Time for schools to enter EU Young Translator Contest
Le scuole possono iscriversi per partecipare al concorso UE dei Giovani traduttori

Secondary schools wishing to enter pupils for the 2010 EU Young Translator Contest can register from today at http://ec.europa.eu/translatores.
Le scuole secondarie che desiderano iscrivere i loro studenti all’edizione 2010 del concorso UE dei Giovani traduttori possono farlo a partire da oggi sul sito http://ec.europa.eu/translatores.

The registration period for the contest, known as ‘Juvenes Translatores’ (Latin for ‘young translators’), runs until 20 October.
Il termine di iscrizione al concorso, che va sotto il nome di ‘Juvenes Translatores’ (espressione latina per ‘giovani traduttori’), scade il 20 ottobre.

The online application form is available in all official EU languages.
Il modello di candidatura on-line è disponibile in tutte le lingue ufficiali dell’UE.

The competition, which is open to pupils born in 1993, will be held on 23 November, at the same time in all selected schools.
Il concorso, che è aperto agli studenti nati nel 1993, si terrà il 23 novembre contemporaneamente in tutte le scuole selezionate.

‘The contest is designed to promote the use and learning of foreign languages in Europe, as well as the specific art of translation,’ explained Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth.

E’ settembre, il mese dei ripensamenti sul tempo e sull’età.
We’re now in September, traditionally a time when thoughts turn to the passage of time and one’s age.

Il mese in cui, implacabili, ritornano, insieme alla vendemmia, le feste di partito.
The month in which, invariably, the time comes for not only the grape harvest, but also the political party parties.

Non c’è grande città, cittadina, paese che non ne abbia una.
There is no large city, little town or village that doesn’t have its own one.

La festa di partito ha i suoi cerimoniali, le sue liturgie, un rito sacro celebrato con i soldi pubblici.
Each political party party has its own ceremonies, liturgies and sacred rites, all performed using public funds.

La prima sono gli ospiti, di solito degli altri partiti.
The main consideration is the guests, who are usually people from the other political parties.

La seconda sono i dibattiti politici con gli ospiti degli altri partiti.
The second consideration is the political debates involving the guests from the other political parties.

La terza sono i giornalisti che riportano sui media i dibattiti politici del segretario del partito ospite, o di un suo delegato, con deputati e senatori degli altri partiti.
The third is the journalists that report on the political discussions between the guest party secretaries or one of their deputies and the other political parties’ deputies and senators.

Each year 350,000 new cases of breast cancer are detected in the European Union.

But a lack of effective technology to assist in cases that are difficult to diagnose means some cases go undetected or are incorrectly diagnosed.
Nei casi difficili da diagnosticare, però, l’assenza di una tecnologia efficace fa sì che talvolta la malattia non venga individuata o che la diagnosi non sia corretta.

The EU is investing €3.1 million to develop better and quicker breast cancer diagnostics through the HAMAM project.
Con il progetto HAMAM l’UE sta investendo 3,1 milioni di euro per sviluppare sistemi più precisi e più veloci di diagnosi del cancro al seno.

This project is developing a prototype workstation to help diagnose breast cancer by integrating multi-modal images resulting from mammography, magnetic resonance imaging and other technologies as well as patient information.

ICT research: EU funded WOUNDMONITOR helps pinpoint bacteria and speed up healing in burn victims
Ricerca nel campo delle TIC: il progetto WOUNDMONITOR, finanziato dalla UE, contribuisce a individuare i batteri e ad accelerare la guarigione delle vittime di ustioni

More than 4000 people die in the EU each year because of accidents caused by fire and many thousands more are hospitalised to receive treatment for burns.
Ogni anno nella UE muoiono più di 4 000 persone a seguito di ustioni provocate dal fuoco e diverse migliaia sono ricoverate per essere sottoposte a terapie specifiche.

Thanks to EU-funded research, medical experts will be able to more quickly identify the harmful bacteria or fungus which may be lurking in the wounds of burn victims and causing an infection, speeding up the diagnostic and healing process by days.
Grazie a una ricerca finanziata dalla UE i medici saranno in grado di individuare più rapidamente i batteri o funghi dannosi che si annidano nelle ferite degli ustionati, provocando infezioni, e quindi di ridurre di diversi giorni i tempi della diagnosi e della terapia.

Until now, doctors have had to rely on microbiological tests that took several days to identify which bacteria were causing the infection.
Fino ad oggi i medici dovevano affidarsi a esami microbiologici che richiedevano diversi giorni per individuare quali batteri fossero alla base dell’infezione.

Researchers from Germany, Italy, Lithuania and the UK have developed a small electronic device which can pinpoint the type of bacteria in just a few minutes, by identifying the minute amounts of gas the bacteria are producing.
Ricercatori tedeschi, italiani, lituani e britannici hanno ora messo a punto una piccola apparecchiatura elettronica che consente in pochi minuti di identificare i tipi di batteri basandosi sui minuscoli quantitativi di gas che gli stessi batteri producono.

The quicker infections can be diagnosed, the faster patients can be treated, which can in turn lower the cost of lengthy hospital stays.

