The States had to get into debt to finance them.

Molti erano già pesantemente esposti e non hanno retto.
Many of them were already heavily exposed and couldn’t cope.

I più deboli, come sempre avviene, hanno ceduto per primi e stanno trascinando con sé, in un castello di carte, altri Stati.
The weakest, as always happens, were the first to give up and they are dragging other States with them, in a castle made of cards.

Quando finisce un’era chi vi è dentro può ritenere di essere alla fine dei tempi e rifiutare l’evento oppure guardare oltre.
When one era is ending, anyone who is within it can consider themselves to be at the end of time and deny the event or they can look beyond.

E’ evidente che il modello capitalista basato sul profitto senza limiti, sulla crescita e sul consumo del pianeta è fallito da tempo, anche se i governi non lo vogliono riconoscere.
It’s evident that the capitalistic model based on limitless profit, on growth and on the consumption of the planet has finished some time ago, even though the governments don’t want to recognise that.

La guerra del petrolio iniziata almeno con la prima invasione dell’Iraq di Bush padre e proseguita fino ad ad oggi con l’occupazione dell’Afghanistan e l’aggressione alla Libia è solo il più evidente dei sintomi della nostra autodistruzione.
The war over oil started at least before the invasion of Iraq by Bush senior and carried on up until now with the occupation of Afghanistan and the aggression against Libya is only the most evident of the symptoms of our self-destruction.

Il modello basato sulla mobilità individuale e sui trasporti mondiali delle merci, le pere cilene in Gran Bretagna o i pomodori cinesi in Italia non ha alcuna motivazione logica, né economica.
The model based on individual mobility and on the world transportation of merchandise, Chilean pears in Great Britain or Chinese tomatoes in Italy has no logical or economic motivation.

Nessuno si ferma per chiedersi: “Ha senso la crescita? E cosa significa esattamente?”.
No one stops to ask:”Does growth make sense? And what does it mean exactly?

La crescita è un nuovo tabù, un moloch moderno adorato come un tempo Giove o Apollo, con i suoi moderni sacerdoti: il FMI, il WTO, la BCE e i suoi templi:

I sacrifici. Questa è la parola d’ordine dell’estate 2011.

Tutti sono d’accordo sul fatto che, per non fallire, i sacrifici sono necessari.
Everyone agrees that, so as not to collapse, sacrifices are needed.

Nessuno dei dichiaranti però è disposto a farli.
However, none of those making this declaration is prepared to make sacrifices.

Preferisce che siano gli altri a dare il buon esempio.
They prefer it to be the others giving a good example.

I cittadini non abbienti, diciamo pure quasi indigenti, hanno già capito che il cerino rimarrà in mano a loro.
The citizens without means, let’s even say the ones who are almost destitute, have already understood that the touch paper will stay in their hands.

Sono abituati da tempo alle vessazioni di questo Stato post feudale.
For some time they are used to the torments of this post-feudal state.

Hanno le tasse più alte d’Europa, gli stipendi più bassi, tagli decennali ai servizi sociali, a iniziare dalla salute e dalla scuola, e la cancellazione di fatto della pensione.
They have the highest taxes in Europe, the lowest salaries, cuts to social services every ten years, starting with health and education and the de facto cancelation of the pension.

Lo Stato è diventato un pozzo senza fondo che non ti restituisce più neppure l’eco.
The State has become a bottomless pit that doesn’t even give you back an echo.

Sheds, supermarkets, exhibition spaces, car showrooms, second and third houses, commercial centres, tarmacked roads, phantom buildings with closed windows and “for sale” signs.

Il territorio è omologato, banalizzato e unificato in un unico incubo di cemento.
The territory is ratified, trivialized and unified into a single nightmare of cement.

Gli ultimi indios siamo noi, la foresta amazzonica è l’Italia.
We are the last Indios. The Amazonian forest is Italy.

At the suggestion of banks and financiers, Italians in recent years have invested in MIB 50 shares, shares on the list that covers the main companies quoted on the Stock Exchange, the ones considered to be the most solid, “safe-deposit box shares”.

Chi lo ha fatto ha perso spesso gran parte del capitale.
Anyone who has done that has often lost a good part of their capital.

Le azioni di Telecom, Seat, Saras o Mondadori non recupereranno mai più il valore di qualche anno fa.
The shares of Telecom, Seat, Saras or Mondadori will never recover their value of a few years ago.

La crescita drogata da risorse finanziarie inesistenti non è più possibile, né in realtà lo è mai stata, era un incantesimo al quale abbiamo voluto credere.
The doped growth from non-existent financial resources is no longer possible, neither has it ever been in reality. It was an enchantment that we wanted to believe in.

