The saviours of the Sequoias

C’erano una volta le foreste di sequoie giganti.
Once upon a time there were forests of giant Sequoias.

Alberi millenari, alti come il cielo, che si nutrivano di fuoco.
Thousand-year-old trees, as tall as the sky, that lived on fire.

Anche quando una sequoia cadeva al suolo la sua vita continuava attraverso generazioni di uomini.
Even when one of these Sequoias eventually fell to the forest floor, it continued to live through generations of men.

Si propagava nel terreno attraverso i rami.
The trees propagated themselves across the ground via their branches.

Nella valle arrivò la civiltà, la conoscenza, l’economia dell’accumulo, gli europei.
But then civilisation reached the valley and with it came knowledge, economies of scale and the Europeans.

Gli indigeni vennero imprigionati per la violazione di leggi che non conoscevano.
The indigenous people were imprisoned for breaking laws that they knew nothing about.

Oggi ho sottoscritto l’appello “Io sto con Emergency”, lanciato dall’organizzazione stessa, a sostegno dei tre operatori italiani (Matteo Dell’Aira, Marco Garatti e Matteo Pagani) arrestati a Lashkar Gah, in Afghanistan.
Today I signed the appeal: ‘Io sto con Emergency’ {I’m standing by Emergency}, started by the organisation itself, in support of the three Italian workers (Matteo Dell’Aira, Marco Garatti and Matteo Pagani ) arrested in Lashkar Gah, in Afghanistan.

Emergency è presente in Afganistan dal 1999 con tre centri chirurgici, un centro di maternità, una rete di 28 centri sanitari.
Emergency has been present in Afghanistan since 1999 with three hundred surgeons, a maternity centre and a network of 28 health centres.

L’Italia ha rinnovato i finanziamenti alla missione afghana e rinforzato il contingente militare, e quindi il proprio impegno, proprio mentre gli Stati Uniti studiavano un piano di ritiro truppe da quella regione.
Italy has renewed financing to the Afghan mission and reinforced the military contingent, and thus its own commitment, right at the time when the United States was studying a plan to withdraw troops from that region.

La nostra nazione merita almeno di avere le dovute spiegazioni e garanzie affinchè vengano rispettati i diritti umani dei connazionali arrestati.
Our nation deserves at least to have the explanations and guarantees so that the human rights of its nationals who have been arrested can be respected.

Mi chiedo se il governo stia tergiversando nel pretendere un canale preferenziale per ricevere spiegazioni e dettagli dell’operazione, oppure stia tacendo al Paese le informazioni in suo possesso, limitandosi ad accusare il Times di aver divulgato “notizie erronee”.
I’m wondering whether the government is prevaricating in insisting on a preferential channel to receive explanations and details of the operation, or whether it has the information and it is keeping it from the country, just limiting itself to accusing ‘The Times’ of having divulged “erroneous news”.

Just recently, above all for evil.

Siamo un Paese straordinario che ha esportato il fascismo, le banche, la mafia.
We are an extraordinary country that has exported fascism, the banks and the mafia.

Noi ci siamo abituati, abbiamo anticorpi millenari, ma gli altri sono indifesi.
We are used to it and we have the age-old anti-bodies, but the others are defenceless.

Like the redskins and smallpox, like the Maya and measles.

6 April 2010: the dignity of the people of Abruzzo

Dopo un anno da quel tragico 6 aprile del 2009, L’Aquila trema ancora.
A year after that tragic 6 Aprill 2009, L’Aquila is trembling again.

Un anno fa persero la vita, rimanendo sotto le macerie, 308 persone.
A year ago, 308 people lost their lives under the rubble.

La situazione oggi, in quei luoghi, non e’ assolutamente risolta.
Today, in those places, the situation is absolutely not resolved.

I politici che hanno governato quest’anno sono gli unici responsabili del fatto che la popolazione della città si senta ancora abbandonata, che alcune famiglie vivano ancora in albergo, oppure ospiti da parenti e amici o, peggio ancora, in ripari di fortuna.
The politicians who have governed during this year are the only ones responsible for the fact that the city’s population still feels abandoned, that some families are still living in hotels, or are guests in the homes of relatives and friends, or even worse, are in makeshift shelters.

If he is forced to look at himself in the mirror, he denies his own image and blames the others for his defects, his weaknesses.

Si inventa un mondo di cui è prigioniero, ma di cui possiede le chiavi.
He invents for himself a world in which he is a prisoner, but for which he has the keys.

Google: everyone loses out

Ieri tre manager di ‘Google’ sono stati condannati per non aver rimosso un video riguardante dei maltrattamenti inflitti ad un ragazzo affetto da sindrome di Down e pubblicato sulla piattaforma di You Tube.
Yesterday, three ‘Google’ managers were found guilty of not having removed a video relating to the mistreatment inflicted on a youngster affected with Down’s syndrome that was published on the YouTube platform.

Il 28 novembre 2009 avevo espresso loro, in occasione della richiesta di condanna da parte della Procura di Milano, la mia solidarietà (leggi l’articolo).
On 28 November, I expressed my solidarity with them on the occasion of the Milan Prosecution’s request for their conviction (read the article).

Oggi torno a farlo poiché sono stati condannati a sei mesi di reclusione con la condizionale.
Today I am returning to doing that given that they have been sentenced to 6 months in prison with the “conditional”.

La condanna penale è arrivata anche se i legali della vittima hanno ritirato la querela, mentre gli imputati sono stati assolti in ambito civile dall’accusa di diffamazione, causa intentata dal comune di Milano e dall’associazione ‘ViviDown’ che si erano costituite come parte civile.
The criminal conviction has come even though the lawyers of the victim withdrew their complaint, while the defendants have been found not guilty of the defamation accusation in the civil courts in a case brought by the city of Milan and the association ‘ViviDown’ that were the plaintiffs.

Solidarietà a Google

La Procura di Milano ha chiesto la condanna di quattro dirigenti ‘Google’ per non aver vigilato sulla pubblicazione di un filmato nel 2006, dove alcuni compagni di classe maltrattavano, riprendendo con il cellulare, un ragazzo con la Sindrome di Down.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Milan has asked that four Directors of Google be convicted of negligence for having failed to prevent the posting of a video clip, filmed on a mobile phone back in 2006 and showing four classmates bullying a youngster with Down’s Syndrome.

Per tre dei quattro manager è stata chiesta la pena di reclusione di anni uno, per il quarto di mesi sei.
The prosecution has asked that three of the four managers be sentenced to a jail term of one year and the fourth to a term of six months.

Come se non bastasse, il Comune di Milano, ritenendosi parte offesa, ha chiesto 300 mila euro alla società per danni morali e materiali.
As if this were not bad enough, the Milan Municipality, appearing as the offended party, has lodged a claim against the company for a sum of 300-thousand Euro in damages for alleged pain and suffering.
