Public highways, private profits

In questi giorni sono disponibili le semestrali delle grandi aziende.
In recent days, the half-yearly financial results of some of the major companies have been made public.

Le aziende vanno divise in società di mercato e concessionarie di Stato. Il primo gruppo è sempre meno numeroso e vive spesso di stenti. I concessionari sono invece in aumento e godono di una salute di ferro.
Companies must be divided into two categories, namely, market companies and State concessionaries. Those in the first category are often having a hard time while those in the latter, instead, have the constitution of an ox.

La concessione è un diritto di sfruttamento dei cittadini assegnato dallo Stato. Si possono dare in concessione acqua, spazzatura, energia elettrica, strade.Tutti i bisogni primari di cui le persone non possono fare a meno.
These concessions are seen as a licence, issued by the Government, to exploit the citizens. The kind of concessions handed out may involve the provision of water, refuse collection, electricity and roads, in other words, the kind of primary services that people can no longer do without.

I ricavi di Atlantia sono aumentati del 7,8% in sei mesi, arrivando a 1,6 miliardi di euro.
Atlantia’s revenues have increased by 7,8% in just six months and now stand at 1.6 billion Euro.

1,3 miliardi di euro provengono dai pedaggi nonostante il traffico sia rimasto stabile. Le tariffe sono aumentate infatti del 3,6% dal primo gennaio 2008.

Atlantia ha fatto un utile di 366 milioni di euro in un semestre (+7,4%).
Atlantia, meanwhile, has posted profits amounting to 366 million Euro in a single six-month period (+7,4%).

Quando le autostrade erano gestite dallo Stato, gli utili rimanevano agli italiani.
When the highways were still controlled by the Government, these profits still belonged to the Italians.

Oggi sono spartiti tra gli industriali alla Benetton e i partiti e il Paese diventa sempre più povero.
Now, instead, they are being shared out amongst the industrialists at Benetton and the political parties, while the Country becomes increasingly poorer.
