Samanta Di Persio in collegamento da L’Aquila
Samanta Di Persio speaking from L’Aquila

The blog has managed to reach Samanta Di Persio by telephone. She is the author of the book “Morti Bianche” and she lives in L’Aquila.

“Sono Samanta Di Persio e vivo a L’Aquila.

”I am Samanta Di Persio and I live in L’Aquila.

Last night the first shock that was quite strong was at 11 pm.

I heard people on the stairs who were going out and shouting.

But it stopped straight away and my family didn’t go out.

>>> Siamo rimasti in casa.
We stayed in the house.

Ci siamo addormentati.

We went to sleep.

Then about 3:30 am, there was another tremor, really strong.

Sembrava non finire mai.

It seemed to never end.

Then loads of things started to fall down.

Libri, calcinacci e anche parti del soffitto.
Books, chunks of plaster, and even parts of the ceiling.

E appena è finita siamo scesi, abbiamo abbandonato la casa.
As soon as it had finished, we went down and we abandoned the house.

While we were going down we realised that the building was ripped open.

Then we all met up together in the square because the houses had been evacuated and they are still empty.

During the night, in the zone where I live, near the regional hospital, I have to say that no one came.

Né la polizia, né i vigili del fuoco.

We didn’t see the police, nor the fire-fighters.

We saw nothing of anybody until this afternoon.

Meanwhile we heard the news because we listened to the radio, and we learned that the historical centre has been destroyed.

And we got proof of that from the people who started to arrive from the centre and they had photos of the Prefecture that was destroyed and the streets in the centre destroyed.

E addirittura arrivavano delle persone che abitavano in centro e avevano già delle ferite ed erano state all’ospedale e quindi avevano dei punti in testa.
And even people living in the centre came and they had injuries and had already been to the hospital and thus they had stitches in their head.

I don’t know how to describe it, because I have never had an experience like that.

Really when I think of earthquakes in the past, when you live through it personally, it is really different.

Hai paura.

You are afraid.

You are afraid for yourself and your family.

Then bit by bit you get to find out that there are people who are no longer with you.

And among these people there are acquaintances, and you realise the drama of everything that has happened.

E ti rendi conto che hai perso tutto.
And you realise that you have lost everything.

You have lost your home and everything you had.

Perché non c’è più niente.”
Because there’s nothing left.”