Self-employed workers and their partners will enjoy better social protection – including the right to maternity leave for the first time – under new EU legislation that enters into force today.
I lavoratori autonomi e i loro conviventi beneficeranno di una migliore protezione sociale comprendente per la prima volta il diritto al congedo di maternità, grazie al nuovo atto legislativo dell’UE che entra in vigore in data odierna.

The Directive on self-employed workers and assisting spouses (Directive 2010/41/EU) repeals and replaces an earlier law (Directive 86/613/EEC) and improves the social protection rights of millions of women in the labour market, strengthening female entrepreneurship.
La direttiva riguardante i lavoratori autonomi e i coniugi che partecipano alle loro attività (direttiva 2010/41/UE) abroga e sostituisce una direttiva precedente (direttiva 86/613/CEE) e migliora i diritti in materia di protezione sociale per milioni di donne sul mercato del lavoro, rafforzando l’imprenditoria femminile.

At present only one in three entrepreneurs is a woman.
Attualmente le donne rappresentano appena un terzo degli imprenditori.

“With the entry into force of this new law, Europe takes an important step forward in terms of increasing social protection and providing equal economic and social rights for self-employed men and women, and their partners,” said Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship and Vice-President of the European Commission.

Lo abbiamo fatto per dare una chance ai cittadini, presi in giro da un Governo che aveva promesso altro.
We did that to give a chance for the citizens, having been taken for a ride by a government that had made promises for different stuff.

Il centrodestra non ha vinto le elezioni promettendo agli elettori una serie di leggi scansa-processi, oppure la privatizzazione dell’acqua pubblica o, peggio ancora, di voler fare dell’Italia un Paese nuclearizzato.
The Centre Right did not win the elections by promising the voters a series of “scansa-processi”y {trial-dodging} laws, or the privatisation of water, or even worse wanting to make Italy into a nuclearised country.

Borsellino: State defeat

Sono a Palermo per ricordare Paolo Borsellino e la sua scorta, a diciotto anni da quel giorno funesto, in via D’Amelio.
I am in Palermo to remember Paolo Borsellino and his bodies guards, 18 years after that fatal, terrible day in via D’Amelio.

In via D’Amelio e a Capaci saltarono in aria i valori dello Stato, non soltanto le macchine investite dalle esplosioni.
In Capaci’s via D’Amelio the values of the State went up in the air, not just the cars that were affected by the explosions.

Aveva ragione Antonino Caponnetto, fondatore del pool antimafia di cui facevano parte Borsellino e Falcone, quando, ripreso a caldo dalle telecamere, disse con la voce strozzata dal dolore:
Antonino Caponnetto, the founder of the Antimafia team which included Borsellino and Falcone, was right when he was captured by the cameras at that moment, with a voice choked with sadness, and was heard to say:

«E’ finito tutto, è finito tutto» (guarda il video).
«It’s all finished. It’s all finished.» (watch the video).

Borsellino, così come Falcone e molti altri dopo di loro tra forze dell’ordine e fedeli servitori dello Stato, furono uccisi da facce ancora senza volto che sappiamo essere oggi nelle istituzioni.
Borsellino, like Falcone and many others that came after them, including members of the security forces and faithful servants of the State, were killed by people whose faces are still not known but that we know to be today in the institutions.

Celebrare questa giornata è un dovere morale per un Paese in cui la legalità sembra essersi dissolta nell’acido, ascoltando le sentenze e le testimonianze registrate nei processi degli ultimi anni.
Celebrating this day is a moral duty for a country in which the rule of law seems to have got dissolved in acid, when you listen to the verdicts and the testimony that have been recorded in the last few years.

La Terra vista dallo spazio, da un comodo cratere lunare, da una luna di Giove, nel suo divenire in questi ultimi cento anni, un fotogramma dopo l’altro, apparirebbe come un insieme di invasati in accelerazione.

Un nido di formiche impazzite in corsa in ogni direzione dopo la distruzione del formicaio.
A nest of maddened ants rushing in every direction after the destruction of their ant hill.

Un fatto incomprensibile per un gioviano, ma anche per una qualunque persona dotata di buon senso.

The European Economic and Social Committee has signed an institutional partnership with the Italian Ministry for Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies for the FOOD 4U campaign.
Il Comitato economico e sociale europeo ha firmato un accordo istituzionale col ministero italiano delle Politiche agricole, alimentari e forestali per la campagna FOOD 4U.

With this shared patronage, the EESC wants to emphasize the importance of healthy food as well as the negative effects of unhealthy eating habits.
Con questo patrocinio congiunto, il CESE vuole sottolineare l’importanza di un’alimentazione sana e gli effetti negativi delle abitudini alimentari scorrette.

Over 30,000 schools (20% more than last year) took part in the competition to produce a short film on the value of healthy eating habits.

Music against poverty contest: young Europeans speak out on fighting worldwide poverty!
Concorso “Musica contro la povertà”: spazio ai giovani europei nella lotta contro la povertà nel mondo

Today, the European Commission launches the European Music Contest calling young Europeans, between 15 and 25, to submit a song expressing support to the fight against poverty in the world.
La Commissione Europea ha indetto oggi il concorso “Musica contro la povertà”: i giovani europei dai 15 ai 25 anni sono invitati a concorrere con brani musicali dedicati alla lotta contro la povertà nel mondo.