Un miraggio legato a una crescita insostenibile spacciata per sviluppo, quando invece era solo predazione, immiserimento, impoverimento della società.
A mirage connected to unsustainable growth passed off as development, when instead it was only predation, pauperisation, and impoverishment of society.

L’età della crescita, del PIL come misuratore delle nazioni appartiene al passato.
The age of growth, of the GDP as a measure of nations belongs to the past.

Forse abbiamo perso il senso della realtà.
Perhaps we have lost the sense of reality.

I media usano la tecnica della confusione e ci becchiamo come i polli di Renzo prima che gli sia tirato il collo.
The media use the “confusion technique” and we peck at each other like “Renzo’s chickens” before they have their necks wrung.

Proviamo a ridefinire le regole.
Let’s try and redefine the rules.

I sacrifici li devono fare tutti.
The sacrifices have to be made by everybody.

I sacrifici li decidono e votano i cittadini.
Sacrifices are decided by and voted on by the citizens.

Ma qualcuno sano di mente pensa realmente che con 19 milioni di pensionati e 4 milioni di dipendenti pubblici possiamo farcela?
But is there anyone of sane mind that really thinks that with 19 million pensioners and 4 million public sector employees we can do it?

Per mantenerli vengono spalati ogni anno nelle caldaie della locomotiva Italia, sempre più lenta, in affanno, con salite ormai proibitive, altri 100 miliardi di debito pubblico, come fossero carbone, che corrispondono almeno a 5 miliardi di interessi annui in più.
Every year, to keep them going, another 100 billion in public debt is shovelled into the engine of “Locomotive Italy”, as though it were coal. The locomotive is going slower and slower, making heavy weather of it, with uphill stretches that by now are even more impossible.That money corresponds to extra annual interest of at least 5 billion.

Pagati dai sempre più rari contribuenti, le aziende chiudono e ci sono 4 milioni di disoccupati.
Paid by the tax-payers who are becoming fewer and fewer. Companies are closing down and there are 4 million people unemployed.

Il tasso sul nostro debito sale e gli interessi non possono che aumentare.
The interest rate on our public debt is going up and the amount due in interest can only go up.

Nel 2011, se va bene, pagheremo 100 miliardi di interessi.
If all goes well, in 2011, we will pay 100 billion in interest.

First they came to get the precarious workers and everyone was happy.

Erano bamboccioni che volevano il posto fisso, le ferie e gli straordinari pagati senza assumersi alcun rischio imprenditoriale.
They were big babies that wanted a fixed job, holidays, paid overtime without accepting any entrepreneurial risk.

Poi vennero a prendere i lavoratori del settore privato che costavano troppo, erano fastidiosi per la Confindustria.
Then they came to get the private sector workers that cost too much, and were annoying for the Confindustria.

Le aziende si spostarono in Paesi senza diritti sindacali, dove si pensa solo a lavorare.
The companies shifted into the countries without Trade Union rights, where they just thought about working.

I lavoratori diventarono cassintegrati o disoccupati.
The workers became laid off or unemployed.

Poi vennero a prendere gli insegnanti delle scuole pubbliche a decine di migliaia, fannulloni pagati per scaldare la cattedra.
Then they came to get tens of thousands of teachers in the public sector, lazybones, paid to keep the teacher’s chair warm.

Nessuno si indignò, in fondo se l’erano cercata.
No one was outraged. Basically, they’d been asking for it.

Poi vennero a prendere tutti i dipendenti della Pubblica Amministrazione.
Then they came to get all the employees of the public authorities.

Il default quando arriva, arriva.

E poi? Cosa succederà?

Immaginiamo tre scenari:
Let’s imagine three scenarios:

“default morbido”, “quasi morbido”, “praticamente in mutande”.
“soft default”, “almost soft”, “almost in underpants”.

Il default morbido prevede un prelievo dai conti correnti (stile Amato), un aumento generalizzato delle imposte indirette, la reintroduzione dell’ICI, l’innalzamento dell’età pensionistica, il blocco di ogni turn over delle assunzioni nella pubblica amministrazione, aumento delle tasse locali, dei trasporti, dell’acqua, dell’elettricità e del gas.
The soft default sets out a “lifting from current accounts” (Amato-style),a generalised increase in indirect taxes, the reintroduction of ICI, the raising of the pension age, the block on new recruitment to the public administration, an increase in local taxes, in the costs of transport, water, electricity and gas.

