La Valle d’Aosta è la più piccola regione italiana, situata nell’estremità nord-occidentale del Paese.
Situated in the northwestern tip of the country, Valle d’Aosta is Italy’s smallest region.

I confini con la Francia sono segnati dalle montagne più alte d’Europa:

il Monte Bianco, il Monte Rosa, il Cervino e il Gran Paradiso, che la rendono una delle mete preferite dagli amanti degli sport invernali.
Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and Gran Paradiso, making it a favourite destination for winter sports lovers.

È proprio il turismo a ricoprire un ruolo chiave nell’economia della Regione, contribuendo a elevare il reddito degli abitanti, tra i più alti del paese.

Indeed it is tourism that plays a key role in the region’s economy, contributing to a per capita income that is among the highest in the country.

An abundance of water has favoured the development of a booming hydroelectric industry, but iron and steel, chemicals and mining are very important industries as well.

Le aree coltivabili sono dedicate in massima parte al foraggio per l’allevamento di bovini che favorisce anche una ricca produzione di burro e formaggi.

The crop cultivations mainly provide fodder for cattle, in turn favouring a healthy production of butter and cheese.

Storia
History

Frequentata in epoca preistorica, la popolazione indigena della Valle d’Aosta era composta dai Salassi.
Inhabited during prehistoric times, the indigenous population of Valle d’Aosta consisted of the Salassi.

I romani, attratti dalla particolare posizione, la occuparono e fondarono così nel 25 a.C. Augusta Praetoria.
Attracted by its strategic position, the Romans occupied the area, founding Augusta Praetoria in 25 BC.

Successivamente furono i Franchi ad ottenere il controllo della regione.
Subsequently the Franks obtained control of the Region.

Dall’ XI sec., i Savoia vantarono diritti feudali sulla Valle e Umberto Biancamano nel 1032 ottenne il titolo di Conte di Aosta.
Starting in the 11th century the House of Savoy claimed feudal rights over the Valley and in 1032 Umberto Biancamano obtained the title of Count of Aosta.

Nel 1191 Tommaso I di Savoia concesse alla Valle la “Carta delle Franchigie”, che sanciva il riconoscimento di un’autonomia amministrativa e politica, mantenuta fino alla vigilia della Rivoluzione Francese.
In 1191 Thomas I of the House of Savoy granted the Valley the “Carta delle Franchigie”, recognising the right to administrative and political autonomy. This right was maintained up until the eve of the French Revolution.

Con la costituzione del Regno d’Italia, il problema dell’autonomia fu più volte riproposto.

With the constitution of the Kingdom of Italy, the problem of autonomy was put forward several times.

Il 26 febbraio 1948 la Valle d’Aosta si vide riconoscere uno statuto speciale con particolare autonomia legislativa e amministrativa.
On 26 February 1948 Valle d’Aosta was granted a special statute with legislative and administrative autonomy.

La terra valdostana è ricca di tradizioni gelosamente conservate come le “Veillà”, rievocazioni degli antichi mestieri che hanno luogo nei vecchi borghi della regione.
The land of the Valle d’Aosta is rich in jealously preserved traditions such as the “Veillà”, the re-enactment of the ancient trades that were practised in the old villages in the Region.

Da non perdere le varie sagre gastronomiche dove si assaggiano i piatti più tipici della montagna, tra i quali spicca la famosa “fonduta”, a base di fontina, un vero gioiello della gastronomia locale.
Not to be missed are the various gastronomic festivals where typical mountain dishes include the famous “fonduta”, made with melted fontina cheese, a real jewel of local gastronomy.

Valle di Gressoney
The Valley of Gressoney.

Tra le maggiori attrazioni turistiche sono da segnalare a Pont-Saint-Martin, punto di accesso alla vallata, il ponte romano che risale al II sec. a.C.;
The major tourist attractions include Pont-Saint-Martin, the point of access to the valley, which boasts a Roman bridge dating back to the 2nd century BC;

la chiesa di San Rocco a Lillianes con il campanile quattrocentesco in pietra;
the Church of San Rocco at Lillianes with its 15th-century stone bell tower;

Gressoney-Saint-Jean il Castel Savoia, residenza estiva della regina Margherita. Da visitare e’ anche Gressoney-La-Trinité punto di partenza per le ascensioni al gruppo del Monte Rosa e stazione ben attrezzata per gli sport invernali.
At Gressoney-Saint-Jean, you can visit the Savoy Castle, which was the summer residence of Queen Margaret, and then Gressoney-La-Trinité, point of departure for trekking in the Monte Rosa mountains and a resort with good winter sport facilities.

La Valle d’Aosta è famosa anche per i suoi numerosi castelli, testimonianza di una storia particolarmente ricca ed intensa. Questo itinerario potrebbe iniziare a Bard, sede di un imponente forte risalente al 1034 e a Verrès, dominata dall’imponente castello costruito fra il 1361 e il 1390.
The Valle d’Aosta is also famous for its numerous castles, bearing witness to a particularly rich and intense history, in particular Bard, with its imposing fortress dating back to 1034, and Verrès, dominated by an imposing castle built between 1361 and 1390 .

Da non perdere il famoso maniero costruito nel 1340 da Aimone di Challant a Fenis sulle rovine di un castello del XII secolo.
Another splendid castle built in 1340 by Aimone di Challant at Fenis over the foundations of an ancient fort.

La valle di Cogne
The Valley of Cogne.

Dopo aver ammirato a Pont d’Aël il ponte-acquedotto romano, ardita costruzione di un solo arco che si eleva a 52 metri di altezza sul torrente, si arriva a Cogne che fa parte del Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, istituito nel 1922 e che custodisce preziose specie della flora e della fauna.

After admiring Pont d’Aël, a daring single-arched bridge-acqueduct rising 52 metres above the river, you come to Cogne, part of the Gran Paradiso National Park created in 1992, home to a rich array of flora and fauna.

A Valnontey infine è possibile visitare il giardino botanico “Paradisia” istituito nel 1955, in grado di ospitare circa 2000 specie della flora alpina europea ed extraeuropea.
At Valnontey you can visit the “Paradisia” botanical garden, which opened in 1955 and contains about 2,000 species of Alpine flora from Europe and elsewhere.
