.
I am not able to give lessons to anyone.

Ho fatto troppi sbagli e sono troppo vecchio (anche se non dimostro i miei anni, belin).
I have made too many mistakes and I am too old (even though I don’t show my age, crikey!).

Ma ho vissuto un tempo più bello, più vero, più colorato, più umano.
But I have lived in a more beautiful, truer, more colourful, more human, time.

E so che è possibile anche per voi.
And I know that it is possible for you as well.

Loro non si arrenderanno mai (ma gli conviene?).
They will never give up (but is it in their interests?).
