That thing in Lombardy

Lo sentite il rumore degli zoccoli?
Do you hear that sound of hooves?

Arrivano dal Piemonte, dal Veneto, dalla Lombardia.
They come from Piedmont, from the Veneto and from Lombardy.

Due milioni, forse tre milioni di persone perderanno entro un anno (e stanno già perdendo) il posto di lavoro.
Two million, or perhaps three million people will lose their jobs within a year (they are already in the process of losing them).

Lo perdono al Nord, dove c’è, è elementare, i disoccupati del Sud non possono perdere quello che non hanno.
They will lose their jobs in the North, obviously, because that’s where the jobs are, while in the South they cannot lose what they don’t have.

Those that go from being employed to being unemployed from one day to the next occupy the stations, hold meetings and take to the streets.

Ma la sua protesta rimane sotto vuoto spinto.

I media non ne parlano, si vergognano di mostrare padri di famiglia in mezzo a una strada.
The media prefer not to mention the problem, after all, they are ashamed to show fathers out on the street.

Per tranqullizzare usano termini soavi come “recessione tecnica” o “diminuzione del PIL”.
They use gentle terms, such as “technical recession” or “reduction in GDP” to soften the blow.

Politici e giornalisti (parlo di quelli servi, la maggioranza) sono categorie immuni dalla crisi.
Politicians and journalists (and here I’m talking about those that are mere servants to the majority) are two job categories that are immune to the crisis.

Perchè dovrebbero occuparsene?
Why then should they concern themselves with it?

E’ un problema che riguarda sempre gli altri.
It is a problem that always only affects other people.

L’unica soddisfazione per i nuovi disoccupati è che non moriranno più sul lavoro, ma soltanto di fame.
The only consolation for the newly unemployed is that they will no longer die on the job, they will only die of starvation.

In Lombardia è scoppiata un’epidemia, le banche si tengono i soldi e non li prestano più senza garanzie, le imprese straniere se ne vanno, quelle italiane perdono il mercato.
An epidemic has exploded in Lombardy, where the banks are holding on to their money and no longer grant any unsecured loans, foreign companies are leaving and the Italian ones are losing market share.

E’ un bollettino di guerra, ma è solo la punta dell’iceberg.
This may well be a war bulletin, but it is simply the tip of the iceberg.