Il default morbido è però improbabile con un debito pubblico maggiore di 1.900 miliardi e le banche che non valgono un soldo bucato con in pancia 220 miliardi di titoli di Stato, 85 miliardi di sofferenze e un immenso patrimonio immobiliare che prima o poi andrà svalutato.
However the soft default is improbable with the public debt over 1,900 billion and the banks that are not worth a thing, holding on to 220 billion in State bonds, 85 billion in unpaid loans and an immense real estate patrimony that sooner or later can be devalued.

Io credo che ogni popolo abbia, a un certo punto della sua Storia, il diritto alla legittima difesa.

E questo punto in Italia è stato ampiamente superato.
And this point in Italy has been amply exceeded.

I cialtroni che siedono in Parlamento, nessuno si senta escluso, in particolare dai banchi dell’opposizione, sono abusivi, illegittimi, senza alcuna autorità.
The scoundrels who sit in Parliament, let not one of them feel excluded, in particularly on the benches of the Opposition, are unauthorised, illegitimate, without any authority.

La legge elettorale, voluta da TUTTI i partiti (la dimostrazione è che il governo Prodi in due anni si guardò bene dall’abolirla) è incostituzionale.
The electoral law, wanted by ALL parties (the demonstration of this is that in the two years of the Prodi government they were careful not to abolish it) is unconstitutional.

Non permette la nomina diretta del candidato.
It does not make it possible to have the direct nomination of the candidate.

Lo capisce chiunque e allora perché la Corte Costituzionale non è intervenuta, non interviene?
Anyone can understand this and so why has the Constitutional Court not intervened, is not intervening?

Filippo Penati has to pay back the 176 million euro to the inhabitants of the Province of Milan.

Quelli che sono stati sottratti di fatto alla finanza pubblica con l’acquisto delle azioni della Milano – Serravalle da Marcello Gavio, mancato nel 2009.
The money that was in fact taken from public financing with the purchase of the shares for the Milano – Serravalle stretch of motorway from Marcello Gavio who died in 2009.

Il valore attribuito alle azioni da Penati, da vero amico del giaguaro (“non siamo mica qui a smacchiare la pelle del giaguaro” direbbe Bersani) fu di 8,93 euro per un totale di 238 milioni.
The value attributed to the shares by Penati, by the true friend of the jaguar (“don’t think that we are here to take the spots off the jaguar” is what Bersani would say) was 8.93 euro for a total of 238 million.

Gavio le aveva acquistate per 2,9 euro qualche mese prima.
Gavio had bought the shares for 2.9 euro a few months earlier.

Non si è mai vista una autostrada triplicare il suo valore in così breve tempo.
No one has ever seen a motorway tripling its value in such a short time.

Motivi per comprare le azioni non esistevano.

Il mondo rovesciato
The world the other way round

Nei tarocchi la carta dell’Appeso raffigura un uomo legato per la caviglia destra a una trave. Le mani incrociate dietro la schiena.
On the Tarot card of The Hanged Man, there’s a man with his right ankle tied to a beam. His hands are crossed behind his back.

Nonostante il supplizio il suo viso è sereno, quasi estatico. Talvolta è circondato da un’aureola.
In spite of the torment, his face is serene, almost ecstatic. Sometimes he’s surrounded by a halo.

Italo Calvino nel libro “Il Castello dei destini incrociati” fa dire a Orlando, il paladino impazzito, mentre si trova a testa in giù:

Yogurt greco fatto in casa
Homemade Greek yogurt

I politici greci sono fortunati.
Greek politicians are lucky.

Quando si fanno vedere in giro (il meno possibile…) gli tirano lo yogurt.
When they are seen out and about, (as little as possible) people throw yogurt at them.

E quello greco è tra i migliori del mondo…
It’s the Greek type, among the best in the world …

I nostri invece li arrestano.
Whereas our politicians get arrested.

Rimpiangono con nostalgia le monetine di Craxi.
They weep with nostalgia for the coins thrown at Craxi.

Se gli tirassero pezzi da 10 centesimi sarebbero contenti.
If people were to throw 10 cent coins at them they would be happy.

Si muovono con la scorta, nelle auto blu con i vetri oscurati, come squali nel traffico, per non farsi riconoscere dalla gente.
They move around with bodyguards, in dark blue cars with blackened windows, like sharks in the traffic, so as not to be recognised by people.

La temono.
They are afraid of them.

Il vuoto
The void

La natura rifugge il vuoto, l’Italia ne è attratta.
Nature is averse to the void. Italy is attracted to it.

Politica, economia, società sono vuoti che ci ostiniamo a riempire con il nulla.
Politics, the economy, society are voids that we insist on filling with nothingness.

La nostra soluzione al vuoto che ci assedia, che divora gli spazi quotidiani, è sempre un altro vuoto.