Each participant will create an original song on the general issue of development, and notably on the eight Millennium Development Goals.
I partecipanti dovranno comporre un brano originale sul tema dello sviluppo e in particolare sugli otto obiettivi di sviluppo del Millennio.

The winners – selected through online voting and a jury of music professionals – will get a professional studio recording of their song and will have the opportunity to perform during the European Development Days in December 2010 in Brussels.
Ai vincitori, selezionati tramite il voto online e da una giuria di professionisti, sarà offerta la possibilità di incidere il proprio brano in un vero studio di registrazione e di esibirsi a Bruxelles in occasione degli European Development Days a dicembre 2010.

The music contest is part of the “I fight poverty campaign”, dedicated to raise awareness among teenagers on the EU’s action in the field of development cooperation.
Il concorso musicale rientra nel progetto “I fight poverty”, mirato a sensibilizzare i giovani sulle iniziative dell’Ue nel settore della cooperazione allo sviluppo.

The State is indeed here, especially for Mediaset

Quando uno Stato arriva a tagliare 256 euro al mese per la pensione di un disabile e 450 euro per l’accompagno, così come sancito da un emendamento governativo alla manovra, allora lo Stato, inteso come organo che tutela la comunità, cessa di esistere.
When a State gets to the point of cutting 256 Euro a month disability grants and 450 Euro a month caregiver grants, as proposed in a Government amendment to the emergency interim budget, then the State, meaning the body that is supposed to protect the interests of the citizens, essentially ceases to exist.

Quando uno Stato taglia la cultura e l’istruzione al punto tale che le scuole pubbliche devono ricorrere a collette private per imbiancare un muro, allora lo Stato cessa di esistere.
When a State cuts its culture and education budgets to the point where public schools are obliged to resort to private fund raising in order to be able to paint a wall, then the State essentially ceases to exist.

Quando uno Stato lascia in mezzo ad una strada un terzo dei giovani in età lavorativa, e intanto vuole approvare una vergognosa legge sulle intercettazioni, ha già approvato quella sul legittimo impedimento e vuole estendere il lodo d’impunità anche ai ministri, come già fatto per il Presidente del Consiglio, allora lo Stato cessa di esistere.
When a State leaves one third of its working-age youngsters out in the street while wanting to approve a shameful wiretapping law after having already approved another law on legitimate impediment and wanting to extend the scope of this impunity bill to include all ministers, as has already been done in the case of the Prime Minister, then the State essentially ceases to exist.

Questa volta al fianco dei giornalisti dalla schiena dritta e dei cittadini che vogliono tutelare il diritto sancito dalla Costituzione: la libertà di stampa.
This time at the side of the journalists with straight backs and the citizens who want to protect the right laid down in the Constitution: press freedom.

Perché difendere un diritto dalle piazze e con le piazze è una delle ultime armi che rimane a questo Paese.
Because defending a right out in the streets and with the streets is one of the last weapons left in this country.

È un’Italia che sta implodendo.
It’s an Italy that is imploding.

Dalle industrie in crisi ai cassaintegrati, dalle forze dell’ordine senza fondi ai tagli alla cultura, alla ricerca dimenticata e alla scuola mortificata.
From industries in crisis to those who have been laid off, from the security services without funds, to cuts to the culture sector, to research that has been forgotten and the school that has been mortified.

Qualche giorno fa eravamo in strada per manifestare con i lavoratori precari.
A few days ago, we were out in the streets to demonstrate together with the “precarious workers”.

Lo stop di Napolitano al legittimo impedimento di Brancher mi ha risollevato dalla delusione per la prematura esclusione dell’Italia dai mondiali del Sudafrica.
Napolitano’s halt to Brancher’s legitimate impediment has managed to once again lift the veil of disappointment that descended on me after Italy’s early exit from the world championships in South Africa.

Lo avevo scritto qui, in questo blog. Oggi è arrivata la conferma.

Aldo Brancher, ex dipendente Fininvest, ieri condannato per falso in bilancio e finanziamento illecito all’allora Psi e recluso a San Vittore, oggi indagato per appropriazione indebita e ricettazione, è stato nominato ministro dal suo amico Berlusconi per beneficiare del legittimo impedimento.
Aldo Brancher, the former Fininvest employee who was previously convicted of fraudulent accounting and illegal funding of the then Psi (Italian Socialist Party) and imprisoned in the San Vittore Prison and now stands accused of illegal appropriation and receiving stolen goods, was appointed as minister by his friend Berlusconi simply so that he could benefit from the legitimate impediment legislation.

In questo modo, quindi, ha evitato di presentarsi questa mattina al tribunale di Milano, dove è imputato nel processo sulla scalata ad Antonveneta da parte di Bpi.
In this way, he therefore avoided appearing in the Milan court this morning, where he was to appear in the dock with regard to BPI’s takeover bid for the Antonveneta bank.
