There are two scientific theories which describe gravity: Newton's Theory of Universal Gravitation and Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. For almost all human activities Newton's theory is adequate. Einstein's theory is more complete but also much harder to understand. It also uses much more complex mathematics. Esso utilizza anche matematica molto più complesso. The Force of Gravity La forza di gravità Objects that have mass pull on each other. We call this the pull of gravity. Chiamiamo questo il tiro di gravità. Gravity always pulls objects together. Gravità tira sempre oggetti insieme. It never pushes them apart. Mai li spinge apart. The strength of the pull between two objects depends on two things. The first is the mass of both of the objects. The larger the masses the stronger the pull of gravity. The second is the distance between the objects. The smaller the distance the greater the pull of gravity. Both of the objects will feel this pull equally. A pull (or a push) is a force. Un pull (o un push) è una forza. So this is the force of gravity. Quindi questa è la forza di gravità. Weight Peso The Earth has mass. La terra ha massa. Every object and person also has mass. So the Earth pulls on every object and person and they pull on the Earth. This pull is what we call weight. The greater the masses of objects and the smaller the distance between their centres, the greater the gravitational force between them. The Moon has a mass 0.0123 times the mass of the Earth. A bit more than 1% of the mass of the Earth. But it also has a radius 0.273 times the radius of the Earth. About 1/4 of the size of the Earth. Circa 1/4 delle dimensioni della terra. The combination of these two things, (less mass and smaller radius), makes the gravity on the surface of the Moon about 1/6 that of Earth. Anything on the Moon weighs 1/6 of its weight on Earth. Its mass is still the same, but its weight is less. Weightlessness Assenza di gravità Things that are falling still have mass, but we cannot measure their weight, so we say that they are "weightless". Astronauts and spacecraft are weightless in space. Astronauti e veicoli spaziali sono senza peso nello spazio. They look like they are floating. Sembrano essi sono galleggianti. Really they are falling in an orbit around the Earth. They still have mass, so we still have to push them or pull them to make them go or stop. Astronauts inside spacecraft use their arms and legs to jump or to stop. Spacecraft use rockets to move. Sonda USA razzi per spostare. History Storia Sir Isaac Newton is said to have 'discovered' gravity. Sir Isaac Newton è detto di aver 'scoperto' gravità. He worked out the laws that gravity seemed to follow. These rules are simple but surprisingly accurate; they have been used to work out how to get space probes to planets across billions of miles. In 1915, Albert Einstein showed that gravity could be explained as the bending of space (and time) by mass. A planet makes a dent in space that makes things fall towards it or curve around it. The moving object is passing through more space, in the same amount of time, at the same speed. In fact there is also an effect on time: Einstein predicted that time slows down near a large mass, and this has been verified using very accurate clocks on satellites.
