Far Oer, Danimarca, il massacro delle balene
Faroe Islands, Denmark, the slaughter of pilot whales
Quando i delfini balena si avvicinano alle isole Far Oer della Danimarca è un giorno di festa.
When the dolphin whales get close to Denmark’s Faroe Islands it is a day of celebration.
Le scuole chiudono e i bambini si recano in spiaggia insieme ai genitori.
Schools close and the children come to the beach with their parents.
La popolazione, vestita con i costumi tradizionali, si appresta a ricevere i cetacei.
The people dress in traditional costume, and are eager to receive the cetaceans.
I delfini balena arrivano in gruppi, molte femmine con i piccoli.
The dolphin whales arrive in groups, there are many females with their young.
Sono animali socievoli, curiosi e non hanno timore dell’uomo.
They are sociable animals, they are curious and they are not afraid of humans.

In motoscafo spingono le balene nelle baie dove l’acqua è poco profonda.
The motor boats urge the whales into the bay which is not deep.
Quindi si avvicinano con fiocine di due chili e le piantano più volte nelle carni degli animali finchè non li hanno immobilizzati.
Then they come close up with 2 kilo harpoons that are used many times on the flesh of the animal until it is immobilised.
I carnefici delle Far Oer possono allora estrarre i coltelli da 15 centimetri e tagliare grasso e carne viva per trapassare la spina dorsale.
The Faroe Island executioners can then pull out the blades and cut up live fat and flesh to get through the spinal chord.
I piccoli danesi applaudono mentre le balene gridano.
The young Danes applaud while the whales cry out.

Il delfino balena è una specie protetta e non si conosce il numero di esemplari ancora esistente.
The dolphin whale is a protected species and the number still in existence is not known.
